Writing Portfolios Across The Curriculum In A Fifth Grade Classroom, Barbara L. Schultz Jan 1996

Writing Portfolios Across The Curriculum In A Fifth Grade Classroom, Barbara L. Schultz

Graduate Research Papers

Writing portfolios in a fifth grade classroom were used to relate instruction and assessment more closely. A goal of the classroom instructional program was to extend writing experiences across the curriculum. Three students' portfolios were examined to show this instructional emphasis. Descriptions of the children's writing experiences and their portfolio entry responses are presented. This portfolio development experience indicates that the students used writing to learn in a more broad sense. They became more aware of the functions of the composition process. The students progressed from the idea that writing was stories and poems to the idea that writing is …

Parents Nurturing Literacy Through Literature Experiences, Leslie K. Titler Jan 1996

Parents Nurturing Literacy Through Literature Experiences, Leslie K. Titler

Graduate Research Papers

Parents as their children's first teachers play a significant role in nurturing their literacy. Children who come from home environments in which they have frequent and varied experiences with print material and observe adults interacting with print material for their own purpose usually achieve literacy with ease. Parents who present literature experiences through read aloud sessions to their young children not only extend their conceptual development, sense of story, and knowledge of print, but model an appreciation of language. Picture books, specifically nursery rhymes, alphabet books, predictable texts, books with little or no text, and concept books, can nurture children's …

Teaching And Learning At A Distance Via Interactive Television, Ai Wang Jan 1996

Teaching And Learning At A Distance Via Interactive Television, Ai Wang

Graduate Research Papers

Recent, advances in telecommunications technology have greatly expanded the possibilities for providing and accessing instruction. For example, satellite, and digital technologies facilitate electronic text transfer to move information quickly over long distances. Telecommunication technology systems can be linked together to form networks capable of simultaneously carrying voice, data, and video transmissions. Distance Education has become a growth industry in higher education (Wolcott, 1995). Currently technology developments are bringing about many changes in the way institutions are providing educational opportunities for students (Carter, 1996). No longer is the college campus the only location where students may go to get an education …

Writing Portfolios In A Third Grade Classroom, Ann L. Wickenkamp

Graduate Research Papers

Much attention is being given to authentic assessment of the writing process. This assessment which describes students' progress and instructional needs and seeks to connect instruction and assessment is qualitative and involves students in the evaluation of their achievements. This type of assessment reflects the move away from the mechanics of writing toward an emphasis on children creating meaning through the writing process. This article provides background information on writing portfolios. It shares a teacher's experience in implementing writing portfolios into a third grade program that integrates writing across the curriculum.

Graduate Research Papers

This study investigated how integrated library automation systems can assist in quantitative collection analysis in a small school library setting. The methodology used was a statistical descriptive study as it was most suited to the study of a specific collection analysis process. The study revealed that the Winnebago Circ/Cat version program can aid in the collection of raw data for analysis. The study further revealed the data manipulation abilities of the Winnebago program are limited. An automated spreadsheet program is necessary to manipulate the data and illustrate that data in graphic form.

It fmther showed that the developmental tasks attempted or accomplished by the main characters …

On Transitive And Fully Transitive Abelian P-Groups, D. Carroll, Brendan Goldsmith Jan 1996

On Transitive And Fully Transitive Abelian P-Groups, D. Carroll, Brendan Goldsmith

Articles

It is a long standing problem of A.L.S. Corner as to whether there exists a non-transitive fully transitive Abelian p-group with finite Ulm subgroups. The principal result of this paper shows that no such group exists for a special class of p-groups if the Ulm subjgroup is the direct sum of two cyclic groups. Some results on summands of trnsitive and fully transitive groups are obtained.

The Contract With America As Reported In Time And Newsweek : A Cluster-Agon Analysis, Cheryl J. Wilson-Ward Jan 1996

The Contract With America As Reported In Time And Newsweek : A Cluster-Agon Analysis, Cheryl J. Wilson-Ward

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The 1992 presidential election was labeled "The Election of Discontent" by the November 1992 edition of The World and I. Voter participation decreased steadily during the 1980s and the cynicism about politicians was labeled as the primary reason. In an November 7, 1994, Newsweek Poll, sixty-eight percent of Americans polled said they were dissatisfied with the way things were going in their country and more than seventy percent blamed politicians for those problems. Americans seemed not to be interested in casting their vote based on issues but on a growing angry sentiment toward incumbents.

