"Irresponsible" Reproduction, Linda C. Mcclain Jan 1996

"Irresponsible" Reproduction, Linda C. Mcclain

Faculty Scholarship

In recent years, there have been countless calls for reversing the rise in irresponsibility in American society.' Calls for restoring personal responsibility in both private and political life sound from both of the major political parties as well as from various cultural critics, pundits, and academics. 2 Proponents of a return to personal responsibility wage their battle on numerous fronts, advocating a cultural revolution, a moral revival, and a recovery of "virtue" to bring about a reformation of attitudes and behaviors regarded as troublesome. 3 Many voices now urge that law and public policy should encourage, or require, personal responsibility …

Same-Sex Sexual Harassment Under Title Vii, Dale Carpenter Jan 1996

Same-Sex Sexual Harassment Under Title Vii, Dale Carpenter

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits private employment discrimination on the basis of "sex." In 1986, the United States Supreme Court interpreted the "no sex discrimination" command of Title VII to forbid sexual harassment on the job. In the wake of Meritor Savings Bank v. Vinson, perhaps no single area of the law is in a greater state of flux than the question of whether sexual harassment by a member of one sex against a member of the same sex is actionable under Title VII.

This Article examines the state of federal law on the …

A False Start?: The Impact Of Federal Policy On The Genotechnology Industry, Michael J. Malinowski, Maureen A. O'Rourke Jan 1996

A False Start?: The Impact Of Federal Policy On The Genotechnology Industry, Michael J. Malinowski, Maureen A. O'Rourke

Faculty Scholarship

Important scientific discoveries in the field of human genetics have been reported in the nation's major newspapers since the beginning of the decade, and these discoveries have given rise to a multi-billion dollar industry. Mr. Malinowski and Professor O'Rourke explore the impact of federal policy on the field and the resulting industry. They argue that federal policy in support of genetics research and development has not been followed by the introduction of regulatory and health policy necessary for the efficient and responsible commercialization of the industiy's products. As a consequence, Mr. Malinowski and Professor O'Rourke suggest, federal policy may have …

Facilitating Choice: Judging The Physician's Role In Abortion And Suicide, George J. Annas

Faculty Scholarship

When I was invited to give this talk I thought, "I'll just give my standard slide show on death in America." I thought I would just talk about the right to die, something I can do in my sleep, and everybody would be happy. And you probably would, since it's a pretty good speech. I am going to give it at a Pennsylvania Judges Conference in a couple of weeks, and they will like it. But it is not very challenging, either for me or for you. So, what I want to explore with you today is how judges have …

The Politics Of Human-Embryo Research: Avoiding Ethical Gridlock, George J. Annas, Arthur Caplan, Sherman Elias Jan 1996

The Politics Of Human-Embryo Research: Avoiding Ethical Gridlock, George J. Annas, Arthur Caplan, Sherman Elias

Faculty Scholarship

[...]abortion is about more than politics; it is fundamentally about ethics, morals, equality, and religion, and how we think about abortion reveals much about how we are likely to think about other life-and-death issues in contemporary American medical practice. Because politics as currently practiced seems so unprincipled, there have been sporadic attempts to redefine abortion-related issues as ethical questions and to set up national panels and advisory groups to examine various practices and make recommendations about their ethics.

Questing For Grails: Duplicity, Betrayal And Self-Deception Postmodern Medical Research, George J. Annas Jan 1996

Questing For Grails: Duplicity, Betrayal And Self-Deception Postmodern Medical Research, George J. Annas

Faculty Scholarship

Contemporary physicians and scientists often describe their experi-
ments as part of a search for the "Holy Grail." Sometimes this quest is
expressed more specifically, as when the Human Genome Project is de-
scribed as a search for the "Holy Grail of biology."1 This rhetoric sug-
gests that experimental work is holy, God's work, and that the results will
prove miraculous and good for everyone. But this type of blind devotion
produces uncritical action that can ultimately destroy values essential to
human dignity.

