Justice, Citizenship, Social Cohesion And The Commons, Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
There is great ferment in political and social theory today due to a number of major changes are taking place in the larger social world and our understandings of it including the crisis of the welfare state; the emergence of more open societies in Russia, Central Europe, Latin America and many of the countries of the Pacific Rim; general movement away from class/stratification and toward group membership as central themes for national politics in many countries; a major crisis of the modernization paradigm; the emergence of a truly-global economy; and the emergence of the internet as a global communications medium. …

A Historical Research Study Of The Evolution Of Attention Deficit Disorder, Eleonora R. Posner
A Historical Research Study Of The Evolution Of Attention Deficit Disorder, Eleonora R. Posner
Theses and Graduate Projects
Across the United States of America, schools and social service agencies have become increasingly aware of a disability called Attention Deficit Disorder (A.D.D.). Families and employers are learning the name for this confusing, frustration, seemingly uncontrolled problem. The focus of this thesis will be to trace the origin and historical development of this disorder. It examines the work of those who were involved in identifying, defining and treating the disorder. The author has attempted to draw connections between history, discovery, research and implications for treatment, practice and public policy.

Naming And Framing Service Learning: A Taxonomy And Four Levels Of Value, James Robertson Price Iii, John S. Martello
Naming And Framing Service Learning: A Taxonomy And Four Levels Of Value, James Robertson Price Iii, John S. Martello
Higher Education
Service learning draws upon some of the noblest intentions of American higher education: its goal is to develop an educated and engaged citizenry willing and able to address society's ills. This idea of service learning resonates deeply with the felt needs of our time, and perhaps nowhere more keenly than in the urban locations of metropolitan colleges and universities. Consequently, service learning is perhaps the fastest growing and the most promising movement within higher education today.

Education, Assets, And Intergenerational Well-Being: The Case Of Female Headed Families, Li-Chen Cheng, Deborah Page-Adams
Education, Assets, And Intergenerational Well-Being: The Case Of Female Headed Families, Li-Chen Cheng, Deborah Page-Adams
Center for Social Development Research
This paper reports findings from an analysis of economic well-being among female headed households. Previous theoretical and empirical work in this area suggests that poverty among female headed families is to some extent an intergenerational process, a vicious cycle. One common explanation for this pattern is that low socioeconomic status in a woman’s family of origin results in low educational attainment and, ultimately, in low earning capacity. However, an exclusive focus on education may overlook the long term dynamics of the household as an institution that can accumulate assets to enhance economic well-being across generations. Using data from the National …
What We Know About Effects Of Asset Holding: Implications For Research On Asset-Based Anti-Poverty Initiatives, Deborah Page-Adams, Michael Sherraden
What We Know About Effects Of Asset Holding: Implications For Research On Asset-Based Anti-Poverty Initiatives, Deborah Page-Adams, Michael Sherraden
Center for Social Development Research
Asset accumulation programs have emerged at local and state levels to help poor people save for purposes such as education, homeowership, and microenterprise development. These anti-poverty programs are built in part on the suggestion that assets have a wide range of positive effects on well-being, and they frequently use a system of Individual Development Accounts (IDAs) to structure asset accumulation. In addition, federal legislation for an IDA demonstration has increasing support. The emergence of asset accumulation programs at local and state levels, along with growing bipartisan support for a national IDA demonstration, makes applied research both possible and necessary. Studies …
A Survey Of The Special Learner Training Of Music Educators In Ohio, Dorianne J. Nicholson
A Survey Of The Special Learner Training Of Music Educators In Ohio, Dorianne J. Nicholson
Masters Theses
Music educators from the Ohio Music Educators' Association were surveyed to investigate the special learner training received in undergraduate and graduate programs. The survey was designed to provide demographic data and information about course settings for special learner training, observations, "hands-on" experiences, topics covered in both undergraduate and graduate courses, and the need for additional training.
Of the 200 surveys sent to Ohio music educators, 83 usable responses were returned. Twenty-four percent (n=19) of the respondents reported having special learner training in their undergraduate programs. Of these 19, 42% were required to participate in observations, and 24% were required to …

Consensus Decision Making Of Quality Improvement Teams: A Descriptive Study, Ginger L. Riffel
Consensus Decision Making Of Quality Improvement Teams: A Descriptive Study, Ginger L. Riffel
Student Work
This thesis reports on consensus decision making of quality improvement teams in the organizational setting. Specifically the study sought to determine whether a previously developed consensus instrument was a reliable and utilitarian measure of consensus. Analysis showed that the instrument was reliable, alpha = .9729, but its usefulness remains in question. Additionally, other research questions addressed the relationship between external expert stakeholders' assessments of effectiveness and team members' assessments as measured by the instrument. Analyses showed only minimal relationship. As an unanticipated result in three tests, a negative relationship was found between one rater's rankings and a groups' consensus levels …
