Flow Injection Chemistries For The In Situ Monitoring Of Nutrients In Sea Water, Trevor Mccormack
Flow Injection Chemistries For The In Situ Monitoring Of Nutrients In Sea Water, Trevor Mccormack
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
In order to investigate the biogeochemistry of aquatic ecosystems, a quantitative knowledge of nutrient status i.e. spatial and temporal distribution, and primary production is necessary. This thesis describes chemistries for the determination of the major nutrient species, nitrate (as total oxidised nitrogen minus nitrite) and phosphate (as orthophosphate) using Flow Injection (FI) analysis. Chapter One describes the role of nitrogen and phosphorus in the aquatic environment and overviews laboratory and in situ methods for their determination. Chapter Two describes the development and optimisation of an FI method for the determination of nitrate in natural waters of varying salinity (0-3 5 …

Slurry, Solution And Speciation Analysis By Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry, Karen Lorraine O'Hanlon
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry has been investigated for solution, slurry and speciation analysis. It has been shown that it is possible to optimise a simultaneous multielement analysis for slurry and solution samples using solid state detection and optimisation algorithms. A range of certified reference materials have been analysed using optimum conditions and results were in good agreement with certified values. Slurry nebulisation has been used for the first time in the analysis of NIST SRM Total Diet' and carbon black samples. Both radially and axially viewed ICP spectrometers were used in these studies. Modifications of the mass transport …

Enhanced Oil Degradation By Bacteria When Immobilized To An Oleophilic Substratum, Nicola Gail Wilson
Enhanced Oil Degradation By Bacteria When Immobilized To An Oleophilic Substratum, Nicola Gail Wilson
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Three immobilization matrices, Biofix (kaolinite microspheres), Drizit (polypropylene fibres) and polyester polyurethane were used as substrata for use in bioremediation. Enhanced biodegradation of petrol (Slovene diesel) and Ekofisk crude oil occurred with immobilization of Pseudomonas fluorescens to Biofix and Drizit in freshwater and saltwater systems. When compared to free bacteria, immobilization resulted in; increased growth, accelerated ability of the cells to utilize oil, and enhanced biodegradation as determined by gas chromatography. In the freshwater systems Drizit immobilized cells reduced the lag phase to one day in comparison to six in a free system and increased biodegradation of the n-alkanes by …

Applications Of Iontophoresis And Phonophoresis, Craig Hahn
Applications Of Iontophoresis And Phonophoresis, Craig Hahn
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Many different drugs are used topically for treatment by the medical field. The benefit of some of these drugs can be enhanced by the use of ultrasound (phonophoresis) or electric current (iontophoresis). These methods have been used for many years by such disciplines as ophthalmology, dermatology, dentistry as well as physical therapy. With the inherent risks of blood borne pathogens, these methods are a great alternative to the injection of drugs into the system.
The purpose of this paper is to review the literature regarding iontophoresis and phonophoresis and present the results as a guide for the practicing physical therapist. …
An Overview In The Ergonomics Of An Office Computer Workstation, James H. Matetich
An Overview In The Ergonomics Of An Office Computer Workstation, James H. Matetich
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Ergonomics is an applied science concerned with adapting a workplace environment to match the capabilities of a worker and ensure the worker's safety. The study of ergonomics is one of increasing interest to American business. Specifically, the ergonomics of the office computer workstation has come under growing scrutiny due to a tremendous rise in the reported incidence of work related injuries. Workers, in this work environment, appear to be at a greater risk of injuries to the back, neck, shoulder, forearm, wrist, hand, and leg. These injuries, classified as cumulative trauma disorders or CTDs, can be attributed to ergonomic hazards …
Polypharmacy And Physical Therapy In The Geriatric Population, Cathy A. Reuer
Polypharmacy And Physical Therapy In The Geriatric Population, Cathy A. Reuer
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Physical therapists are seeing more and more elderly individuals with acute, chronic, or multiple disease conditions. Many of these conditions are treated with medications. It is common for the geriatric patient to be taking multiple medications. Polypharmacy is a relevant concern for physical therapists as adverse effects are often revealed in the musculoskeletal and central nervous systems. These manifestations can cause adverse effects in evaluation, treatment, and outcomes.
The purpose of this study is to discuss the common non-prescription and prescription medications consumed by the elderly, describe the biologic and physiologic changes that occur with age and how these changes …

