Faculty Works

It may seem a little odd to suggest that feminist theory has overlooked men. Yet, in several important respects, apart from the role of culprit, men have been largely omitted from feminism. Feminist legal theorists have paid mild attention to the "Can men be feminists?" question but this issue is usually relegated to footnotes. The negative effect gender role stereotypes have on men is typically subsidiary to the main focus of feminist legal literature, which has concentrated on documenting the patterns of subordination of women and on questions of feminist ideology.

The primary purpose of this article is to suggest …

Corporate Ethics, Elizabeth Milligan Jan 1996

Corporate Ethics, Elizabeth Milligan

Honors Theses

This paper explores leadership, social responsibility and business ethics. Business ethics have become a contradiction of terms due to the lack of accountability inherent in corporate structure. An exploration of ethical theory is an attempt to demonstrate that corporations can be seen as leaders. If a corporation can be an actor and a leader it can be held morally accountable for the changes that it makes on the environment and society.

Corporations make decisions, influence society, structure jobs, produce, innovate and change. Corporations act as leaders. As a leader it is essential that a corporation be socially responsible. The individuals …

The Independent Counsel Statute: Bad Law, Bad Policy, Julie R. O'Sullivan Jan 1996

The Independent Counsel Statute: Bad Law, Bad Policy, Julie R. O'Sullivan

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The Watergate scandal-and the crisis in public confidence in government it spawned-left us many legacies, one of which is the Independent Counsel ("IC") statute. Over twenty years after the fact, the "lessons" of the scandal itself continue to be the dominant reference. It is time to evaluate the "lessons" of Watergate's legacies and, in particular, the IC mechanism.

Controlling Corruption Through Collective Means: Advocating The Inter-American Convention Against Corruption, Robert H. Sutton Jan 1996

Controlling Corruption Through Collective Means: Advocating The Inter-American Convention Against Corruption, Robert H. Sutton

Fordham International Law Journal

This Note argues that the Convention offers the most effective approach to combating corruption and that all states should sign and ratify it. Part I discusses corruption, explains its history and its harmful effects, and describes international organizations whose purposes and principles are directly opposed to the harm corruption is capable of perpetrating. Part II presents existing approaches to combating corruption. Part III argues that all states should adopt the OAS approach. This Note concludes that states can best combat corruption through the OAS approach because it offers the most comprehensive and, therefore, the most effective of the existing solutions.

An Examination Of The Socio-Economic Determinants Of Punishment Using Abductive Polynomial Networks, Farrukh Behzad Hakeem Jan 1996

An Examination Of The Socio-Economic Determinants Of Punishment Using Abductive Polynomial Networks, Farrukh Behzad Hakeem

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The purpose of this research is to examine aspects of the relationship between socio-economic conditions and imprisonment in a particular historical setting. Previous research suggests that this relationship is problematic and situationally variable. The approach taken in this dissertation reflects a belief that earlier studies can be faulted for their failure to take account of the fiscal climate of the state as an influence on the size of prison populations.

This analysis will employ the Marxist model, as developed by Rusche and Kirchheimer (1939) and widely applied (though with mixed results) in research conducted over the last half-century. This model …
