Timing Of First Sexual Intercourse: The Role Of Social Control, Social Learning, And Problem Behavior, Lisa J. Crockett, C. Raymond Bingham, Joanne S. Chopak, Judith R. Vicary Jan 1996

Timing Of First Sexual Intercourse: The Role Of Social Control, Social Learning, And Problem Behavior, Lisa J. Crockett, C. Raymond Bingham, Joanne S. Chopak, Judith R. Vicary

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Prior research has pointed to several distinct processes that may affect the timing of first intercourse among adolescents. In the present study, the role of six hypothesized processes was assessed in a sample of 289 rural adolescent boys and girls. Results support the importance of family socialization and problem behavior for both sexes, the role of biological factors for boys, and the role of social control processes for girls. Two other hypothesized influences--social class and poor psychosocial adjustment--were not supported in either gender. These results indicate that multiple processes influence the timing of first intercourse; thus, they underscore the need …

Evaluating Service-Learning Programs, Andrew Furco Jan 1996

Evaluating Service-Learning Programs, Andrew Furco

Evaluation/Reflection

What we know about service-learning programs regarding impacts on students, communities, institutions:
• little systematic data analysis has been done;
• most existing findings are anecdotal;
• findings that exist are narrow in scope and are typically nongeneralizeable to other programs;
• most studies on service-learning have focused on the impact of service on student (service provider) development;
• there are a growing number of service-learning evaluations that are assessing the impacts of service on communities (service recipients);
• assessments of the impacts of service-learning on institutions are negligible
• regarding impacts on students, we know that service can impact …

Latvian Agriculture After Communism: Restructuring And Privatization, Paul Robert Sando Jan 1996

Latvian Agriculture After Communism: Restructuring And Privatization, Paul Robert Sando

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study continues the investigation of Latvian agriculture begun as a Master's thesis, and documents current trends toward market driven, private agriculture in that nation. Latvia is aggressively pursuing a return to private farms and a free market as a means of addressing problems with food production and declining standards of living resulting from the collapse of collective and state farming systems. Since 1991, the changes in Latvia's agricultural system and food production have been broad based and extraordinary in their speed. With legal recognition of land ownership, peasant farms have returned as the main agricultural production unit. Agricultural organization …

Cellular Proliferation And Differentiation Factors: Stathmin And Mtj1, John Frederick Rebhun Jan 1996

Cellular Proliferation And Differentiation Factors: Stathmin And Mtj1, John Frederick Rebhun

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Stathmin is a highly conserved, soluble, cytosolic, 19 kDa protein. It is phosphorylated in response to hormones, growth and differentiation factors, and neurotransmitters. Its function is unknown. It is phosphorylated by mitogen activated protein (MAP) kinase and p34$\sp{\rm cdc2}$ kinase in vitro and these kinases are suspected to phosphorylate stathmin in vivo. MAP kinase is activated in response to extracellular signals. It phosphorylates regulatory proteins involved with the initiation of transcription and translation. p34$\sp{\rm cdc2}$ kinase is a cyclin-dependent protein kinase. Its activation is required for cellular proliferation and it phosphorylates key regulatory proteins involved with cell cycle control. Stathmin …

Effects Of Gender Role Orientation On Responses Of Counselors-In-Training, Joanne Kay Urschel Jan 1996

Effects Of Gender Role Orientation On Responses Of Counselors-In-Training, Joanne Kay Urschel

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the effects of gender-role orientation of clients and counselors-in-training, and sex of clients on response consistencies of counselors-in-training. One hundred and twelve master's level counselors-in-training from twelve universities served as participants. Each participant viewed six videotaped vignettes of clients; each representing one of six gender-role orientations. At the conclusion of each vignette the participants were asked to write a response to the question, "What would you say next to the client?" Responses were categorized into consistency scores reflecting gender-role orientations of clients and counselors-in-training, and sex of clients. As hypothesized, gender-role orientations of clients and clients' sex …

Male College Student's General Satisfaction With Different Styles Of Therapy And Different Sexed Therapists, Jeffrey S. Kline

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of therapist gender and style of therapy on the perceived satisfaction of the therapist. Through an experimental analogue design, the subjects were presented with one of four different video vignettes of a therapy session between a male college student and a therapist. The videos differentiated along two dimensions: therapist gender, and the style of therapy. The dependent variable was a rating of general satisfaction with the therapist in the video vignette as measured by the total score on the Counselor Rating Form--Short (CRF-S). In order to strengthen the overall statistical …

