Thermally Induced Core-Electron Binding-Energy Shifts In Transition Metals: An Experimentalinvestigation Of Ta(100), D. Mark Riffe, B. Kim, W. Hale, J. L. Erskine

High-resolution photoemission spectra from the 4f7/2 levels of Ta(100) have been obtained between 77 K and room temperature. The data show an increase in both the surface and bulk core-level binding energies (BE’s) as the temperature is raised: between 77 and 293 K the bulk and surface BE’s increase by 31±3 and 13±2 meV, respectively. A model calculation of the bulk binding-energy increase, which is based upon the lattice expansion of the solid, is in good agreement with the experimental results and indicates that the shifts arise from both initial- and final-state effects that are of comparable magnitude. Low Temperature Hydrothermal Synthesis Of Nanophase Batio3 And Bafe12019 Powders, Fatih Dogan, Shawn O'Rourke, Mao-Xu Qian, Mehmet Sarikaya
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Nanocrystalline powders with an average particle size of 50 nm have been synthesized in two materials systems under hydrothermal conditions below 100°C. Processing variables, such as temperature, concentration and molar ratio of reactants and reaction time were optimized to obtain particles of reduced size and stoichiometric compositions. Hydrothermal reaction takes place between Ba (OH)2 solution and titanium/iron precursors in sealed polyethylene bottles in the BaTiO3 and BaFe12019 systems, respectively. While crystalline BaTiO3 forms relatively fast within a few hours, formation of fully crystalline and stoichiometric BaFe12019 require considerably longer reaction times up to several weeks and strongly …

Making Savages Of Us All: White Women, Pueblo Indians, And The Controversy Over Indian Dances In The 1920s, Margaret D. Jacobs

Historians who have covered the dance controversy usually treat it just in passing as one of the events in John Collier's reform career before he became Franklin Roosevelt's Commissioner of Indian Affairs. They have generally characterized the public debate over Indian dances as a struggle over whether religious freedom should be extended to Native Americans. To many Native Americans, the threat to ban Indian dances certainly did impinge on their religious practices. Yet, the controversy itself involved more than a constitutional debate on religious freedom. Many of the non-Indian participants in the controversy were white women who, in an era …
