Trace Metal Accumulation In Houston And Galveston Area Aquatic Biota As A F Actor Of Their Environment., Fraline Judith Castillo, B. S Jan 1996

Trace Metal Accumulation In Houston And Galveston Area Aquatic Biota As A F Actor Of Their Environment., Fraline Judith Castillo, B. S

Theses (Pre-2016)

Trace metal concentration in natural waters depends on the location of the water site. Studies have shown that water sites that are closer to industrial waste dumping sites, agricultural farms, heavily populated areas and construction sites have a higher concentration of trace metals (1, 2). Aquatic organisms in these areas will also have a higher concentration of these metals (1, 2). The Concentration of lead, zinc and cadmium in water from sites in the urban areas will be lower than that in waters from rural areas (1,2). The purpose of this study is to determine the concentrations oftrace metals in …

Gestalt Shifts In Moral Perception, Peggy Desautels Jan 1996

Gestalt Shifts In Moral Perception, Peggy Desautels

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Moral philosophers often assume that there are clear and unambiguous single descriptions of particular moral situations, and thus they view their primary task as that of determining the most moral action to take when in these situations. But surely there is less chance of there being a single and final way to describe a given moral situation than there is of there being a single and final way to organize and describe a visual display. Although we perceive many of our day-to-day moral experiences in an unreflective and even reflexive manner, it is also possible for us to (and we …

The Differential Impact Of A Basic Public Speaking Course On Perceived Communication Competencies In Class, Work, And Social Contexts, Michael W. Kramer, J. S. Hinton Jan 1996

The Differential Impact Of A Basic Public Speaking Course On Perceived Communication Competencies In Class, Work, And Social Contexts, Michael W. Kramer, J. S. Hinton

Basic Communication Course Annual

Communication departments generally choose between a public speaking and a hybrid course of their basic course. Previous research has shown that students' perceptions of their communication competencies increase after completing a hybrid course (Ford & Wolvin, 1992, 1993). After noting similarities between public speaking and hybrid courses, this study examines students' perceptions of their competencies after completing a public a speaking course.

Results indicated that students' perceptions of their competencies changed significantly in class, work, and social contacts in such areas as public speaking, interpersonal and group communication, interviewing, listening, and self-confidence. The largest gains were in perceptions of their …

The Farmers' Holiday Association In Eastern Iowa, 1932-1933, Joel Dinger Jan 1996

The Farmers' Holiday Association In Eastern Iowa, 1932-1933, Joel Dinger

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

The Farmer's Holiday Association (FHA) was a short-lived phenomenon in Depression-era history. It arose out of the National Farmers Union, the most powerful farm organization of the immediate post-World War I era. While the main goal of the FHA was noble, cost of production guarantees were probably unattainable. Additionally, the method used try and attain this goal was questionable. Furthermore, the movement took on a life 1 of its own. For the most part, most of the activities took place in western Iowa and eastern Nebraska, with significantly less activity taking place in eastern Iowa.

In this paper, the background …

Use Of Noncognitive Variables To Predict Academic Success And Retention Among A Group Of White Academically Disadvantaged College Students, Pamela Krake Fletcher Jan 1996

Use Of Noncognitive Variables To Predict Academic Success And Retention Among A Group Of White Academically Disadvantaged College Students, Pamela Krake Fletcher

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

At many American colleges and universities, efforts to enhance the retention of a diverse group of students have become a priority. This study represents part of this effort at the University of Central Florida, a large public suburban state university in the South. Specifically, this investigation evaluated Pegasus '95 and the Academic Mentoring Program offered in the Summer and Fall Semesters of 1995 to specially-admitted students who fell short of regular admissions requirements. During the summer, Pegasus '95 provided testing, orientation, guided course work, study skills workshops, and mentoring, both individually and in the context of cohesive socialization groups of …

We Can't Be The Women We Were Before: Mary Livermore And Chicago Women In The American Civil War, Nancy Arlene Driscol Engle Jan 1996

We Can't Be The Women We Were Before: Mary Livermore And Chicago Women In The American Civil War, Nancy Arlene Driscol Engle

