A Service-Learning Contract: Clarity, Commitment, And Completion, Darroll Bussler Jan 1996

A Service-Learning Contract: Clarity, Commitment, And Completion, Darroll Bussler

Special Topics, General

A student was reporting her service-learning experience to her classmates during a reflection session. She was hesitant to begin ... and then explained \Vhy. Everyone in the class seemed to be having fun and fulfillment in their experiences. She said, "My experience isn't fun. I don't know what I'm supposed to be doing; I don't even think they know I'm there, and I don't think I want to finish my service." She then said, "I think we need something like ... a learning contract."

Journal Of The Community Development Society Vol. 27, No. 02, Center For Public Affairs Research (Cpar)

Publications

Good Bye. This editor's note completes my five years as the editor of the Journal of the Community Development Society. It has been a fast and a very important five years. Like most things in this dramatically changing world, in those five years the practice of community development has changed. Likewise the Community Development Society has changed, and I think so has its Journal. Two of these changes are worth noting. First, while still retaining its social science character, the Journal has published articles with broader research questions. In other words, the goals of the articles have changed. While many …

Publications

This year the Community Development Society continues its movement toward an international organization devoted to the practice and theory of purposive community change by holding its first annual meeting away from North America. The Australian members of CDS have organized a world class conference on community development. It is sure to have an impact on the Society for many years to come. In commemoration of the first "international" conference, this edition of the Journal of the Community Development Society is devoting a significant portion of its articles to research and commentary on community development theory and practice taking place outside …

Performance Accomodation To Midsole Hardness During Running, Barry T. Bates, Nikolaos Stergiou Jan 1996

Performance Accomodation To Midsole Hardness During Running, Barry T. Bates, Nikolaos Stergiou

Journal Articles

The effects of shoe hardness on impact force characteristics during running were elevated using both a group and single subject analysis approach. It was hypothesized that non-significant shoe effects previously reported could have resulted from the experimental design and analysis procedures employed. The present study evaluated 18 runners using a single subject procedure in addition to a group design (Shoe Condition X (Subject X Shoe Hardness)). ANOVA analyses identified significant differences (p < 0.05) between mean impact forces for the soft shoe condition and mean maximum knee flexion angles for the hard shoe condition. Individual subject analyses identified no significant (p <0:05) impact force differences for eight subjects while I 0 subjects exhibited significant differences. A significant correlation coefficient of -0.59 between impact force and maximum knee flexion suggested that some accommodation took place on average but the extent varied among subject. Post-hoc group analyses identified a relationship (r = 0.59) between impact tester results and impact forces for one subgroup of subjects. The results support the hypothesis that subjects can and do respond differently to the same perturbation ·and that these differential responses can compromise group analysis results.

Tips For The Academic Teacher Working With Nonnative Speakers Of English, Sue Lee, Frank Bramlett Jan 1996

Tips For The Academic Teacher Working With Nonnative Speakers Of English, Sue Lee, Frank Bramlett

English Faculty Publications

The international student population in the United States is growing by leaps and bounds; our need for teachers who specialize in English as a Second Language, therefore, also grows with each passing day. But everyone cannot be an ESL specialist, right? What we must also, consider is the fact that many of our students who speak a language other than English as their native language are actually born here in the United States. Surprising? Not really when we consider that the demographic composition of major urban areas today consists significantly of families whose parents and grandparents come from different cultures …

Service Learning Teacher Training Manual, Scott Richardson Jan 1996

Service Learning Teacher Training Manual, Scott Richardson

Guides

This is a guide for trainers who view service learning as a teaching strategy to improve instruction. The guide assumes that the participants in the training are teachers who will use service learning to help their students achieve the objectives of the school curriculum. Some of the training sessions, such as reflection and defining service learning, may be useful for non-school-based programs as well. The bulk of the guide, however, is shaped by our belief that service learning is good education. We view service learning as an experiential teaching strategy with an ultimate aim of promoting student understanding of established …

Opportunity For All: Linking Service-Learning And Business Education, Edward Zlotkowski Jan 1996

Opportunity For All: Linking Service-Learning And Business Education, Edward Zlotkowski

Higher Education

A major criticism of contemporary business education centers on its failure to help business students achieve sufficient educational breath, particularly with regard to the external environment of business. The service-learning movement offers business faculty an excellent opportunity to address this deficiency. By developing curricular projects linked to community needs, faculty can further their students' technical skills while helping them simultaneously develop greater inter-personal, inter-cultural, and ethical sensitivity.

