The Contradictions Of Change: The Relative Status Of Women In The Work Force After The, Alicia Smith '96 Jan 1996

The Contradictions Of Change: The Relative Status Of Women In The Work Force After The, Alicia Smith '96

Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research

The fall of communism in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union marked the end of an era in which official ideology and state policy often masked the reality of citizens' lives. This contradiction was particularly acute for women, a group that the Soviet model of communism was intended to emancipate (Basu, 1995; Bystydzienski, 1992; Corrin, 1992; Einhorn, 1993; Millarand and Wolchik, 1994; Nelson and Chowdhury, 1994; Rueshchemeyer, 1994). Under the guise of Marxist-Leninist ideology, women were accorded an equal right to work and to participate in the building of socialism. The Soviet model, which was imposed to a greater …

Two 'Cop-Outs' In Faith-Learning Integration: Incarnational Integration And Worldviewish Integration, Ken Badley Jan 1996

Two 'Cop-Outs' In Faith-Learning Integration: Incarnational Integration And Worldviewish Integration, Ken Badley

Faculty Publications - College of Education

There are at least six different approaches to integration adopted by educationalists in recent years. These interconnect and may partially overlap. Two kinds of confusion in talk of integration are identified, along with four other substantive questions that would-be faith-learning, integrationists need to address. Neither incarnational integration nor perspectival integration are adequate on their own. Evangelical and Reformed traditions are both at their best when they combine incarnational and perspectival in their efforts to integrate faith and learning.

A Pcr Assay For The Detection Of Wuchereria Bancrofti In Blood, Min Zhong, James Mccarthy, Lou Ann Bierwert, Michelle Lizotte-Waniewski, Suzanne Chanteau, Thomas Nutman, Eric A. Ottesen, Steven A. Williams Jan 1996

A Pcr Assay For The Detection Of Wuchereria Bancrofti In Blood, Min Zhong, James Mccarthy, Lou Ann Bierwert, Michelle Lizotte-Waniewski, Suzanne Chanteau, Thomas Nutman, Eric A. Ottesen, Steven A. Williams

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

To identify Wuchereria bancrofti DNA sequences that could be used as the basis for a simple and rapid parasite detection assay, a genomic library of W. bancrofti was constructed and screened for highly repeated DNA. The repeat found with the highest copy number was 195 basepairs (bps) long, 77% AT, and 300 copies per haploid genome. This sequence was designated the Ssp I repeat because it has a unique recognition site for that restriction endonuclease in all or most of the repeat copies. The Ssp I repeat DNA family is dispersed, genus-specific, and exists in all of the different geographic …

Attributions Of Negative Partner Behaviour By Men Who Physically Abuse Their Partners, Santina Tonizzo Jan 1996

Attributions Of Negative Partner Behaviour By Men Who Physically Abuse Their Partners, Santina Tonizzo

Theses : Honours

Conflict in close relationships is associated with specific patterns of attributions (Bradbury & Fincham 1990). The objective of this study was to investigate If violence would be associated with particular type of attributions made for negative partner behaviours. Three groups of men were classified using the Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS; Straus, 1979) as physically violent (in Domestic Violence Intervention Progams), (n = 19), non-physically violent in (counselling), ( n = 17), and non-physically violent in the (community), (n = 31 ). The Relationship Attribution Measure (RAM) by Fincham & Bradbury, ( 1992) was used to assess the attributional dependent variables …

Analytical Perspectives On A Protohistoric Cache Of Ceramic Jars From The Lower Colorado Desert, James Bayman, Richard Hevly, Boma Johnson, Karl J. Reinhard, Richard Ryan Jan 1996

Analytical Perspectives On A Protohistoric Cache Of Ceramic Jars From The Lower Colorado Desert, James Bayman, Richard Hevly, Boma Johnson, Karl J. Reinhard, Richard Ryan

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

A cache of hermetically sealed ceramic jars found in the Lower Colorado Desert was examined using chronometric dating, pollen and macrofossil extraction, design analysis, and water retention experimentation. The cache apparently dates to the protohistoric fifteenth through seventeenth centuries. Findings from these studies contribute to knowledge in four problem areas: (1) ceramic jar function and use-history; (2) storage technology and caching behavior; (3) ceramic dating and chronology; and (4) symbolic iconography. Biotic remains from inside the jars document their use for transporting a variety of riverine and desert plants, before they were finally filled with flowers and seeds, and placed …

Costs And Benefits Of Monogamy And Polygyny For Yanomamö Women, Raymond B. Hames Jan 1996

