Bogged Down Trying To Define Federal Wetlands, James J. S. Johnson, William Lee Logan Iii, Marshall J. Horton Mar 1996

Bogged Down Trying To Define Federal Wetlands, James J. S. Johnson, William Lee Logan Iii, Marshall J. Horton

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

This article examines these cases as well as the history, policies, and rationales behind identifying and conserving wetlands. It proposes a unique analytical method for valuation of wetlands. Under the proposed analysis, government agencies and landowners would be required to prepare economic impact statements containing cost/benefit analyses measuring the effects of wetlands delineations upon land values. These analyses would provide the basis for determining the value of preserving wetlands ecosystems as well as the basis for determining fair compensation payable to landowners in the event they suffer land use or income loss as a result of wetlands delineations.

Archeological Investigations For Fort Stabilization And Restoration, For Mckavett State Historical Park, Menard County, Texas: 1978-1990 Seasons, Amy C. Earls, John Leffler

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

The U.S. Army occupations at Fort McKavett from 1853 until 1859 and from 1868 until 1883 were part of Texas's frontier defense. During the Civil War and from 1883 until the present, civilians have inhabited and used the fort buildings, creating the small town of Fort McKavett. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department developed part of the town as a state historical park, restoring this property to its appearance during the second military occupation. Archeological investigations at the park between 1978 and 1990 focused on recovering architectural data and artifacts to support restoration, stabilization, and interpretation of the military occupations. …

Food Dispersion And Foraging Energetics: A Mechanistic Synthesis For Field Studies Of Avian Benthivores, James R. Lovvorn, Michael P. Gillingham Mar 1996

Food Dispersion And Foraging Energetics: A Mechanistic Synthesis For Field Studies Of Avian Benthivores, James R. Lovvorn, Michael P. Gillingham

Publications

Much effort has focused on modeling and measuring the energy costs of free existence and the foraging strategies of animals. However, few studies have quantitatively linked these approaches to the patch structure of foods in the field. We developed an individual—based model that relates field measurements of the dispersion of benthic foods to search costs and foraging profitability of diving ducks. On Lake Mattamuskeet, North Carolina, Canvasback ducks (Aythya valisineria) eat only the belowground winter buds of the submerged plant Vallisneria americana. We measured and modeled the patch structure of winter buds at the level of potential …
