Studies Of Renal And Biliary Clearance In Severe Kidney Dysfunction: Development Of A Rat Model Mimicking The Pharmacokinetics Of Ceftriaxone In Man., Qinying Zhao Jan 1996

Studies Of Renal And Biliary Clearance In Severe Kidney Dysfunction: Development Of A Rat Model Mimicking The Pharmacokinetics Of Ceftriaxone In Man., Qinying Zhao

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Ceftriaxone (CRO) is a third generation cephalosporin with a long half-life. The majority of patients with severe renal failure have slightly increased half-lives but a small subset of patients exhibit strikingly prolonged half-lives. The reduced ability of this minority of patients to eliminate CRO by biliary excretion will result in excessive drug accumulation. Therefore, the series of studies included in this dissertation were proposed to develop a renal failure model in rats, to examined the pharmacokinetics of CRO in this animal model, and to explore the biliary excretion mechanisms of CRO. Rats pretreated with uranyl nitrate exhibited a dramatic increase …

Square Wave Cathodic (Adsorptive) Stripping Voltammetry Of Selenium, Arsenic, Vanadium, And Molybdenum., Hong Li

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The determination of selenium(IV), arsenic(III), vanadium(V), and molybdenum(VI) at sub-nanomolar to picomolar levels has been investigated with square wave cathodic stripping voltammetry (SWCSV) and square wave adsorptive stripping voltammetry (SWAdSV). Se(IV) and As(III) form intermetallic compounds with copper and are deposited at a hanging mercury drop electrode (HMDE). V(V) and Mo(V) form dihydroxynaphthalene (DHN) complexes which can be adsorbed at an HMDE. The reduction currents for the complexes are greatly enhanced by coupling a catalytic effect of bromate, and reaction mechanisms are reported. Generally, square wave voltammetry gives either better or similar sensitivity to linear scan and differential pulse voltammetry. …

Children's Rights And The Biological Bias: A Comparison Between The United States And Canada In Biological Parent Versus Third-Party Custody Disputes, Erin E. Wynne Jan 1996

Children's Rights And The Biological Bias: A Comparison Between The United States And Canada In Biological Parent Versus Third-Party Custody Disputes, Erin E. Wynne

Connecticut Journal of International Law

This Comment looks at the haunting notion of children as property. The main objective of this Comment is to identify the origin of this notion and illustrate its misplacement in today's society. This Comment compares the existing "biological bias" that has evolved from the "child as property" notion in the United States with the progressive shift away from these ideas in Canada. Part I of this Comment describes the history of children's rights and child custody before the nineteenth century. Part II then discusses the history of childhood in America, specifically, the origin of the child as property and biological …

The Effects Of Mass Extinction On Escalation Of The Naticid Gastropod Predator-Prey System At The Eocene-Oligocene, Vicky D. Melland Jan 1996

The Effects Of Mass Extinction On Escalation Of The Naticid Gastropod Predator-Prey System At The Eocene-Oligocene, Vicky D. Melland

Theses and Dissertations

In 1987, Vermeij proposed the hypothesis of escalation, which states that biological hazards, such as predation, have increased through the Phanerozoic. This hypothesis has been extremely controversial due to the fact that it assumes that biotic factors, such as predation, have had an important role in evolution. Several studies have focused on the validity of the hypothesis of escalation. Kelley and Hansen (1996) offered a modified exposition of the escalation hypothesis. The Kelley-Hansen hypothesis states that escalation cycles are punctuated by periods of mass extinction. The periods of mass extinction would preferentially eliminate the highly escalated prey and, therefore, a …

Hydrologic Factors Affecting The Discharge Of Ground Water In The Red River Of The North Basin, Northeastern North Dakota, Michael Lee Strobel Jan 1996

Hydrologic Factors Affecting The Discharge Of Ground Water In The Red River Of The North Basin, Northeastern North Dakota, Michael Lee Strobel

Theses and Dissertations

Ground-water discharge from bedrock aquifers contributes significant amounts of salinity to the Red River of the North. The area of major discharge is represented on the land surface by saline soils, wetlands, and flowing wells. As tributaries flow through these areas, the dissolved-solids concentrations in the streams increase. This salinity is then transported to the Red River of the North and northward to Canada. The bedrock units that supply the saline water are mainly the Dakota Group. Overlying the bedrock are sediments from numerous glacial advances and lacustrine sediments from glacial Lake Agassiz. These units form confining layers over the …

Putrescine: A Marker Of Stress In Red Spruce Trees, Rakesh Minocha, Walter C. Shortle, Gregory B. Lawrence, Mark B. David, Subhash C. Minocha

