Danger-Inequality Of Resources Present: Can The Environmental Mediation Process Provide An Effective Answer, Elaine Smith
Danger-Inequality Of Resources Present: Can The Environmental Mediation Process Provide An Effective Answer, Elaine Smith
Journal of Dispute Resolution
The environmental dispute resolution field has grown rapidly since its advent in 1973, when two mediators, Gerald Cormick and Jane McCarthy, undertook the first documented attempt to settle an environmental dispute.' Since this initial effort, the use of mediation in environmental disputes has grown rapidly, leading to the continual evolution and improvement of the field. Despite this progress, mediation in environmental disputes remains as it began: a hotly contested issue, with prominent and influential commentators vigorously debating whether it is an appropriate device to resolve environmental disputes

Race Redistricting, And The Congressional Black Caucus--Who Needs Em'!?: Gauging The Essentiality Of African American Congresspersons, Tara N. Gillespie
Honors Theses
In light of the recent controversy surrounding the validity of race conscious redistricting, the practice of creating congressional districts with an African American or Hispanic majority population, an important question arises; are the votes of African American congresspersons even critical to the passage of policy issues salient to the African American populace. This study seeks to prove that the votes of African American congresspersons are crucial to the passage of House policy issues salient to the African American community. To prove this hypothesis this study analyzed the voting cohesion and pivotal voting bloc influence of each Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) …

Expanding The Boundaries Of Architectural Education: Making A Path To Sustainable Communities, Margot Mcdonald
Expanding The Boundaries Of Architectural Education: Making A Path To Sustainable Communities, Margot Mcdonald
Architecture
Architectural education offers students practice with complex problem-solving, most often separate from the public they will eventually serve. Design education that addresses real clients and real world concerns such as renewable energy and resources, social equity and environmental justice, and economic feasibility demands the skills of coordination, communication, vision, and leadership different from conventional architectural education. This paper outlines an innovative university curriculum that moves in the direction of educating architects as community leaders based on sustainable design and the concept of community in every aspect of the teaching model. Specifically, the teaching model creates an interactive group dynamic in …

Beyond The Horizon: Proceedings Of Symposium Ill On African-American Mobility Issues, Beverly Ward, Eric Hill
CUTR Research Reports
These proceedings provide a summary of the activities undertaken by the Center for Urban Transportation Research et alia to convene the third symposium on African-American mobility issues and serve as the final report.
African-Americans comprise a significant portion of transit ridership; however, a comparable representation does not exist at the decisionmaking and planning levels. (Emphasis is placed on the transit industry as African-Americans, particularly African-American women, are the primary users of transit. Low-income and minority communities also may be uniquely affected by other modes of transportation.) Although significant improvements have occurred in recent years, the need to examine the issues …
