Reconstructing Reality: Interpreting The Aeroplane Disaster News Story, Ana C. Garner Jan 1996

Reconstructing Reality: Interpreting The Aeroplane Disaster News Story, Ana C. Garner

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

At 9 a.m. on 31 August 1988, Delta Flight 1141 crashed on take‐off, killing 13 people and leaving 94 survivors. Existing research has furthered our insight into media coverage of disasters but it has not broadened our understanding of disaster narrative interpretations and disaster behaviour education. In total, 24 in‐depth interviews explore reader interpretations of print‐mediated disaster reality and the Delta 1141 disaster. Disaster news stories provide the frames people use to interpret aeroplane disaster behaviour. Concludes the media need to recognize that their pedagogical role extends beyond disaster reporting and includes disaster behaviour information.

Human Kind In Literature: The Ideals Of Fiction - The Fiction Of Ideals, Lawrence Kimmel Jan 1996

Human Kind In Literature: The Ideals Of Fiction - The Fiction Of Ideals, Lawrence Kimmel

Philosophy Faculty Research

The prophets of suspicion have done their work. Ours is a time of profound skepticism and open cynicism with respect to both the profession and promise of ideals. Too often in the name of some seemingly worthy ideal, we have been led individually and collectively to the deepest and most devastating evils. Religious ideals of the sanctity of life and universal charity sour into zeal and foster self-righteous exclusion and persecution of the non-believer; political ideals of social and economic freedom calcify into operational ideologies which justify enslavement and genocide; moral ideals which acclaim a healthy community authorize censorship, repression, …

Discourse And Discharge: Linguistic Analysis And Abuse Of The "Exemption By Declaration" Process In Bankruptcy, Kenneth D. Ferguson Jan 1996

Discourse And Discharge: Linguistic Analysis And Abuse Of The "Exemption By Declaration" Process In Bankruptcy, Kenneth D. Ferguson

Faculty Works

In Taylor v. Freeland & Kronz, the United States Supreme Court interpreted section 522(1) of the Bankruptcy Code according to its "plain meaning" and permitted a debtor to exempt $110,000 that was ineligible for exemption under substantive exemption law. The decision of the Court was premised on the fact that there was no timely objection to the claim of exemption. Although conceding that its decision might tempt debtors to claim exemptions in property ineligible for exemption on the chance that the trustee and creditors would fail to object in time, the Court cataloged a number of other remedies, including denial …

The Foraging Behavior Of Peromyscus Leucopus In A Tallgrass Prairie, Cara Jane Joos Jan 1996

The Foraging Behavior Of Peromyscus Leucopus In A Tallgrass Prairie, Cara Jane Joos

Honors Capstones

This experiment was conducted to discover what effect predation, food supplementation, microhabitat, season, and lunar light levels had on the foraging behavior of Peromyscus leucopus in a tall grass prairie. The research was conducted over four nights in the spring and fall of 1995. The pre-existing site contained four predator exclusion plots and four predator access plots. These were used throughout the experiment and the other variables were manipulated at this site. GUDs (giving up densities) were measured to determine the relative foraging levels for each variable. Live trapping census was conducted monthly for the duration of the experiment. Lunar …

A Step In The Development Of A Language Screening Device For Three-Year-Olds, Tricia N. Sabathne Jan 1996

A Step In The Development Of A Language Screening Device For Three-Year-Olds, Tricia N. Sabathne

Honors Capstones

The purpose of the current study was to extend previous work in the development of an elicited sentence imitation screening device for three-year-olds' language abilities. The nine sentences developed for presentation to the children formed a brief story and had supporting illustrations. The task was given to six children with ages ranging from two years, nine months to three years, ten months, who displayed typically developing language abilities in order to determine if the task was age-appropriate. Two different scoring systems were used to quantitatively evaluate performance on the task; in addition, qualitative descriptions of the children's efforts were also …

Comparison In The Its-2,Or Second Internal Transcribed Spacer, Among The Different Geographic Isolates Of Strongyloides Stercoralis, John J. Yoon Jan 1996

Comparison In The Its-2,Or Second Internal Transcribed Spacer, Among The Different Geographic Isolates Of Strongyloides Stercoralis, John J. Yoon

Honors Capstones

The phylum Nematoda or round worms comprises numerous free-living and parasitic species. The free-living forms are distributed ubiquitously in soil and water. The parasitic species live in annelids, arthropods, mollusks, plants, and vertebrates. It is estimated that over 80,000 species are parasites of vertebrates. Species parasitic in humans range in length from 2.0 mm (Strongyloides stercoralis) to over a meter (Dracunculus medinensis). The sexes are usually separate. The male, which is smaller than the female, usually has a curved posterior end and, in some species, copulatory spicules and a bursa (Brown, 1975). This study is focused on Strongyloides stercoralis, a …

The Critical Period For The Development Of Tactile Sensitivity, Wendy L. Roos Jan 1996

The Critical Period For The Development Of Tactile Sensitivity, Wendy L. Roos

Honors Capstones

The focus of this project was to ascertain whether or not there is a critical period, or "Window of Opportunity" in the development of the sense of touch, and its impact on an individual's braille reading ability. A proposed solution to this problem is needed in order to evaluate the need for beginning braille instruction as early as possible or tactile sensitivity training in low vision readers with the potential to lose their sight later on in life. The theoretical aspectsof tactile sensitivity are first discussedto provide a background into the exploration of this topic. The research study designed to …

The Dayton Peace Agreement: Constitutionalism And Ethnicity, Ronald Slye Jan 1996

The Dayton Peace Agreement: Constitutionalism And Ethnicity, Ronald Slye

Faculty Articles

It has been almost five years since the violent dissolution of Yugoslavia. An estimated 200,000 civilians have been killed, over two million people have been displaced from their homes, tens of thousands have been tortured and raped, and Europe has hosted yet another of the world's genocides. While the recently concluded Dayton Peace Agreement has resulted in a temporary cessation of the armed conflict, serious concerns have been raised regarding efforts to rebuild and repair the institutions of civil society. Little attention has been paid, however, to the constitutional structure of the newly created state of Bosnia and Herzegovina. While …