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome: Physical Therapy Implications And Treatment Strategies, Mary L. Emerson
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) describes physical and neurological (motor, cognitive, and behavioral) deficits that result from maternal alcohol intake during pregnancy. FAS is the leading cause of mental retardation and birth defects in the U.S., ahead of spina bifida, fragile X syndrome, and down's syndrome. The incidence of FAS increased more than three-fold from 1979 to 1992; this increasing incidence rate, enhances the importance of the Physical Therapists' role in early recognition and intervention of FAS. A review of current F AS research studies, reveals a need for additional resource information on FAS, regarding implications for Physical Therapy and possible …
The Use Of Ergogenic Aids In Athletes, Sheri L. Mounteer
The Use Of Ergogenic Aids In Athletes, Sheri L. Mounteer
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Ergogenic aids are substances purported to enhance athletic performance or improve exercise capacity. The use of ergogenic aids in sports is very widespread. It is common for a physical therapist working in a sports clinic to have patients that are either considering using or using ergogenic aids. Use of these aids by patients being treated might affect the patients' response to treatment. Therapists should be able to recognize the signs of ergogenic aid abuse in individuals under their care, and they should be aware of the side effects of these aids. It is also important for therapists to be able …
Balance Exercise For Fall Prevention In The Elderly, Lorrina Mcclellan
Balance Exercise For Fall Prevention In The Elderly, Lorrina Mcclellan
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Falls are a very common and serious problem in the elderly population. Individuals who fall may suffer from physical trauma, psychological problems, and possible death. In the past, falls were thought to be an unavoidable occurrence that accompanied aging. Research has .recently identified risk factors that may predict those who are at risk for falling. By recognizing and then modifying these risk factors, potential falls may be prevented. Examples of risk factors that occur with aging include visual impairments, vestibular decline, deterioration of muscle strength, decrease in joint flexibility, and the loss of sensation. Natural biological declines may have profound …
The Effects Of Botulinum Toxin Injections On Function In Patients With Spasticity, Leann Pippen
The Effects Of Botulinum Toxin Injections On Function In Patients With Spasticity, Leann Pippen
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Spasticity can be one of the most challenging problems for patients with neurologic conditions such as cerebral palsy, spinal cord injuries, cerebrovascular accidents, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injuries, etc. It can lead to a wide variety of problems including decreased mobility, decreased quality of movement, interference with normal postural reactions, interference with functional activities, and pressure sores. Therefore, the medical community has focused on effective treatments for spasticity which do not produce overwhelming weakness, spasticity, paralysis, fatigue, and/or muscle atrophy. Since the late 1970's, the use of botulinum toxin (BTX-A) injections to decrease spasticity has been investigated.
The purpose of …
Meniscal Substitution: A Literature Review, Kerry L. Muir
Meniscal Substitution: A Literature Review, Kerry L. Muir
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
With the increased awareness that meniscectomy results in degenerative changes in the knee joint, research is now aimed at substituting the meniscus that had been previously removed. Surgical attempts at replacing the meniscus include the use of autografts, allografts, and artificial synthetic prosthesis.
This paper will review the available literature regarding each type of meniscal substitute. Surgical procedures, results, and considerations relating to the different substitutes will be examined.
While studies indicate that meniscal transplantation is technically feasible, the long-term results are unknown. More research is necessary to determine if meniscal substitutes can survive for a prolonged time and function …

