Solidification/Stabilization Of Petroleum Contaminated Soils With Cold Mix Asphalt Concrete, Nazhat Aboobaker Oct 1996

Solidification/Stabilization Of Petroleum Contaminated Soils With Cold Mix Asphalt Concrete, Nazhat Aboobaker

Theses

In this research Petroleum Contaminated Soils (PCSs) are recycled in Cold Mix Asphalt (CMA), to produce a useful product that can control potential environmental threats. The stability, durability, and hydraulic conductivity are three important engineering parameters that need to be considered when using petroleum contaminated soils (PCSs) in cold mix asphalt (CMA). In this research, stability, durability, and hydraulic conductivity due to the addition of six different PCSs into CMA is investigated. The stability test were performed to determine if cold mix asphalt made with petroleum contaminated soil can withstand heavy traffic. The freeze-thaw, and wet-dry tests were performed to …

Spice Compatible Equivalent Circuit Models Of Skeletal Muscle Tissue, Robert B. Szlavik, Hubert De Bruin Oct 1996

Spice Compatible Equivalent Circuit Models Of Skeletal Muscle Tissue, Robert B. Szlavik, Hubert De Bruin

Biomedical Engineering

The authors present equivalent circuit models of skeletal muscle tissue for the directions parallel and transverse to the fiber. The parallel model is based on a distributed parameter equivalent circuit approach where the tissue between the electrodes is divided into small segments, each of which is represented by an equivalent circuit. Parameters for the equivalent circuits me calculated from the electrical characteristics of the tissue components and their physical arrangement. The authors compare the conductivity frequency response of the equivalent circuit modelling approach to other models presented in the literature. The advantage to the authors' equivalent circuit approach is that …

The In Vitro Evaluation Of Various Biodegradable Composites Used In Internal Fixation Devices, Hui-Chen Hsieh Oct 1996

The In Vitro Evaluation Of Various Biodegradable Composites Used In Internal Fixation Devices, Hui-Chen Hsieh

Theses

In vitro degradation kinetics and mechanical properties of various composites, comprising a polycarbonate (DTE polymer) reinforced with CaP glass fiber, synthetic ceramic and non-ceramic hydroxyapatite (HA-500,OsteoGen HA) were investigated.

They were soaked in the SBF solution with a constant pH of 7.4 at 37°C for 5 days. The DTE/CaP composite degraded in an acid manner such that a large amount of NaOH was required but with a small decrease in calcium ion concentration. By contrast, the DTE/OsteoGen HA composite required comparable amounts of NaOH, but with a concomitantly large decrease in calcium ion concentration. This showed that the OsteoGen HA …

Energy Metabolism, Enzymatic Flux Capacities, And Metabolic Flux Rates In Flying Honeybees, R. K. Suarez, J. R.B. Lighton, B. Joos, S. (Stephen) P. Roberts, J. F. Harrison Oct 1996

Energy Metabolism, Enzymatic Flux Capacities, And Metabolic Flux Rates In Flying Honeybees, R. K. Suarez, J. R.B. Lighton, B. Joos, S. (Stephen) P. Roberts, J. F. Harrison

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Honeybees Rely Primarily on the Oxidation of Hexose Sugars to Provide the Energy Required for Flight. Measurement of VCO2 (Equal to VO2, Because VCO2/VO2 = 1.0 during Carbohydrate Oxidation) during Flight Allowed Estimation of Steady-State Flux Rates through Pathways of Flight Muscle Energy Metabolism. Comparison of V(Max) Values for Flight Muscle Hexokinase, Phosphofructokinase, Citrate Synthase, and Cytochrome C Oxidase with Rates of Carbon and O2 Flux during Flight Reveal that These Enzymes Operate Closer to V(Max) in the Flight Muscles of Flying Honeybees Than in Other Muscles Previously Studied. Possible Mechanistic …

Estimation Of Direct And Maternal Breed Effects For Prediction Of Expected Progeny Differences For Birth And Weaning Weights In Three Multibreed Populations, F. A. Rodriguez-Almeida, L. Dale Van Vleck, K. E. Gregory Oct 1996

Estimation Of Direct And Maternal Breed Effects For Prediction Of Expected Progeny Differences For Birth And Weaning Weights In Three Multibreed Populations, F. A. Rodriguez-Almeida, L. Dale Van Vleck, K. E. Gregory

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Direct and maternal breed effects on birth and 200-d weights were estimated for nine parental breeds (Hereford [H], Angus [A], Braunvieh [B], Limousin [L], Charolais [C], Simmental [S], Gelbvieh [G], Red Poll [R], and Pinzgauer [P]) that contributed to three composite populations (MARC I = ¼B, ¼C, ¼L, ⅛H, ⅛A; MARC II = ¼G, ¼S, ¼H, ¼A; and MARC III = ¼R, ¼P, ¼H, ¼A). Records from each population, the composite plus pure breeds and crosses used to create each composite, were analyzed separately. The animal model included fixed effects of contemporary group (birth year-sex-dam age), proportions of individual and …