Defining Excellence For School-Linked Services, Esther Wattenberg, Yvonne Pearson

School K-12

For more than a decade there has been great interest in educational circles about school-linked services ways by which children can receive the full range of social services they need to enter their classrooms ready to learn and parents can get the help they need to support their children's development. This publication presents summaries of the proceedings from a day-long conference on school-linked services. The following presentations are summarized:(1) "Welcoming Remarks" (Esther Wattenberg) ;(2) "Anchoring School-Linked Services in Sobering Realities: A Glance at the Past and a Searching Stare at the Present" (Paula Allen Meares);(3)"Response from School Social Workers: A …

Downtown As A Classroom: Social/Architechtural History Of Beaufort, Lady's Island Middle School

Project Summaries

We live in a town rich in history and architecture, yet nowhere in the 12-year curriculum are these subjects taught. The students and staff of Lady's Island Middle are working to rectify this omission. The purpose of "Downtown As A Classroom" is to discover (via oral histories and written records), write, illustrate and publish a top-quality children's account of folklore and fact based on Beaufort's architectural past and present.

The basic premise is that every building tells a story. It is these family stories which 150+ eighth graders, representing the full spectrum of student population, will learn and preserve. By …

Experiential Education And Civic Learning, Robert H. Mckenzie Jan 1996

Experiential Education And Civic Learning, Robert H. Mckenzie

Civic Engagement

not only demands experiential education; civic learning reinforces for us the nature of experiential education. To explore the relationship between the two, we must understand a number of factors: the nature of the contemporary challenges to civic learning; the relationship of the purposes that educational institutions choose to that civic challenge; the pedagogical choices available for learning civically; and the relationship of learning theory to the centrality of choice that lies at the core of civic learning. At the end of this investigation, we will find some important guiding principles that civic learning suggests for how we engage in experiential …

Community Service To The Elderly A Service-Learning Model: Guidelines For Replication, James M. Mccrea, Sherry G. Cottom

Curriculum

At the University of Pittsburgh, Generations Together, an Intergenerational Studies Program develops programs that bring young and old together in ways that benefit both generations. The University Challenge for Excellence Program (DCEP) works with entering students who are often first generation, mostly African-American, and who may be in need of special assistance during their first year. UCEP seeks ways to raise their self esteem, give them a sense of purpose, connect them to the University, and ultimately to retain them at Pitt through graduation. In 1994, these two university programs joined together with the Housing Authority of the City of …

The All-Pay Auction With Complete Information, Michael R. Baye, Dan Kovenock, Casper G. De Vries Jan 1996

The All-Pay Auction With Complete Information, Michael R. Baye, Dan Kovenock, Casper G. De Vries

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

In a (first price) all-pay auction, bidders simultaneously submit bids for an item. All players forfeit their bids, and the high bidder receives the item. This auction is widely used in economics to model rent seeking, R&D races, political contests, and job promotion tournaments. We fully characterize equilibrium for this class of games, and show that the set of equilibria is much larger than has been recognized in the literature. When there are more than two players, for instance, we show that even when the auction is symmetric there exists a continuum of asymmetric equilibria. Moreover, for economically important configurations …

An Extended Two-Phase Method For Accessing Sections Of Out-Of-Core Arrays, Rajeev Thakur, Alok Choudhary Jan 1996

An Extended Two-Phase Method For Accessing Sections Of Out-Of-Core Arrays, Rajeev Thakur, Alok Choudhary

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

A number of applications on parallel computers deal with very large data sets that cannot fit in the main memory. In such applications, data must be stored in files on disks and fetched into memory during program execution. Parallel programs with large out-of-core arrays stored in files must read/write smaller sections of the arrays from/to files. In this paper, we describe a method for accessing sections of out-of-core arrays efficiently. Our method, the extended two phase method, uses collective I/O: Processors cooperate to combine several I/O requests into fewer larger granularity requests, reorder requests so that the file is accessed …

Women-Church And Egalitarianism: Revisioning "In Christ There Are No More Distinctions Between Male And Female", Susan A. Farrell Jan 1996

Women-Church And Egalitarianism: Revisioning "In Christ There Are No More Distinctions Between Male And Female", Susan A. Farrell

Publications and Research

This chapter from The Power of Gender in Religion (eds G.A. Weatherby and S.A. Farrell) illustrates how women in the Roman Catholic Church are expanding the roles of women and challenging the patriarchal and hierarchical Roman Catholic Church practices. They are accomplishing this through an umbrella organization of feminist groups which maintain their catholic identty while critiquing the church from within.