Faculty Publications

Aluminum (Al) has been suggested to be an important stress factor in forest decline due to its mobilization in soil following atmospheric deposition of acidic pollutants. A major goal of our research is to develop physiological and biochemical markers of stress in trees using cell cultures and whole plants. Needles of red spruce (Picea rubens) collected from several sites in the northeastern United States and red spruce cells grown in suspension cultures were examined for polyamine and inorganic-ion content. The cells in culture were exposed to various concentrations of Al for different lengths of time. Exposure to Al increased putrescine …

Cows with growing follicle (GF; n = 22) received only PGF{dollar}\\sb{lcub}2\\alpha{rcub}{dollar} on Day 6. Follicular development was monitored by ultrasonography. Mean estradiol-17{dollar}\\beta{dollar} (E{dollar}\\sb2{dollar}) in plasma during six days before estrus was higher …

Examining Template Switching During Retroviral Reverse Transcription., Ella Harvey Bowman Jan 1996

Examining Template Switching During Retroviral Reverse Transcription., Ella Harvey Bowman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Currently, the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) epidemic is world-wide and threatens the entire human population. The causative agent of AIDS is Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), a retrovirus. The HIV viral population exhibits tremendous variation, making the development of vaccines difficult and anti-viral drug therapy ineffective due to the emergence of drug-resistant HIV strains. The main goal of this dissertation is to better understand how retroviral variation is generated to ultimately aid the development of effective anti-retroviral therapies and vaccines. The experiments described throughout this dissertation incorporate the use of simple retrovirus model systems to study template switching events during …

Multisubstrate Analog Inhibitors Of Glucosamine Synthase As Potential Antifungal Agents., Sridar Venkitakrishnan Chittur Jan 1996

Multisubstrate Analog Inhibitors Of Glucosamine Synthase As Potential Antifungal Agents., Sridar Venkitakrishnan Chittur

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Inhibition of the chitin biosynthetic enzyme, glucosamine synthase (EC.2.6.1.16, L-glutamine:D-Fructose-6-phosphate amidotransferase) has been shown to be a promising approach to the development of antifungal agents targeting the cell wall. The best known inhibitors of glucosamine synthase possess epoxy-ketones and {dollar}\\alpha,\\beta{dollar} unsaturated carbonyls. In vivo, these inherently reactive moieties are easily deactivated by nucleophiles like glutathione. Hence we decided to develop inhibitors lacking such highly reactive groups. Development of multisubstrate analogs is a logical approach to inhibition of multisubstrate enzymes. The compounds investigated in our study possess structural modifications of both glutamine and fructose-6-phosphate so as to bind to both binding …

High School Principals' Perceptions Of Selected Middle School Preferred Practices Applied At High Schools Within West Virginia, Washington, And Indiana: Relationship To Student Dropout Rate, Attendance, Disciplinary Actions, And Academic Achievement., Patrick Jay Tray

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Since the early 1970's increasing research has been conducted concerning more effective education of middle school students (Ages 10-14). Over the years a number of preferred practices (19) have been identified which promote a learning environment that more effectively meets the academic, social, and emotional needs of that transitional age as opposed to the more traditional, high school like, practices found within the junior high school setting. It has been concluded by most middle school practitioners and researchers that the more extensive the application of these (19) preferred practices within the Middle School the more improved student performance would be …

Where The Twain Shall Meet: Standing And Remedy In Alaska Center For The Environment V. Browner, Carl E. Bruch Jan 1996

Where The Twain Shall Meet: Standing And Remedy In Alaska Center For The Environment V. Browner, Carl E. Bruch

Duke Environmental Law & Policy Forum

In 1994, the Ninth Circuit affirmed standing for citizens to sue to compel the EPA Administrator to undertake a statewide TMDL program. Although the citizens had standing for only some of the water-quality-limited waters in Alaska, the court held that the underlying cause of action was the EPA's failure to initiate the TMDL process for Alaska. This Note proposes that the court improperly reasoned its way to the correct holding. Like the EPA, the court confused standing to sue with the ultimate scope of the remedy. This Note proposes a three-step analysis to consider issues of standing and remedy. The …

Halting Neotropical Deforestation: Do The Forest Principles Have What It Takes?, Matthew B. Royer

Duke Environmental Law & Policy Forum

INTRODUCTION I crashed into the thick secondary growth, stopping suddenly to duck a certain branch in my path: a fat black bullet ant crawled along it with indifference, an attitude that would have quickly changed had I brushed up against him. I headed toward the large patch of Heliconia just to the right. We had earlier mapped out the clump, and finding it to contain seventeen flower clusters, it was one of the prize patches in the study plot. I took my spot ten paces from the outer clusters, started my stop watch, and waited with field book in hand. …