Art Speech, Marci A. Hamilton Jan 1996

Art Speech, Marci A. Hamilton

Vanderbilt Law Review

Although many scholars have been in favor of providing first amendment protection for art, no one has offered a justification for its constitutional protection suited to art's singular capacities. Rather, commentators and courts have been inclined to place art under the rubric of general speech, which limits protection to ideas and content. Professor Hamilton argues that art offers significantly more than its content and deserves first amendment protection tailored to its particular potential. Art enables individuals to experience unfamiliar worlds and thereby to gain new perspectives on the prevailing status quo, including the government's. It performs this function without exposing …

Scenery As Policy: Public Involvement In Developing A Management Plan For The Scenic Resources Of The Columbia River Gorge, Gordon Mathews Euler Jan 1996

Scenery As Policy: Public Involvement In Developing A Management Plan For The Scenic Resources Of The Columbia River Gorge, Gordon Mathews Euler

Dissertations and Theses

The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area (NSA) was created in 1986 in response to a growing interest in preserving the scenic beauty of the gorge. The creation of the NSA and other areas around the country with a scenic resource emphasis indicates a growing interest in protecting landscapes with diverse scenic qualities that are not showcase areas such as the Grand Canyon and Yosemite. NSA mandates included the protection and enhancement of scenic, natural, cultural, and recreational resources (SNCRs) as the primary concern in the consideration of new land uses. The NSA management plan contains a complex mix of …

Exploring The Human Frontier, Kevin Olsson

Theses

The primary purpose of the study is to explain using text and illustration the sexual differentiation and development of the human embryo. The thesis will explain in detail known aspects of crucial and intermediate events that occur during the development of an indifferent human embryo to a sixteen week male fetus. Specific attention will be given to molecular events that occur at week seven and the results of those processes on a gross level. It is the aim of this thesis to define and address all known and relevant aspects in a manner that enables the most complicated events to …

Monte Carlo Experiments And The Defense Of Diffusion Models In Molecular Population Genetics, Michael Dietrich Jan 1996

Monte Carlo Experiments And The Defense Of Diffusion Models In Molecular Population Genetics, Michael Dietrich

Dartmouth Scholarship

In the 1960s molecular population geneticists used Monte Carlo experiments to evaluate particular diffusion equation models. In this paper I examine the nature of this comparative evaluation and argue for three claims: first, Monte Carlo experiments are genuine experiments: second, Monte Carlo experiments can provide an important means for evaluating the adequacy of highly idealized theoretical models; and, third, the evaluation of the computational adequacy of a diffusion model with Monte Carlo experiments is significantly different from the evaluation of the empirical adequacy of the same diffusion model.

Where Have All The Ideophones Gone? The Death Of A Word Category In Zulu, George Tucker Childs Jan 1996

Where Have All The Ideophones Gone? The Death Of A Word Category In Zulu, George Tucker Childs

Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The first step in the discussion is to demonstrate that ideophones constitute a word class, a relatively uncontroversial claim for Southern Bantu. The second is to show that native speakers of Zulu do not share equal knowledge of ideophones and how this knowledge correlates with social factors. Measured knowledge of ideophones is evaluated against the social factors of age, sex, education, residence patterns, and rusticity, a parameter to be elaborated below. The conclusion is that just as for pidgins and creoles (Childs 1994) the knowledge and use of ideophones serves as a reliable barometer for language typing and language change, …

Global Optimization Studies On The 1-D Phase Problem, Martin Zwick, Byrne Elliot Lovell, Jim Marsh Jan 1996

Global Optimization Studies On The 1-D Phase Problem, Martin Zwick, Byrne Elliot Lovell, Jim Marsh

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Simulated Annealing (SA), two techniques for global optimization, were applied to a reduced (simplified) form of the phase problem (RPP) in computational crystallography. Results were compared with those of "enhanced pair flipping" (EPF), a more elaborate problem-specific algorithm incorporating local and global searches. Not surprisingly, EPF did better than the GA or SA approaches, but the existence of GA and SA techniques more advanced than those used in this study suggest that these techniques still hold promise for phase problem applications. The RPP is, furthermore, an excellent test problem for such global optimization methods.