Characterization Of The Structural And Electronic Properties Of Spin-Coupled Dinuclear Copper(Ii) Centers By Proton Nmr Spectroscopy, Julie M. Brink, Rachel A. Rose, Richard C. Holz

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The 1H NMR spectra of a series of well-characterized μ-phenoxo and μ-alkoxo spin-coupled dicopper(II) complexes have been investigated. The complexes studied were [Cu2(BPMP)(OH)]2+ (1) (BPMP = 2,6-bis[[bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amino]methyl]-4-methylphenol), [Cu2(CH3HXTA)(OH)]2- (2) (CH3HXTA = N,N ‘-(2-hydroxy-5-methyl-1,3-xylylene)bis(N-carboxymethylglycine), [Cu2(m-XYL)(OH)]2+ (3) (m-XYL = 2,6-bis[[bis(2-pyridylethyl)amino]methyl]phenol), and [Cu2(TBHP)(OAc)]2+ (4) (TBHP = N,N,N ‘,N  ‘-tetrakis[(2-benzimidazolyl)methyl]-2-hydroxy-1,3-diaminopropane). The magnetic interactions of these complexes range from strongly antiferromagnetically to weakly ferromagnetically coupled. Both …

Service-Learning And School-To-Work: Making The Connections, Andrew Furco Jan 1996

Service-Learning And School-To-Work: Making The Connections, Andrew Furco

Service Learning, General

Recently, much attention has been focused on two federal initiatives that encourage students to explore learning opportunities outside the classroom. The National and Community Service Trust Act and the School to Work Opportunities Act provide states with assistance to develop and implement school programs in which elementary, secondary, and post-secondary students are engaged in learning experiences that are hands-on, meaningful, and connected to the real world. Although the acts differ on their intended educational purposes, both are based on similar educational philosophies, principles, and pedagogies. These fundamental similarities suggest that the two reforms can work synergistically to establish powerful and …

Haematology and Oncology, East Africa

We performed a phase Ia/Ib trial of chimeric anti-GD2 monoclonal antibody 14.18 (ch14.18) in combination with recombinant human granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (rhGM-CSF) to determine the maximum tolerated dose as well as immunologic and biologic responses to the regimen. Sixteen patients with metastatic malignant melanoma received escalating doses of ch14.18 (15-60 mg/m2) administered intravenously for 4 h on day 1. Twenty-four hours later, subcutaneous injections of rhGM-CSF were administered daily for a total of 14 days. Significant side effects were related to ch14.18 infusion and consisted of moderate to severe abdominal and/or extremity pain, blood pressure changes, headache, nausea, diarrhea, peripheral …

Chon On Chen On Chang, Margaret Chon Jan 1996

Chon On Chen On Chang, Margaret Chon

Faculty Articles

This essay attempts to highlight and explore Bob Chang's implicit disclaimers for an Asian American legal scholarship situated within post-structuralism: that it is contingent, ironic, and yearns for a chimerical solidarity, these qualities should not lead to the conclusion that his claims lack positive vision, the narrative space that Chang advocates allows for creative articulations of Asian presence in America, in both theoretical and practical realms. Thus, after considering the nature of the misunderstanding between Chang and Chen, the author will turn briefly to one example of positive articulation-the diaspora perspective-and read it into Jim Chen's text.

Cytogenetic And Isozyme Analysis Of Two Species Of North American Cyprinid Fishes : Rhinichthys Cataractae And Nocomis Micropogon From The Cheat River Drainages Of West Virginia, Syam B. Stoll Jan 1996

Cytogenetic And Isozyme Analysis Of Two Species Of North American Cyprinid Fishes : Rhinichthys Cataractae And Nocomis Micropogon From The Cheat River Drainages Of West Virginia, Syam B. Stoll

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Nocomos micropoqon and Rhinichthys cataractae are species of cyprinid fishes that may hybridize to produce a nominally described species Rhynichthys bowersi. Rhynichthys bowersi is a rare fish endemic to a few watersheds mostly in West Virginia, especially the Cheat River drainage. The resolution of its proper taxonomic status is presently a concern to state and federal regulatory agencies. A number of investigators have determined relatedness of cyprinid fishes by examining chromosomal structure. Telomeres and nucleolar organizer regions are chromosome structures used in inter and intraspecific phylogeny. In this study, fibroblasts from N. micropoqon and R. cataractae were first …