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the impact of the American Civil War on Union women by focusing on Mary Ashton Rice Livermore and her associates in wartime aid societies in Chicago, Illinois. It argues that Livermore's postwar lecture career epitomizes the new confidence that many benevolent women possessed after the Civil War. From contemporary newspaper accounts and letters it demonstrates that the conflagration broadened the scope of their activity, allowing many to hone their skills and expand their influence while remaining safely inside society's accepted gender standards. concluding that the war changed moderate white middle-class women's lives, it then illustrates that some …

Therapeutic Implications Of Therapists' Values For The Female Victim Of Domestic Violence, Patricia A. Warford Jan 1996

Therapeutic Implications Of Therapists' Values For The Female Victim Of Domestic Violence, Patricia A. Warford

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Domestic violence effects 1.8 million women a year in the United States. Despite the magnitude of the problem, the issue is largely unaddressed by the mental health community. Therapists' values, which significantly impact the therapeutic interaction, have not been scrutinized as to their impact on female victims of domestic abuse. Furthermore, four widely accepted therapeutic orientations (psychodynamic, behavioral, humanistic, and family systems) have historically promoted values which fail to provide a framework for understanding healthy female development, the experiences of women in general, and the experience of women who have endured domestic violence in particular.

Feminist developmental theory (particularly the …

Effects Of Loneliness, Years Of Service, And Spiritual Well-Being Upon Burn-Out Among Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod Clergy, David L. Prout Jan 1996

Effects Of Loneliness, Years Of Service, And Spiritual Well-Being Upon Burn-Out Among Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod Clergy, David L. Prout

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Past research had concluded that a combination of individual and situational factors interact as causes for burn-out in ministers. This present study sought to measure three factors, loneliness, years of service, and spiritual well-being for their singular and combined impact upon burn-out among Christian pastors. Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod pastors, 276 in number, were surveyed to determine their level of burn-out, together with measure of the afore-mentioned variables. It was expected that fewer years of service, lower spiritual well-being, and higher loneliness would effect increased levels of measured burn-out in the pastors surveyed. A three-way analysis of variance indicated that burn-out …

Finding Paths In The Rotation Graph Of Binary Trees, Rodney O. Rogers Jan 1996

Finding Paths In The Rotation Graph Of Binary Trees, Rodney O. Rogers

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A binary tree coding scheme is a bijection mapping a set of binary trees to a set of integer tuples called codewords. One problem considered in the literature is that of listing the codewords for n-node binary trees, such that successive codewords represent trees differing by a single rotation, a standard operation for rebalancing binary search trees. Then, the codeword sequence corresponds to an Hamiltonian path in the rotation graph Rn of binary trees, where each node is labelled with an n-node binary tree, and an edge connects two nodes when their trees differ by a …

How Realistic Can A Catholic Writer Be? Richard Sullivan And American Catholic Literature, Una M. Cadegan Jan 1996

How Realistic Can A Catholic Writer Be? Richard Sullivan And American Catholic Literature, Una M. Cadegan

History Faculty Publications

Despite the fact that Sullivan never achieved the fame he sought, the record he left behind reveals much about the way one writer handled the complicated personal and professional questions of regional, literary, gender, and religious identity. He was a regional author with national ambitions, a serious author who did not disdain the notion of popular success, and a male author whose primary focus was domestic life and relationships. He was also a Catholic author-that is, he belonged to a tradition that believed in normative standards for artistic value in an era when such a belief was considered by some …

The Nineteenth And Early Twentieth Century Sugar Industry In The Lafourche Country, John Alfred Heitmann Jan 1996

The Nineteenth And Early Twentieth Century Sugar Industry In The Lafourche Country, John Alfred Heitmann

History Faculty Publications

The Lafourche Country's narrow highways, characteristic swamplands, and ever present tidal pools convey to the unfamiliar visitor the feeling of being in a strange and rather mysterious land far removed from modern technology and culture. Yet, this land's navigable waterways, favorable climate, and rich soil has long favored a productive sugar cane industry that has been neglected by scholars. A careful examination of the past reveals that the Lafourche Country sugar industry ranked as an equal in terms of innovation and productivity to that of the well-studied plantations along the Mississippi River and Bayou Teche. Indeed, both in the past …

