Reading Dolly : The Reading Practices Of Adolescent Girls, Suzanne Fleming Jan 1996

Reading Dolly : The Reading Practices Of Adolescent Girls, Suzanne Fleming

Theses : Honours

In recent years the representation and participation of women in the media has received a great deal of attention. So too, has the area of language and gender. Research and discussions around these two fields intersect to provide a context for this research project. Unlike any study located to date, this study provides a theoretical exploration of practices girls employ when reading Dolly, an Australian teen magazine aimed at adolescent females. The project involves 11 year-eight girls from two metropolitan schools and aims to answer questions regarding the reading practices they employ when reading Dolly, the meanings they make with …

Silica-Induced Pulmonary Inflammation And Fibrosis: Toxicological Implications And Pharmacological Modulation., Michael Dimatteo Jan 1996

Silica-Induced Pulmonary Inflammation And Fibrosis: Toxicological Implications And Pharmacological Modulation., Michael Dimatteo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Human exposure to silica is of great occupational concern as it is marked by pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis. The present work was performed to investigate, characterize, and modulate the responses that occur as a result of silica exposure. The intratracheal instillation of silica to rats results in pulmonary fibrosis but the cellular processes involved in the development of the chronic disease have not been well characterized. The hypothesis of this study was that pharmacological intervention early in the silica-induced inflammatory cascade will attenuate fibrosis development. The acute phase response to silica appears by 2 hours after instillation as evidenced by …

Partial Isolation Of The Vitellogenin I Gene And The Characterization Of The Regulation For The Egg Yolk Protein Genes., Robert Stephen Edinger Jan 1996

Partial Isolation Of The Vitellogenin I Gene And The Characterization Of The Regulation For The Egg Yolk Protein Genes., Robert Stephen Edinger

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The chicken egg yolk protein genes, vitellogenin (VTG) I, II, III, and the very low density apolipoprotein II (apoVLDLII), are highly expressed in hepatic parenchymal cells in an estrogen-dependent manner. Compared to the other egg yolk protein genes which respond in approximately 2-4 hours after the primary administration of estrogen, the VTGI does not respond for about 20 hours. The mechanism of activation of the egg yolk protein genes is not completely known. Of the VTG genes VTGII and III promoter regions have been isolated and characterized, whereas the promoter region of the VTGI gene has yet to be identified. …

Intensity Of Systemic Alarms In Content-Specific Fear Conditioning Comparing 20 Percent Vs. 13 Percent Carbon Dioxide-Enriched Air As Ucss., John Patrick Forsyth Jan 1996

Intensity Of Systemic Alarms In Content-Specific Fear Conditioning Comparing 20 Percent Vs. 13 Percent Carbon Dioxide-Enriched Air As Ucss., John Patrick Forsyth

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

To examine the relation between the intensity of systemic bodily events and content-specific fear conditioning to stimuli that are fear-relevant or prepared for such associations, the present study involved a direct comparison between the conditioning effects produced by 20% and 13% CO{dollar}\\sb2{dollar}-enriched air (UCSs) to three CS types: external fear-relevant (snake moving toward viewer), internal fear-irrelevant (human heart beating arrhythmically), or neutral control (flowers swaying in the wind). Sex-balanced groups of undergraduate participants (N = 96) were assigned to one of the three CSs, and within each CS, to either 20% or 13% CO{dollar}\\sb2{dollar}-enriched air (UCSs). A variety of autonomic …

Construction And Characterization Of Monolayer And Multilayer Self-Assembled Systems With Ionically Bound Redox Centers., Daniel Andrei Lowy Jan 1996

Construction And Characterization Of Monolayer And Multilayer Self-Assembled Systems With Ionically Bound Redox Centers., Daniel Andrei Lowy

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A new strategy in devising two-terminal voltammetric sensors is described. In our approach, such detectors are obtained by using ionic forces to confine two different redox groups to the same surface. The one is analyte-sensitive, and acts as the sensing site, while the other is analyte-insensitive, and thus operates as the reference site. The layer-by-layer deposition technique enabled us to attach multilayer systems to the surface of a gold electrode. To these multilayers various redox couples can be bound by ionic forces. One combination of an iron-based pH-sensitive redox group in conjunction with ferri-ferrocyanide was used to demonstrate the working …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study analyzes the interrelationship between disease and the politics of British colonial health care in western Kenya in the period 1895 and 1939. Based on a wide array of archival and secondary sources, the study contextualizes the evolution and development of British colonial health care system within the wider context of socio-economic changes in colonial western Kenya. The impact of various diseases on the nature, tempo and direction of socio-economic change in colonial western Kenya is examined. The responses of the British Colonial Office, the colonial state, African, European and Asian communities are also analyzed. The relationship between disease …

Re-Siting Memory: Reading Resistance Through Memorization In Three Margaret Atwood Novels., Uma Devi Palecanda K Jan 1996

Re-Siting Memory: Reading Resistance Through Memorization In Three Margaret Atwood Novels., Uma Devi Palecanda K

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In the novels Lady Oracle, The Handmaid's Tale, and Cat's Eye, I locate and name the sites of memory to show how Atwood's protagonists appropriate them as their loci of resistance. The localized sites though marginalized are within the realm of representation; however, the "space-offs," a term I borrow from film theory, are beyond "the ideological." In these sites women create and/or validate counter-discourses that enable them to set up "politics of oppositionality" and provide them with a distance necessary to question the hegemonic. The localization of the sites eventually leads to the body as site. I acknowledge the changing …

Colloidal Interactions Of Thorium, Frezewd Haile-Meskel Jan 1996

Colloidal Interactions Of Thorium, Frezewd Haile-Meskel

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Some organic and inorganic colloids have a strong affinity to bind radionuclides, and therefore, enhance their mobility. This study attempted to determine the interactions of thorium with colloidal humic acid and colloidal silica under various aqueous conditions and organic carbon from Blue point, Muddy, and Rogers Springs. A colloidal distribution study was done in spiked Lake Tahoe and Mono Lake samples. Plutonium was studied as an example for other radionuclides. Based on these studies, both thorium and plutonium were associated mostly with particles smaller than 0.45{dollar}\mu{dollar}m. Humic acid and organic carbon were found to have little influence on thorium speciation …

Potential Roles For Transforming Growth Factor-B During Terminal Differentiation Of Ocular Lens Cells /, Dawn Marie Richiert Jan 1996

Potential Roles For Transforming Growth Factor-B During Terminal Differentiation Of Ocular Lens Cells /, Dawn Marie Richiert

Wayne State University Dissertations

During terminal differentiation, lens fiber cells permanently withdraw from the cell cycle, migrate posteriorly along the lens capsule, become greatly elongated and eliminate all cellular organelles. Lens fiber differentiation may be controlled by various factors within the ocular environment. The lens capsule may influence lens fibers, since regions of the capsule differ in components and architecture. TGF-β is known as a regulator of both cell division and differentiation as well as a modulator of ECM production. Since TGF-β is found in the ocular environment and within lens cells, these functions of TGF-β in the lens were examined. In the avian …
