An Analysis Of Iodine Deficiency Disorder And Eradication Strategies In The High Atlas Mountains Of Morocco, Elizabeth Anne Oldham, Christopher B. Barrett, Sabah Benjelloun, Brahim Ahanou
An Analysis Of Iodine Deficiency Disorder And Eradication Strategies In The High Atlas Mountains Of Morocco, Elizabeth Anne Oldham, Christopher B. Barrett, Sabah Benjelloun, Brahim Ahanou
Economic Research Institute Study Papers
The population of the Ounein Valley in the High Atlas Mountains in Morocco is at high risk of iodine deficiency. We investigated local children's iodine deficiency and goiterpattems as well as food consumption habits through a household survey. Median urinary iodine content and goiter analysis both reflect moderate iodine deficiency. Total fish consumption has a statistically significant, positive effect on urinary iodine content. Fish consumption, like that of salt, is closely related to market access. Respondents are uniformly unaware of the dietary etiology of goiter. An effective strategy to reduce the high incidence of iodine deficiency disorder among children in …

Hozho Nahasdlii--We Are Now In Good Relations: Navajo Restorative Justice, Robert Yazzie
Hozho Nahasdlii--We Are Now In Good Relations: Navajo Restorative Justice, Robert Yazzie
St. Thomas Law Review
Having illustrated American adjudication in a Western-style police model of justice, this essay will focus on Navajo justice concepts. It will show why, aside from the breakdown of police and social-work models within the Western-styled justice system, many Navajos prefer their traditional system of justice. As will be shown, the Navajo system of justice is based upon discussion, consensus, relative need, and healing. It is "restorative justice," which puts people in good relations with each other, and in continuing relationships. The Navajo system is "horizontal" or egalitarian law. It is illustrated as a circle where everyone is equal. In contrast, …

Anger And Violence In Elementary Schools: Conflict Resolution As A Method Of Prevention, Janae A. Griffith
Graduate Research Papers
One of the most significant problems facing our country is violent crime. In the last few years, violent crime by children and adolescents rose dramatically (Wilde, 1995). "Currently more than half of all serious crimes ( e.g. murder, rape, assault, robbery) in the United States are committed by youths age 10-1 7" (Shulman, 1996, p. 170). Newscasts and daily newspapers are full of reports regarding youth violence.

Commercialising Government : A Challenging Agenda, John Dixon
Commercialising Government : A Challenging Agenda, John Dixon
Centre for Public Policy Studies : CPPS Working Paper Series
Commercialisation is the product of a government deciding to address the perceived inadequate performance of public agencies by forcing civil servants to pursue a results-oriented approach to their management using business principles and practices. Its implementation brings into focus a variety of policy issues that governments must address. Moreover, effective commercialisation of a public agency requires the adoption of a commercial framework that then sets the context for the necessary structural, cultural and procedural changes. To implement such changes requires on-going political commitment and adroit senior executive civil servants. Effective commercialisation is, above all, the outcome of an incremental organisational …

Effectiveness Of Behavioral Programming And The Traumatic Brain Injury Waiver Program: A Caregiver's Perspective., Wendy S. Walker
Theses and Graduate Projects
The purpose of this exploratory study is to determine the effectiveness of behavioral services offered to adults, ages sixteen to sixty-five, through the Traumatic Brain lnjury Waiver Program (TBIW). This community-based program provides the level of behavioral services previously only available to institutionalized individuals. 2l identified primary caregivers were sent a questionnaire consisting of qualitative ond quantitative questions to assess their perceptions and understanding of the services provided. Discussion focuses on a comparison of the research findings in relation to existing literature. Implications for the social work practice include the need for ongoing education and community support for individuals with …
