Constructing A Clinic, Philip G. Schrag
Constructing A Clinic, Philip G. Schrag
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
The author addresses some basic structural questions that the clinic's supervisor or supervisors might think about when beginning to design or renovate a program. These include the goals of the proposed clinic; the number and qualifications of its teaching and support staff; the desired relationships among staff members; the subject matter of the clinic's cases; the duration of the clinic, the amount of course credit that students should receive for taking it, and the caseload per student; the grading system; the relationships between the students and the tribunals or other fora in which they will be practicing; how the clinic …

Views From The Front: A Dialog About The Corporate Law Firm, S. Elizabeth Wilborn, Ronald J. Krotoszynski, Jr.
Utah Law Review
Having spent a few years in the trenches at a major corporate law firm, and, throwing caution to the wind, we decided to pursue a somewhat novel idea: a fictionalized discussion about the state of the corporate law firm between two ideological icons-Karl Marx and Betty Friedan. The increasing clamor of associate dissatisfaction at corporate law firms requires that these institutions consider the desirability of fundamental, transformational reform in order to create a more user-friendly atmosphere for associates, partners, and long-suffering support staff. In short, revolution-and who better to sow the seeds of revolution than Karl Marx and Betty Friedan? …

Lawyering In Canada In The 21st Century, Harry W. Arthurs
Lawyering In Canada In The 21st Century, Harry W. Arthurs
Articles & Book Chapters
Legal practise is shaped by its social, political and economic environment. Canada's "new economy" of decreasing state regulation, globalization, computerization and changes in information technology, and the shift from manufacturing to the service sector has grave - largely negative - implications for the future of law and lawyers. Moreover, the profession is fragmented and stratified. It comprises multiple constituencies - solo practitioners, large corporate firms and specialists - with differing demographies and professional roles, which are implicated in varying degrees in the "new economy". As a result, they experience the restructuring of professional knowledge, governance, ethics and culture in ways …

What's Sex Got To Do With It? Challenges For Incorporating Sexuality Into Family Planning Programs, Kirsten Moore, Judith F. Helzner
What's Sex Got To Do With It? Challenges For Incorporating Sexuality Into Family Planning Programs, Kirsten Moore, Judith F. Helzner
Reproductive Health
In February 1996, IPPF/WHR and the Population Council’s Ebert Program on Critical Issues in Reproductive Health jointly hosted a meeting on the challenge of incorporating sexuality into family planning. This report was compiled after organizers concluded that the ideas and strategies presented during the meeting merited wider recognition and debate within the family planning field. The meeting examined five myths that have prevented family planning and reproductive health services from dealing directly with issues of sexuality and gender. The report draws principally on the discussions from the meeting as well as on the perspectives of the organizers. The authors hope …

Giving Texas Lawyers Their Dues: The State Bar's Liability Under Hudson And Keller For Political And Ideological Activities., Ralph H. Brock
Giving Texas Lawyers Their Dues: The State Bar's Liability Under Hudson And Keller For Political And Ideological Activities., Ralph H. Brock
St. Mary's Law Journal
The State Bar must provide information for members to assess the propriety of mandatory dues and establish a procedure for members to challenge improper expenditures, however, the Texas State Bar provides no such procedure. Although most states have unified bars, opposition to compulsory bar membership is steady—due largely, to using membership dues to lobby state legislatures in favor of positions which some members may oppose. Chicago Teachers Union v. Hudson and Keller v. State Bar of California are the culmination of labor union and unified bar cases which uphold compulsory membership but establish constitutional limits on the uses of mandatory …