The Portrayal Of Abandonment By Mothers In Young Adult Literature, Bernie M. Hawley Jan 1996

The Portrayal Of Abandonment By Mothers In Young Adult Literature, Bernie M. Hawley

Graduate Research Papers

This study used content analysis of a selected sample of 33 young adult fiction books published between 1980-1995, to determine if the portrayal of abandonment of children by their mothers is realistic according to social research of those populations. Findings indicate that in a majority of the titles the abandonment is caused by the mother's need to establish her own identity and the abandoned child(ren)'s reactions are characterized by negative behaviors. These findings support the premise that contemporary young adult fiction presents mother abandonment in a realistic manner. It was found, however, that the majority of mothers in these books …

Enforcing Professional Norms For Federal Litigation Conduct: Achieving Reciprocal Cooperation, Jeffrey A. Parness

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

The article utilizes the disciplinary case, In re Cook, 49 F. 3d 263 (7th Cir. 1995), to reflect on available norm-enforcement schemes when state-licensed attorneys engage in civil litigation misconduct in the federal courts. The federal Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals in Cook was disappointed in the state disciplinary process because it failed to promote reciprocal cooperation between federal and state courts when such misconduct is reported to state disciplinary officials. The article explores how there can be better coordination between federal courts and state disciplinarians, as well as enhanced coordination between federal district and appeals courts, when state-licensed attorneys …

Ls There Any Risk Of A Withdrawal Syndrome Associated With Abrupt Discontinuation Of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors?, Rene A. Endow, Mary Gutierrez, Michael Z. Wincor

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

"With the availability of the newer selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRis), concern over a 'cholinergie rebound' seemed unnecessary since these agents demonstrate little or no anticholinergic activity. However, a review of the literature indicates that there may be other withdrawal symptoms associated with discontinuation of the SSRis. The time course and, perhaps to a lesser extent, the frequency of these symptoms appear to be correlated with the elimination half-lives of the agents."

Seedlings of Taxodium distichum L., Quercus lyrata Walt. and Q. falcata var. pagodaefolia Ell. were grown for 22 days in a rhizotron system providing two soil redox potential regimes, +170 mV (low Eh) and +560 mV (high Eh). Leaf chlorophyll concentration and gas exchange, root alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) activity, root and leaf ethylene production, and growth and biomass partitioning were measured. In response to the low Eh soil treatment, stomatal conductance was reduced in Q. falcata and Q. lyrata but not in T. distichum, whereas net photosynthesis was reduced significantly in all species; however, net photosynthesis in T. distichum began …

Lawyering In Canada In The 21st Century, Harry W. Arthurs Jan 1996

Lawyering In Canada In The 21st Century, Harry W. Arthurs

Articles & Book Chapters

Legal practise is shaped by its social, political and economic environment. Canada's "new economy" of decreasing state regulation, globalization, computerization and changes in information technology, and the shift from manufacturing to the service sector has grave - largely negative - implications for the future of law and lawyers. Moreover, the profession is fragmented and stratified. It comprises multiple constituencies - solo practitioners, large corporate firms and specialists - with differing demographies and professional roles, which are implicated in varying degrees in the "new economy". As a result, they experience the restructuring of professional knowledge, governance, ethics and culture in ways …

Forging Responsible Unions: Metal Workers And The Rise Of The Labour Injunction In Canada, Eric Tucker, Judy Fudge Jan 1996

Forging Responsible Unions: Metal Workers And The Rise Of The Labour Injunction In Canada, Eric Tucker, Judy Fudge

Articles & Book Chapters

At the turn of the century, the legislative, administrative, and judicial branches of the Canadian state responded to the labour conflicts associated with the second industrial revolution by simultaneously expanding both their coercive and their facilitative roles. This paper examines one aspect of this development, the rise of the labour injunction, through a study of a series of strikes conducted chiefly by metal workers in south central Ontario between 1900 and 1914. In addition to retrieving the largely forgotten genealogy of a body of law that continues to play an important role in regulating and containing trade union activity, the …

Modeling The Vertical Distribution Of Oyster Larvae In Response To Environmental Conditions, Margaret M. Dekshenieks, Eileen E. Hofmann, John M. Klinck, Eric N. Powell Jan 1996

Modeling The Vertical Distribution Of Oyster Larvae In Response To Environmental Conditions, Margaret M. Dekshenieks, Eileen E. Hofmann, John M. Klinck, Eric N. Powell

CCPO Publications

A size-structured, time and vertically-dependent model was used to investigate the effects of water column structure on the distribution of larvae of the oyster Crassostrea virginica. Formulations used to model larval growth and behavior are based upon laboratory studies. Simulated vertical larval distributions obtained for conditions representative of a well-mixed, partially stratified and strongly stratified water column illustrate the effect that salinity and temperature gradients have on moderating larval swimming and hence on larvae vertical location. For well-mixed conditions, smaller larvae are dispersed throughout most of the water column. For strongly stratified conditions, the smaller-sized larvae cluster within the …

Circulation Near Submarine Canyons: A Modeling Study, John M. Klinck Jan 1996

Circulation Near Submarine Canyons: A Modeling Study, John M. Klinck

CCPO Publications

Circulation near a submarine canyon is analyzed with a numerical model. Previous theoretical work indicated that stratification controlled the interaction of coastal flow with canyons, specifically, the ratio of canyon width to the internal radius of deformation. A wide canyon was thought to merely steer the flow, while a narrow canyon would create substantial cross-shelf exchange. Four cases are analyzed considering two directions of alongshore flow and two choices of initial stratification. The weakly stratified case has an internal radius about equal to the canyon width, while the strongly stratified case has one about 3 times the canyon width. The …
