Validation Of The Neonatal Infant Pain Scale, Annette L. Backus Jan 1996

Validation Of The Neonatal Infant Pain Scale, Annette L. Backus

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to validate the Neonatal Infant Pain Scale (NIPS). This was accomplished by determining inter-rater reliability, the ability to measure pain in infants of any gestational age, and the relationship between the NIPS behavioral scores and physiological parameters of heart rate, respiratory rate and oxygen saturation.; Inter-rater reliability on total scores obtained before, during and after the procedure yielded correlations ranging from 0.69 to 0.90, which were significant at p {dollar}<{dollar}.001. All groups showed significant increases in NIPS scores after a painful procedure was started. Total mean scores before, during and after a procedure were 0.44, 3.04 and 0.6 respectively. There were no significant correlations between NIPS scores and heart rate, respiratory rate or oxygen saturation.; The NIPS appears to be a reliable tool for evaluating pain in neonates of any gestational age. Physiological measures were not reliable indicators of pain in neonates.

Federalizing Crime: Assessing The Impact On The Federal Courts, Sara Sun Beale Jan 1996

Federalizing Crime: Assessing The Impact On The Federal Courts, Sara Sun Beale

Faculty Scholarship

This article examines the history of federal criminal jurisdiction and criminal enforcement, and reviews federal caseload statistics. The federal criminal caseload grew dramatically between 1980 and the mid-1990s, but this increase tells only part of the story. The federal criminal caseload has fluctuated widely over the past two decades, and the number of criminal cases today is about the same as it was in the early 1970s. Although criminal cases now account for only one-fifth of the federal caseload, they take a large and disproportionate share of federal judicial resources. In more than one-third of federal judicial districts, criminal cases …

Why Are There So Few Black Lawyers In Corporate Law Firms? An Institutional Analysis, Mitu Gulati, David B. Wilkins Jan 1996

Why Are There So Few Black Lawyers In Corporate Law Firms? An Institutional Analysis, Mitu Gulati, David B. Wilkins

Faculty Scholarship

Although the number of black students graduating from law schools has increased significantly in recent decades, blacks still make up a very small minority of the lawyers working in large corporate law firms. Available data indicate that these firms hire few blacks, and that those they do hire are more likely than their white peers to leave the firms before becoming partners. Conventional explanations blame the underrepresentation of blacks in corporate firms on either the racism of firms and their clients, or a shortage of qualified, interested black candidates. While acknowledging that in some instances these factors may help to …

Use Of Geographic Information System Technology To Assess Vulnerability To Shallow Groundwater Contamination., Brenda G. Bruner Jan 1996

Use Of Geographic Information System Technology To Assess Vulnerability To Shallow Groundwater Contamination., Brenda G. Bruner

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Geographic Information System (GIS) technology was used to develop a local scale screening procedure for assessing shallow ground water's vulnerability to nitrate contamination. The procedure was based on the spatial distribution of ten key physical and chemical properties of soils. Both flow characteristics and attenuation capabilities of soils were incorporated into the assessment. Land surface areas were classified by the GIS to show the level of vulnerability present at a site as a result of existing natural conditions. The procedure produced a Vulnerability Index (VI), and resulted in VI ranging from 4.98 to 6.72 for the study area (with ten …

Magneto-Optical Properties Of Cubic Ferromagnetic Metals., Neeraj Arvind Mainkar Jan 1996

Magneto-Optical Properties Of Cubic Ferromagnetic Metals., Neeraj Arvind Mainkar

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

I present a first principles, all electron, linear combination of Gaussian orbitals calculation of a comprehensive collection of magneto-optical properties of the cubic ferromagnetic metals nickel, iron and cobalt based on density functional theory. Among the many magneto-optical effects, this is the first ab initio study of the equatorial Kerr effect for absorption in the optical as well as the X-ray region, where it is called the X-ray magnetic linear dichroism. I find that in the optical region, this effect is of the order of 2% while in the X-ray region, it is of the order of 1% for the …

Improved Method For Selecting Kick Tolerance During Deepwater Drilling Operations., Shiniti Ohara Jan 1996

Improved Method For Selecting Kick Tolerance During Deepwater Drilling Operations., Shiniti Ohara

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

One of the most critical aspects in the design of oil and gas wells is the selection of the depths at which steel casing is set. As the length of open borehole increases, the risk of formation fracturing during drilling operations increases. Formation fracture often leads to an underground blowout that can be very expensive to control. Because of the special problems involved in drilling deepwater well, accurately measuring the risk of formation fracture is essential. A calculated parameter called "kick tolerance" is often used to measure this risk. In this study, improved computer software specifically designed for computing kick …

Reconstructing Educational Experience: A Postmodern Perspective., Jeanne Edwards Robertson Jan 1996

Reconstructing Educational Experience: A Postmodern Perspective., Jeanne Edwards Robertson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Education in America today is dominated by the either/or thinking of modernism. This mode of thought is connected to both the concepts and methods of modern, mechanistic, Newtonian science. However, the attendant reductionistic methodology has been elevated beyond its realm of efficacy to the level of a world view, a metaphysical level. This is demonstrated by the omnipresence of the machine metaphor in all areas of human endeavor. The machine is the root metaphor of modernism. John Dewey speaks of a "new order of conceptions" necessary for significant change. These new order concepts are manifest in the new or postmodern …

Holocene To Late Pleistocene Stratigraphy Of The Mahakam Delta, Kalimantan, Indonesia., Johan C. Sydow Jan 1996

Holocene To Late Pleistocene Stratigraphy Of The Mahakam Delta, Kalimantan, Indonesia., Johan C. Sydow

