The Modern Day Gikuyun Farmer, Ramya Bavikatte '95
The Modern Day Gikuyun Farmer, Ramya Bavikatte '95
Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research
The purpose of this research project is to study the economic and social implications of smallholder agriculture in Kenya. The shift of smallholders from subsistence farming to cash crop farming created significant changes in the standards of living, social security, reproduction, and the sexual division of labor. With the strong social impact of commercial farming, many Kenyans are wondering whether they are materially better or worse off than they were thirty five years ago.
The Effects Of Political And Demographic Variables On Christian Coalition Scores, Tricia Dailey '96
The Effects Of Political And Demographic Variables On Christian Coalition Scores, Tricia Dailey '96
Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research
One of the most interesting phenomena in American politics is the recent rise of the Christian right. First termed the "Moral Majority" by Jerry Falwell in the late 1970s, the Christian Right has undergone a name and a leader change. The Christian Coalition is currently led by Pat Robertson who seeks to continue much of the early work pioneered by the Moral Majority. The Moral Majority sought to reintroduce Christian principles into the political sphere. The Christian Coalition focuses on continuing these efforts in an attempt to reverse "the moral decay that threatens our great nation" (Christian Coalition, 1996).
A House Divided: Party Polarization On Social Welfare Issues, Amy Stewart '96
A House Divided: Party Polarization On Social Welfare Issues, Amy Stewart '96
Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research
Recently, the general public and the media have paid much attention to an increasing polarization on welfare issues. As Everett Carll Ladd's (1995) survey illustrates in Figure 1, three quarters of the general population agreed on the role of government in welfare in 1988. However, this consensus had disintegrated into a near polar split by 1994. Because the U.S. House of Representatives is supposedly most responsive to popular opinion, the research here uses the House to investigate possible determinants of this trend. I postulate that not only divided government and the decline of the conservative coalition, but also the "Contract …
The Contradictions Of Change: The Relative Status Of Women In The Work Force After The, Alicia Smith '96
The Contradictions Of Change: The Relative Status Of Women In The Work Force After The, Alicia Smith '96
Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research
The fall of communism in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union marked the end of an era in which official ideology and state policy often masked the reality of citizens' lives. This contradiction was particularly acute for women, a group that the Soviet model of communism was intended to emancipate (Basu, 1995; Bystydzienski, 1992; Corrin, 1992; Einhorn, 1993; Millarand and Wolchik, 1994; Nelson and Chowdhury, 1994; Rueshchemeyer, 1994). Under the guise of Marxist-Leninist ideology, women were accorded an equal right to work and to participate in the building of socialism. The Soviet model, which was imposed to a greater …
The Personal And Political Implications Of Machiavelli's The Prince, Laura Mcroberts '96
The Personal And Political Implications Of Machiavelli's The Prince, Laura Mcroberts '96
Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research
Machiavelli is praised for the political implications of his writing in The Prince. However, many do not see the personal implications of Machiavelli's work, because the motivations for action are spoken in terms of political domination and the acquisition of power. There are underlying principles that speak of domination not only of cities and nations, but the domination of the opportunities placed before each individual. The Prince can be read in a different manner; as a manual for daily life and the maximization of opportunity.

Determinants Of Success In Reform Strategies: A Case Study Of Hungary And Poland, Laurel Martin '96
Determinants Of Success In Reform Strategies: A Case Study Of Hungary And Poland, Laurel Martin '96
Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research
The capacity of a post-communist country to minimize social pain is essential to the very existence of the new government. In studying the transitional economies of Eastern Europe, it is important to attempt to determine what factors have lead to a level of success in not only moving towards a market economy, but also in minimizing the social pain of that transition. Hungary and Poland have been cited as two of the most successful nations in moving towards economic success (Slay, 1994). Interestingly, these two countries selected different reform strategies, the gradualist approach and the shock therapy approach respectively. With …
The Economic And Political Factors Affecting The U.S. Sugar Subsidy Program, Anne Peterson '96
The Economic And Political Factors Affecting The U.S. Sugar Subsidy Program, Anne Peterson '96
Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research
Sugar growers continue to benefit from favorable economic conditions provided by the U.S. government. Yet empirical data reveal a decrease in the aggregate support for sugar legislation in recent years. In 1978, there were 9,187 full or part owners of sugar cane and sugar beet farms, compared to 7,799 farms in 1987. The level of sugar subsidy allocated to the farmers, however, has increased and even favored certain sugar growers disproportionately over others. Such empirical findings suggests that politics, as much as economics, affect the level of sugar subsidy. This paper examines why an increasingly smaller number of sugar farmers …
The Stock Market As A Leading Indicator: An Application Of Granger Causality, Brad Comincioli
The Stock Market As A Leading Indicator: An Application Of Granger Causality, Brad Comincioli
University Avenue Undergraduate Journal of Economics
The purpose of this paper, then, is to evaluate stock prices as a leading indicator of economic activity. Time-series analysis and the notion of "Granger causality" are used in this project to estimate relationships between stock prices and the economy, and to see if they are consistent with theory. In this paper, we will explore the following questions. First, does the stock market lead the real economy, in the sense that variation in its past values explains some of the variation in the real economy? Second, does the stock market "Granger-cause" the real economy, in which case past values of …
An Economic Analysis Of The Death Penalty, Martin Kasten
An Economic Analysis Of The Death Penalty, Martin Kasten
University Avenue Undergraduate Journal of Economics
From an economic perspective, society should only use capital punishment if the marginal benefits outweigh the marginal costs. In the course of analyzing the economic efficiency of capital punishment, and before providing any recommendations, both the benefits and costs of the death penalty must be evaluated. Since the death penalty has been implemented for centuries, many people believe its benefits outweigh its costs. The evaluation of benefits in Part II will be compared to the costs assessed in Part III to determine if this long held assertion is correct.
Cultural Wage Differentials Among United States Immigrants, Bill Takahashi
Cultural Wage Differentials Among United States Immigrants, Bill Takahashi
University Avenue Undergraduate Journal of Economics
This project will attempt to take a modern snapshot of the ongoing process of immigration and cultural diversification, examine the problem of immigrant adaptation into the American way of life and explore which groups, if any, have an advantage when it comes to integrating into American society. More specifically this paper will address the question: What is the role of cultural factors in determining the standard of living of immigrants.

