Philanthropic Leadership : Comparing Historical And Contemporary Methods Of Philanthropic Giving, Patrick Rucker Jan 1996

Philanthropic Leadership : Comparing Historical And Contemporary Methods Of Philanthropic Giving, Patrick Rucker

Honors Theses

America has a unique tradition of philanthropy. Wealthy benefactors have created some of our most notable institutions for health, education and the arts. The level of philanthropic giving has been consistently high yet the tradition of giving has taken many shapes and assumes several forms today. One of the most interesting and currently debated forms of charitable giving is money directed towards social change or the achievement of a certain social agenda. Money is given today to support or stall legal abortions, racial integration, and a host of other social issues. This paper will examine the tradition of giving in …

Visual Learning In The Perception Of Texture: Simple And Contingent Aftereffects Of Texture Density, Frank H. Durgin, D. R. Proffitt Jan 1996

Visual Learning In The Perception Of Texture: Simple And Contingent Aftereffects Of Texture Density, Frank H. Durgin, D. R. Proffitt

Psychology Faculty Works

Novel results elucidating the magnitude, binocularity and retinotopicity of aftereffects of visual texture density adaptation are reported as is a new contingent aftereffect of texture density which suggests that the perception of visual texture density is quite malleable. Texture aftereffects contingent upon orientation, color and temporal sequence are discussed. A fourth effect is demonstrated in which auditory contingencies are shown to produce a different kind of visual distortion. The merits and limitations of error-correction and classical conditioning theories of contingent adaptation are reviewed. It is argued that a third kind of theory which emphasizes coding efficiency and informational considerations merits …

African-American babies are an endangered species. They have the potential to live to the ripe old age of fourteen. We are singing new songs of overcoming-overcoming the loss of our babies. However, it's the same song: the lyrics are Black, and the music is, as always, White. Across the nation let us hold hands, let us gather together, let us save our babies. Will the music, the lyrics of our collective songs, save our babies? Is there a collective voice? There must be a collective voice if we are to save our babies and WE must save them if we …

A Center-Unstable Manifold Theorem For Parametrically Excited Surface Waves, Larry Turyn Jan 1996

A Center-Unstable Manifold Theorem For Parametrically Excited Surface Waves, Larry Turyn

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

When fluid in a rectangular tank sits upon a platform which is oscillating with sufficient amplitude, surface waves appear in the ''Faraday resonance.'' Scientists and engineers have done bifurcation analyses which assume that there is a center manifold theory using a finite number of excited spatial modes. We establish such a center manifold theorem for Xiao-Biao Lin's model in which potential flow is assumed but an artificial dissipation term is included in the system of partial differential equations on the free surface. We use interpolation spaces developed by da Prate and Grisvard, establish maximal regularity for a family of evolution …

The Application Of Student Development Theory To Developmental Advising Practices, Tracey Roling Jan 1996

The Application Of Student Development Theory To Developmental Advising Practices, Tracey Roling

Graduate Research Papers

Research on academic advising in higher education has consistently shown that students value the advising relationship as a crucial component to their success. The delivery systems of advising vary from faculty advising to full-time professional advisors. Whatever the delivery system, students have expressed the desire for an individualized advising relationship (Gordon, 1992). The concept of developmental advising grew out of the desire for personal attention in the 1970s and 1980s. Crookston (1972), for example, described the developmental relationship not only as advising but as teaching. That is, it is a relationship based on negotiated agreements on who takes initiative and …

Consumer Decision Making Styles: A Multi-Country Investigation, Steven Lysonski, Srinivas Durvasula, Yorgos Zotos

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

Argues that profiling consumer decision-making styles has importance to marketers, advertisers and consumer affairs specialists, but developing an approach to quantify such profiles has been problematic. Reports the application of an instrument known as the consumer style inventory (CSI) to measure these profiles for samples of consumers from Greece, India, New Zealand and the USA. Indicates, from the results, that the instrument seems more applicable to higher income countries than to developing ones. Discusses implications regarding use of the instrument and cross-cultural issues.

The Troubled Relationship Of Will Contracts And Spousal Protection: Time For An Amicable Separation, Carolyn L. Dessin Jan 1996

The Troubled Relationship Of Will Contracts And Spousal Protection: Time For An Amicable Separation, Carolyn L. Dessin

Akron Law Faculty Publications

We live in a society with rapidly changing familial norms. Statistics show that one out of every two marriages ends in divorce, and even higher divorce rates are projected. The number of people who remarry following a divorce also is increasing.

Much has been written about the effect of the changing family patterns on estate planning. In the era when having only one spouse and one set of children was the norm, it was fairly simple to develop a rational system for dividing the person's estate among spouse and children. In recent decades, however, the growing number of multiple marriages …