Independent Christian Colleges And Universities, William Vance Trollinger Jan 1996

Independent Christian Colleges And Universities, William Vance Trollinger

History Faculty Publications

The category independent Christian colleges and universities is not a very large one. The reason for this is rather simple: as William Ringenberg has noted in the introduction to his helpful 1988 bibliography on such schools, "there are not many contemporary colleges and universities that are both continuing Christian in philosophical orientation and independent of denominational ties in governance." While this may change in the future, given the weakening of denominational loyalties among American Protestants, the fact remains that there are not too many independent Christian colleges.

For purposes of this essay I will I be looking at fourteen institutions. …

A Vision For School Business Management: A Reflective Essay, Jon E. Miller Jan 1996

A Vision For School Business Management: A Reflective Essay, Jon E. Miller

Graduate Research Papers

I started work as Board Secretary for the Mar-Mac Community School District on August 8, 1978. This happened to be the same school district I graduated from eight years earlier. The size of the district, enrollment about 300, did not warrant a professional business manager. That was a fortunate thing for me, as my undergraduate major was in psychology, not in a business related field. Throughout my career, I have always considered this lack of a business background to be a personal weakness. On the other hand, the psychology background has proven to be a personal strength due to the …

Strategies to develop constructive working relationships with the DNP are presented.

Ion Viscosity Mediated By Tangled Magnetic Fields: An Application To Black Hole Accretion Disks, P. Subramanian, P. A. Becker, Menas Kafatos Jan 1996

Ion Viscosity Mediated By Tangled Magnetic Fields: An Application To Black Hole Accretion Disks, P. Subramanian, P. A. Becker, Menas Kafatos

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We examine the viscosity associated with the shear stress exerted by ions in the presence of a tangled magnetic field. As an application, we consider the effect of this mechanism on the structure of black hole accretion disks. We do not attempt to include a self-consistent description of the magnetic field. Instead, we assume the existence of a tangled field with coherence length λcob• which is the average distance between the magnetic "kinks" that scatter the particles. For simplicity, we assume that the field is self-similar, and take λcob to be a fixed fraction ξ of the local disk height …

Effective Scheduling Of Road And Bridge Closures: Phase 2, Kumares C. Sinha, Mithilesh K. Jha Jan 1996

Effective Scheduling Of Road And Bridge Closures: Phase 2, Kumares C. Sinha, Mithilesh K. Jha

JTRP Technical Reports

This research provides a study on work zone impact analysis. In case of multiple road closures, the network approach is used to find an effective scheduling such that the total user delay is reduced. A dynamic model for analyzing the work zone impact during the period when network is in transition state is also developed. A salient feature of the dynamic model is drives’ perception updating model, which incorporates availability and the quality of information as perceived by drivers.

Wildflowers For Indiana Highways, Michael N. Dana, Ricky Darrell Kemery, Brian S. Boszor Jan 1996

Wildflowers For Indiana Highways, Michael N. Dana, Ricky Darrell Kemery, Brian S. Boszor

JTRP Technical Reports

Questions concerning wildflower usage on Indiana highway rights-of-way were investigated. Native prairie wildflower seed quality was found to be highly variable among supply companies, species, and years. Less variability was found among “garden” wildflower species and suppliers. Direct seeding was found to be successful with six species of native prairie forbs: Butterfly Milkweed Asclepiads tuberose, Wild Bergamot Monarda fistulosa, New England Aster Aster novae-angliae, Pale-purple Coneflower Echinacea pallida, Gray-headed Coneflower Ratibido pinnota, Ironweed Vernonia fasciculosa. Five species of “garden” wildflowers performed well: Common Cosmos Cosmos bipinnatus, Yellow Cosmos Cosmos sulphureus, Cornflower Centaurea cyanus, Goldenwave Coreopsis sincioria, Black-eyed Susan Rudbeckia hiria. …