Environmental Injustice: Evidence And Economic Implications, Heidi Y. Willers
Environmental Injustice: Evidence And Economic Implications, Heidi Y. Willers
University Avenue Undergraduate Journal of Economics
Some economic analyses find evidence of environmental injustice--minorities and/or low-income persons are exposed to environmental dangers (locally undesirable land uses, or LULUs) more than their non-minority or more affluent counterparts. Such inefficient allocations result from a violation of perfect property rights. This paper does not determine efficient levels of various environmental dangers, but rather examines and compares several studies in an effort to find a consensus among researchers. No consensus emerges, as differences in research techniques prevent consistent results from being found. Future research must have well-defined methodologies before it can be effectively used by policy makers.

Nebraska Tractor Tests
EXPLANATION OF THE TEST PROCEDURE
General
Tractors are tested at the University of Nebraska according to the Agricultural Tractor Test Code approved by the American Society of Agricultural Engineers and the Society of Automotive Engineers or official Nebraska test procedure.
The manufacturer selects the tractor to be tested and certifies that it is a stock model. Each tractor is equipped with the common power consuming accessories such as power steering, power lift pump, generator, etc., if available. Power consuming accessories may be disconnected only when the means for disconnecting can be reached from the operating station. An official representative of …
Two 'Cop-Outs' In Faith-Learning Integration: Incarnational Integration And Worldviewish Integration, Ken Badley
Two 'Cop-Outs' In Faith-Learning Integration: Incarnational Integration And Worldviewish Integration, Ken Badley
Faculty Publications - College of Education
There are at least six different approaches to integration adopted by educationalists in recent years. These interconnect and may partially overlap. Two kinds of confusion in talk of integration are identified, along with four other substantive questions that would-be faith-learning, integrationists need to address. Neither incarnational integration nor perspectival integration are adequate on their own. Evangelical and Reformed traditions are both at their best when they combine incarnational and perspectival in their efforts to integrate faith and learning.
The Degree Of Copositive Approximation And A Computer Algorithm, Yingkang Hu, Xiang Ming Yu
The Degree Of Copositive Approximation And A Computer Algorithm, Yingkang Hu, Xiang Ming Yu
College of Natural and Applied Sciences
The main results are as follows. (1) Let f ∈ C[0, 1] change its sign a finite number of times; then the degree of copositive approximation of f by splines with n equally spaced knots is bounded by C ω3(f, 1/n) for n large enough. This rate is the best in the sense that ω3 cannot be replaced by ω4. (2) An algorithm is developed based on the proof. (3) The first result above holds for a copositive polynomial approximation of f. (4) If f ∈ C1[0, 1], then the degree of approximation by copositive splines of order r is …

Utah Rule Of Evidence 403 And Gruesome Photographs: Is A Picture Worth Anything In Utah?, Amy S. Thomas
Utah Rule Of Evidence 403 And Gruesome Photographs: Is A Picture Worth Anything In Utah?, Amy S. Thomas
Utah Law Review
In a line of cases, the Utah Supreme Court created a presumption of inadmissibility for gruesome photographs under Rule 403. This presumption is inconsistent with the plain language of Rule 403 and undermines the basic purposes of evidentiary rules: accurate fact-finding and promotion of fairness. The inadmissibility presumption hinders accurate fact-finding by too stringently excluding relevant evidence. The presumption also impedes the promotion of fairness by limiting a prosecutor's ability to introduce photographic evidence in egregious cases. Finally, the court's interpretation makes a biased rule out of a facially neutral rule. To correct these consequences, the Utah Supreme Court should …