Nuclear Weapons And The Laws Of War: Does Customary International Law Prohibit The Use Of Nuclear Weapons In All Circumstances?, Jill M. Sheldon
Fordham International Law Journal
This Note argues that customary international law does not prohibit the use of nuclear weapons in self-defense. Part I describes the characteristics of nuclear weapons, including their destructive capabilities and health effects. Part I also discusses the development of the laws of war and the process by which a generally accepted principle or practice ascends to customary international law. Further, Part I presents existing treaties concerning non-proliferation and other nuclear weapons-related issues. Part II examines the application of the laws of war to nuclear weapons use and the resulting conflict over the legality of the use of nuclear weapons. Part …

A Study Of The Omega Equation For Diagnosing Vertical Motions At Ocean Fronts, Jean-Michel Pinot, Joaquin Tintoré, Dong-Ping Wang
Journal of Marine Research
Estimation of vertical velocity is a key issue for understanding ocean physics and transport of biogeochemical tracers. We examine the accuracy of estimating vertical velocity in fronts with the omega equation. The diagnostic performance of the omega equation is evaluated by using vertical velocities obtained from simulation of frontal instabilities in a primitive equation model as a reference. We use two traditional quasigeostrophic methods in which the flow is either a geostrophic flow computed from density or a nondivergent flow derived from vorticity and also test two new formulations: a quasigeostrophic method using the total flow field and the semigeostrophic …

Application Of A Barotropic Model To North Atlantic Synoptic Sea Level Variability, Richard J. Greatbatch, Youyu Lu, Brad De Young
Application Of A Barotropic Model To North Atlantic Synoptic Sea Level Variability, Richard J. Greatbatch, Youyu Lu, Brad De Young
Journal of Marine Research
A barotropic, shallow-water model of the North Atlantic is used to investigate variability in adjusted sea level on time scales of a few days to a few months (by “adjusted,” we mean that the inverse barometer is removed from both the model-computed sea level and the observations). The model has 1/3° × 0.4° resolution in latitude and longitude, respectively, and is forced using atmospheric pressure and wind stress data derived from European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF, 1994) analyses. The model results are compared with coastal tide gauge data. Along the western boundary, from St. John's, Newfoundland, to …

Toward A Pragmatic Model Of Judicial Decisionmaking: Why Tort Law Provides A Better Framework Than Constitutional Law For Deciding The Issue Of Medical Futility, Brent D. Lloyd
Seattle University Law Review
Recognizing that courts will eventually have to confront the issue of medical futility, this Comment argues that there is no principled basis for omitting these difficult questions from a legal analysis of the issue and that courts should therefore decide the issue in a manner that honestly confronts them. Specifically, the argument advanced here is that courts confronted with cases of medical futility should decide the issue under principles of tort law, rather than under principles of constitutional law. The crux of this argument is that tort principles provide an open-ended analytical framework conducive to considering troublesome questions like those …

Searching For The (M)Other: The Rhetoric Of Longing In Post-Holocaust Poems By Nelly Sachs And Rose Ausländer, Kathrin M. Bower
Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications
The post-Holocaust poems of Nelly Sachs and Rose Ausländer demonstrate shifts toward experimentation in form and message, particularly in relation to religious belief and the expressive potential of poetic language. The experience of the Holocaust forced both authors to confront the interconnections between their Jewishness, their relationship to the German language, and their displacements as homeless exiles. They turned to poetry as a means of mediating the past in the present, and their post-Holocaust writings represent acts of both remembrance and reproduction. As victims and witnesses to suffering, devastation, and loss, Sachs and Ausländer appealed to images of the maternal …

Feminism For Men: Legal Ideology And The Construction Of Maleness, Nancy Levit
Feminism For Men: Legal Ideology And The Construction Of Maleness, Nancy Levit
Faculty Works
It may seem a little odd to suggest that feminist theory has overlooked men. Yet, in several important respects, apart from the role of culprit, men have been largely omitted from feminism. Feminist legal theorists have paid mild attention to the "Can men be feminists?" question but this issue is usually relegated to footnotes. The negative effect gender role stereotypes have on men is typically subsidiary to the main focus of feminist legal literature, which has concentrated on documenting the patterns of subordination of women and on questions of feminist ideology.
The primary purpose of this article is to suggest …