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Late Pleistocene depositional cycles of the Mahakam shelf contain stratal geometries that indicate a progradational continuum, from falling stage in sea level through to initial rise. These findings contrast with popular sequence stratigraphic concepts which predict that large, rapid sea-level falls, typical of the Late Pleistocene, should result in sediment bypass of the entire shelf. The Mahakam shelf is a mixed siliciclastic-carbonate depositional setting. Extensive, thick carbonate buildups are produced by prolific green algal Halimeda bioherm accretion during transgression and highstand flooding of the shelf. The 60 by 200 km study area lies within 2$\sp\circ$ of the equator, in the …

Crystal Plasticity Model With Back Stress Evolution., Wei Huang Jan 1996

Crystal Plasticity Model With Back Stress Evolution., Wei Huang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this work, two backstress models and a modified yield criterion for crystalline materials are proposed. The proposed work is for the identification of texture development in metals when subjected to large deformation processes such as rolling, extrusion, stamping and deep drawing, etc. These models are incorporated into a numerical procedure similar to the approaches by Asaro (1983), Peirce et al. (1983), Nemat-Nasser (1983), and Rashid and Nemat-Nasser (1992). Also, similar to their approaches, a two-dimensional crystal structure is used for a feasibility study of the model by solving a simple shear problem. More importantly, the proposed formulations are strain …

Composted Municipal Waste And Fertilizer Effects On Soils And Sugarcane., Xianliang Wan Jan 1996

Composted Municipal Waste And Fertilizer Effects On Soils And Sugarcane., Xianliang Wan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Application of composted municipal waste to agricultural lands has potential benefits to improve soil fertility and crop yield. It may lead to accumulation of heavy metals within soils and leaching of nutrients and heavy metals into the ground water. The objectives of this study were to investigate: (1) the effects of composted municipal waste and fertilizer on soil chemical properties and sugarcane elemental uptake and yield; and (2) the leachability of elements in compost amended soils. Results of three field experiments from a Baldwin silty clay loam and a Memphis silt loam showed that compost application at $\ge$33.6 Mg/ha increased …

Synthesis Of Uv/X-Ray Sensitive Polymers And Their Applications As Resists., Jack Dean Davies Jan 1996

Synthesis Of Uv/X-Ray Sensitive Polymers And Their Applications As Resists., Jack Dean Davies

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Aliphatic polycarbonates were synthesized by condensation of the bischloroformate of 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol with cyclic aliphatic diols. Polycarbonates that lacked flexible methylene units in the backbone processed T$\sb{\rm g}\ >$ 139$\sp\circ$C. Copolycarbonates acted as resists when combined with cobalt(III)-am(m)ine tetraphenylborate complexes which act as photointiators, with tetraphenylborate serving as counter anion. The photoinitiator liberates either ammonia or ethylene diamine base upon UV exposure and the polycarbonate backbone is subject to nucleophilic attack at the carbonyl linkage by the base. Image tone was dependent on the base used. Amine complexes, Co(NH$\sb3)\sb6\sp{3+}$ effected a positive tone due to ammonia induced main chain degradation at …

Synthesis, Molecular Characterization And Physical Behavior Of Novel Polymers And Polymer Blends: Poly(Aryl Ether)Sulfones, Labeled Poly(Gamma-Stearyl-Alpha, L-Glutamate) And Poly(Gamma-Stearyl-Alpha, L-Glutamate)/Polyethylene Blends., Frederick Harald Roos

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The structures of a number of novel poly(aryl ether) sulfones (nitro, aminomethyl, methyl and ethyl derivatives), which have applications as separation membranes, were determined unequivocally for the first time by applying sophisticated two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) methods. The degree of substitution (DS) was found to vary among the products from 0.1 percent to about 2 percent (DS: nitro, 2.0; amino, 0.11; aminomethyl, 0.76; methyl, 2.12; ethyl, 2.05). Poly($\gamma$-stearyl-$\alpha$,L-glutamate), PSLG, is a "fuzzy rod" polymer composed of a central backbone that can exist as an $\alpha$-helix. This backbone, a polypeptide, is hydrophilic. The stearyl side chains (the "fuzzy" part of …

The Cytoplasmic N,N'-Diacetylchitobiase Gene From Vibrio Parahaemolyticus: Sequence Analysis, Protein Secretion, And Secretion System Development., Michael Hongli Wu Jan 1996

The Cytoplasmic N,N'-Diacetylchitobiase Gene From Vibrio Parahaemolyticus: Sequence Analysis, Protein Secretion, And Secretion System Development., Michael Hongli Wu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The nucleotide sequence of the gene encoding the cytoplasmic $N,N\sp\prime$-diacetylchitobiase from Vibrio parahaemolyticus has been determined. The deduced peptide sequence surprisingly has minimum evolutionary relationship to two other reported $N,N\sp\prime$-diacetylchitobiases from vibrios, except for highly conserved regions which are also homologous with lysosomal beta-hexosaminidases from eukaryotes including humans. In contrast, the other two sequenced chitobiases from vibrios are much more closely related to each other. This 85 kDa cytoplasmic protein, as revealed from the sequence, appears to be a unique protein, lacking a signal sequence and genetically distant from other known enzymes of similar function. This is consistent with its …

Scale, Resolution And Resampling: Representation And Analysis Of Remotely Sensed Landscapes Across Scale In Geographic Information Systems., Stephanie Jean Weigel

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Earth system scientists are increasingly using the technologies of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) in their analyses of earth system processes and patterns. These investigations take place over a wide range of scales, from the local to the global. Global change researchers focus on both the physical and human dimensions of changes in the earth's landscapes, which occur across a range of scales and may be scale dependent. The way in which landscapes are represented in GIS and RS, using specific spatial data models and data spatial resolutions, affects the subsequent analyses that can be performed. Optimally …
