The dissertation is a study of ship mortgages as a means of ship financing and maritime liens being closely linked with and affecting this banking security. It is based on investigation of legislation governing maritime liens and mortgages in legal systems of different developed maritime nations and three international conventions dealing with these matters. The first part of the second chapter briefly outlines the possibilities of ship financing, showing that mortgage loans are still broadly used and very much preferred. Trying to maintain Liberia’s position as the Leader in Registration Tonnage in the face of Strong International Open Registry Competition is all what this dissertation is about. Until 1993/1994, Liberia has been the largest registry in the world in tenns of gross registered tonnage. Considering the size and population of Liberia, proceeds received from its open registry activities is significant. Numerous efforts have been made by international maritime communities to build environmentally sound tank ships and tanker designs have been changed accordingly through the years. Yet, tankers operating in the 21st Century will be expected to meet increasingly stringent environmental requirements. This dissertation is a study of design concepts of oil tankers for the prevention of oil pollution, examining each structural preventive method along with current design criteria stipulated in international legislations, especially in MARPOL 73/78. The temporal envelope of plasma density oscillations in the wake of an intense (l∼4×1018 W/cm2, λ = 1 μm) laser pulse (400 fs) is measured using forward Thomson scattering from a copropagating, frequency-doubled probe pulse. The wakefield oscillations in a fully ionized helium plasma (ne = 3×1019 cm-3) are observed to reach maximum amplitude ( δne/ne∼0.1) 300 fs after the pump pulse. The wakefield growth ( 3.5 ps-1) and decay ( 1.9 ps-1) rates are consistent with the forward Raman …

Magnetic Dynamics In Underdoped Yba2Cu3O7−X: Direct Observation Of A Superconducting Gap, Pengcheng Dai, Mohana Yethiraj, Herbert A. Mook, Terrence B. Lindemer, Fatih Dogan
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Polarized and unpolarized triple-axis neutron measurements were performed on an underdoped crystal of YBa2Cu3O7−x (x = 0.4 ±0.02, Tc = 62.7K). Our results indicate, contrary to earlier evidence, that the spin excitations in the superconducting state are essentially the same as those in the fully doped material except that the unusual 41 meV resonance is observed at 34.8 meV. The normal state spin excitations are characterized by a weakly energy-dependent continuum whose temperature dependence shows the clear signature of a superconducting gap at Tc. The enhancement at the resonance is accompanied by …
