Factors Controlling The Impacts Of South Louisiana Crude Oil On The Vegetation And Revegetation Of Coastal Wetlands., Qianxin Lin

The impacts of south Louisiana crude oil on three types of marsh, salt, brackish, and freshwater, dominated by Spartina alterniflora, S. patens, and Sagittaria lancifolia, respectively, were studied in the greenhouse. The influence of a number of factors such as marsh type, plant species, oil dosage, oil coverage, soil composition, leaf surface structure, season and meteorological conditions, on the impact of crude oil to marsh vegetation and revegetation were investigated. Vegetative sensitivity to south Louisiana crude oil increased in the order of S. lancifolia, S. alterniflora, and S. patens. Sediment cores were collected to study the development of eutrophication and hydrological changes in coastal Louisiana. The cores were taken at marsh sites hypothesized to be influenced primarily by riverine inputs (Fourleague Bay-FLB), localized activities (Terrebonne Bay-TSMP), and both riverine and localized processes (Airplane Lake-APL). The sediment cores represented time frames ranging from 330 years (APL) to 70 years (TSMP) BP according to core dating results. Sediment core samples were analyzed for diatoms, other microfossils, pigments, biogenic silica, and sediment characteristics. Gonadal maturation of cobia, Rachycentron canadum, was evaluated by examining 508 specimens from its recreational fishery. Specimens were collected off southeast Louisiana to northwest Florida by hook-and-line during February through October 1987-1991. Fork lengths (FL) of these fish ranged from 580-1,530 mm, with corresponding weights of 2.0-43.5 kg. The female:male ratio was 1:0.37. Using a combination of oocyte size frequency and histological assessment of many of the fish, we determined that females were ripe from May through September, with atretic oocytes occurring in some fish from July through October. Soil bioremediation has primarily focused on the use of free living, actively growing microorganisms to degrade toxic organic substances. Recently, however, plants and rhizosphere activity, including mycorrhizal fungi have been increasingly studied to determine the role that consortial assemblages may play in bioremediation. While the enhanced absorbtion of nutrients, water, and minerals by mycorrhizal fungi has been well documented, less is known about their role in the degradation of soil contaminants. Using the Biolog plate technique, microbial communities were characterized in Native Prairie, Corn, and Non-Native Prairie vegetative strips prior to, and after two applications of Acetachlor, Alachlor, and Atrazine. …

This thesis describes palaeoenvironmental investigations on Bodmin Moor aimed at determining the timing, nature and extent of human induced environmental change on the moor. Pollen, charcoal and loss-on-ignition investigations were carried out at two main areas with chronological control provided by radiocarbon dating. The first area investigated was Rough Tor where five sequences were examined.

Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Research

New York City's efforts to avoid filtration mandated by the 1986 Safe Drinking Water Act Amendments and the 1989 Surface Water Treatment Rule have generated considerable controversy. Since the conflict began in 1990, a spectrum of stakeholder groups has emerged, representing land owners, sport fishermen, businesses, environmental groups, developers, and watershed communities. What was originally defined by New York City water supply managers as a scientific problem--identifying sources of water quality degradation and preventing contaminants from entering the water supply system--now has broadened to include a diverse set of social and economic issues as well.

Characterization Of Microorganisms From The Deep Subsurface That Produce Antimicrobial Substances, Michael Victor Staudaher

A group of 95 actinomycete-like bacterial isolates were obtained from the deep subsurface at the Nevada Test Site. These isolates were screened for the ability to inhibit the growth of selected challenge organisms. A subset of 12 isolates were found to produce antibacterial substances during their growth and were termed bioactive. It was hypothesized that because the isolation source was solid rock, some of the bioactive isolates would require the presence of a surface in order to make antibiotic substances, and that some of these isolates would fail to produce antibiotics when grown in broth culture alone. Avian species richness, species diversity, and density were measured and compared over a 21 month period on six riparian sites in Lake Mead National Recreation Area (LMNRA), southern Nevada. Sites consisted of two lake shore areas with almost pure stands of Tamarix ramosissima and four stream side areas, two with mixed Tamarix and native vegetation and two with only native vegetation. Overall mean avian species richness, diversity, and density were lowest on lake shore sites, intermediate on mixed stream sites and highest on stream sites with native vegetation. In this study, the vapor-phase sorption of trichloroethylene (TCE) and benzene onto soil were assessed using Inverse Gas Chromatography (IGC). Soils were treated with two different methods: (1) Soils were incubated with bacterial polysaccharide (to increase organic matter); (2) Soil was modified with cationic surfactant tetrabutyl-ammonium (TBA) and benzyl-diemethyl-sterylammonium (BDMS) respectively. The sorption results on the treated soils were compared to sorption results on the untreated soil. This comparison indicated that there were no significant differences between the VOC sorptions on untreated soil and bacterial polysaccharide treated soil. This present study seeks to determine the bases of our attitudes toward environmental issues. Is it what we think and believe (cognition) about the environment that determines our attitudes or is it what we feel (affect) that informs us. Previous literature indicates that in some areas affect may be a better predictor of attitudes than cognition. Environmental education has evolved primarily from environmental consciousness in the 1960s to an environmentally active focus in the 1990s. This project examined the effectiveness of an environmental education curriculum that focuses on improving environmental behaviors and attitudes as well as knowledge.

A survey was conducted for the National Business Aircraft Association (NBAA) that identified educational content and knowledge areas thought to be important to the success of a corporate aviation flight department manager or chief pilot. The survey consisted of 49 educational course descriptions. Information about the importance of the courses was sought from NBAA member companies, specifically the flight department manager or chief pilot and the individual that the manager or chief pilot reported to in the company.