Costs And Benefits Of Monogamy And Polygyny For Yanomamö Women, Raymond B. Hames

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

In this paper I analyze some of the economic costs and benefits of monogamy and polygyny for Yanomamö women. The evolutionary ecological model of resource defense polygyny predicts that when female choice is operative females will choose those males who control resources that will maximize a female’s reproductive success. A female will choose a polygynous strategy (i.e., become a co-wife) if a currently married male has more resources to offer than other unmarried males or monogamous males. This model has been successfully used to predict polygynous mating in tribal societies where males are stratified in terms of their ownership or …

While Ignorance May Not Be Bliss, It Is A Mother's Right: Constitutional Implications Of Testing Newborn Babies For Hiv, Julie D. Levinson Jan 1996

While Ignorance May Not Be Bliss, It Is A Mother's Right: Constitutional Implications Of Testing Newborn Babies For Hiv, Julie D. Levinson

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article examines the constitutional implications of mandatory HIV testing for newborns, arguing that such policies infringe upon women's rights under the Fourteenth Amendment. It critiques two proposed bills for being overly intrusive and not narrowly tailored, advocating instead for voluntary testing and counseling to balance public health with individual rights.

A Different Approach To Jurisprudence? Feminisms In German Legal Science, Legal Cultures, And The Ambivalence Of Law, Susanne Baer Jan 1996

A Different Approach To Jurisprudence? Feminisms In German Legal Science, Legal Cultures, And The Ambivalence Of Law, Susanne Baer

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The integration of feminist theories into legal science and education faces significant challenges, particularly in Germany, where institutional and cultural barriers have slowed progress compared to other countries like Norway, Denmark, and the U.S. While feminist approaches have made inroads elsewhere, Germany remains hesitant, with the question of whether feminism belongs in legal education still unanswered. The tension between feminist perspectives and traditional legal methodologies, coupled with structural academia challenges, underscores the difficulty of achieving meaningful integration.

On The History Of Fathers' Rights And Mothers' Duty Of Care, Sibylla Flügge Jan 1996

On The History Of Fathers' Rights And Mothers' Duty Of Care, Sibylla Flügge

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article examines the historical evolution of custody rights in Germany, focusing on the shift from maternal preference to increasing recognition of fathers' rights. It argues that the legal system's move toward joint custody and equal parental rights reflects broader societal changes in gender roles, while also critiquing the potential backlash against women's emancipation. The analysis highlights how improvements in fathers' legal standing have often coincided with decreased obligations for men to actively care for children, raising concerns about the practical implications for mothers and children.

Characterization Of Ground And Excited Electronic State Deprotonation Energies Of Systems Containing Double Bonds Using Natural Bond Orbital Analysis, J. K. Badenhoop, Steve Scheiner Jan 1996

Characterization Of Ground And Excited Electronic State Deprotonation Energies Of Systems Containing Double Bonds Using Natural Bond Orbital Analysis, J. K. Badenhoop, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Natural bond orbital analysis is applied to the ground and excited states of a set of neutral, cationic, and anionic doubly bonded species HnC=XHn (X=C, N, O) isoelectronic with ethylene. The character of the excitation is correlated with calculated charge shifts and geometry changes upon relaxation. For these planar molecules, depopulation of the π bond or population of the π∗ antibond causes an out‐of‐plane twist or pyramidalization upon relaxation correlated to the amount of charge shift. These nonplanar distortions generally lower the energy more than changes in bond lengths and angles. Population of a σXH∗ …

Looking For A Nonlegal Process: Physician-Assisted Suicide And The Care Perspective, Paul J. Zwier Jan 1996

Looking For A Nonlegal Process: Physician-Assisted Suicide And The Care Perspective, Paul J. Zwier

University of Richmond Law Review

One of the many benefits of an interdisciplinary seminar like the Allen Chair-sponsored Bioethics seminar held at the University of Richmond Law School in 1995 was that members of the seminar had the opportunity to study the effects of the legal system's attempt to regulate bioethical issues. No question proved more troubling for the seminar than the question of physician-assisted suicide. Seminar participants, both members of the class and speakers, divided deeply on the legality of physician-assisted suicide, and for good reason. The discussions started with court decisions that were found to be both divisive and unsatisfactory. A number of …

Public Research And Private Development: Patents And Technology Transfer In Government-Sponsored Research, Rebecca S. Eisenberg Jan 1996

Public Research And Private Development: Patents And Technology Transfer In Government-Sponsored Research, Rebecca S. Eisenberg

Articles

This article revisits the logical and empirical basis for current government patent policy in order to shed light on the competing interests at stake and to begin to assess how the system is operating in practice. Such an inquiry is justified in part by the significance of federally-sponsored research and development to the overall U.S. research effort. Although the share of national expenditures for research and development borne by the federal government has declined since 1980, federal funding in 1995 still accounted for approximately thirty-six percent of total national outlays for research and development' and nearly fifty-eight percent of outlays …
