Life History And Reproductive Biology Of The Estuarine Nudibranch Tenellia Adspersa (Nordmann, 1845), Charles Morgan Chester Jan 1996

Life History And Reproductive Biology Of The Estuarine Nudibranch Tenellia Adspersa (Nordmann, 1845), Charles Morgan Chester

Doctoral Dissertations

Tenellia adspersa is a small (5-7 mm) estuarine nudibranch. Tenellia lives in a highly variable environment and feeds on many gymnoblastic and calyptoblastic hydroids. I undertook a field study at four sites in the Great Bay Estuary (Durham, New Hampshire) to assess the amount of variability in abiotic and biotic factors. Environmental parameters (temperature and salinity) and the availability of hydroid prey (Cordyolophora lacustris and Obelia spp.) varied within the generation time of Tenellia and could affect its life history.

Laboratory studies compared the growth rate of the hydroid, Cordylophora to the growth rate and predation rate of Tenellia. The …

Professors As Clients For Instructional Development, Ronald A. Smith, George L. Geis Jan 1996

Professors As Clients For Instructional Development, Ronald A. Smith, George L. Geis

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Although there is a large amount of activity and a sizeable literature in the area of instructional development, there has been relatively little research on faculty members, the clientele for improvement efforts. This paper highlights some characteristics of professors that are relevant to improvement activities. Professors are interested in, value, and work on their teaching; they think they teach rather well. However, they demonstrate a lack of sophistication in talking about teaching and the development of instruction. They focus primarily upon content rather than design or methodology. Teachers' views of what should be done to enhance instruction are discussed and …

The Natural History Of Aconitum Noveboracense Gray (Northern Monkshood), A Federally Threatened Species, Margaret A. Kuchenreuther Jan 1996

The Natural History Of Aconitum Noveboracense Gray (Northern Monkshood), A Federally Threatened Species, Margaret A. Kuchenreuther

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Aconitum noveboracense Gray (Ranunculaceae), commonly known as northern monkshood, is a federally threatened herbaceous perennial that occurs in disjunct populations in Iowa, Wisconsin, Ohio and New York. It appears to be a glacial relict, existing today only in unique areas with cool, moist microenvironments, such as algific talus slopes. Field studies reveal that A. noveboracense has a complex life history. Perennation of individual plants occurs through the annual production of daughter tubers. Vegetative reproduction is commonly observed, and can occur by means of aerial and subterranean bulbils, as well as by development of adventitious root buds. Populations also reproduce sexually …

Ecology And Community Relationships Of The River Cooter, Pseudemys Concinna In A Southern Illinois Backwater, Michael J. Dreslik Jan 1996

Ecology And Community Relationships Of The River Cooter, Pseudemys Concinna In A Southern Illinois Backwater, Michael J. Dreslik

Masters Theses

In Illinois the River cooter, Pseudemys concinna, is an enigmatic endangered species. Even throughout its range, ecological studies on the River cooter are rare. During 1994 and 1995 I quantified the: growth rates and trends, population size and structure and dietary habits of a population from floodplain lake in Gallatin county, Illinois. Population estimation (Schnabel method) predicted 136 individuals at a density of 4.6 turtles/ha with a biomass of 3.6 Kg/ha. The sex ratio is slightly male biased (1:1.14). From back-calculated growth data, the von Bertalanffy growth model (Fabens' method) estimates males with a higher growth rate (k) and …

Capitalist "Communes" In The United States: The Commodification Of Urban Space And The Rise Of Master-Planned Communities, David Lee Derossett Jan 1996

Capitalist "Communes" In The United States: The Commodification Of Urban Space And The Rise Of Master-Planned Communities, David Lee Derossett

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The U.S. has experienced a dramatic proliferation of corporate master-planned communities, along with a related equally sharp increase in the numbers of people governed by private residential community associations (RCAs). Increasing by approximately 9,500 annually, RCA's are expected to grow from 130,000 in 1990 to approximately 225,000 by the year 2000. This trend is a manifestation of both the historical commodification of urban and community space and the gradual imposition of the corporate bureaucratic structure into community maintenance and governance. Intended to stimulate commodity need fulfillment and ensure the continued dominance of patriarchal bourgeois ideology, this new community form has …

Development Of An Educational Overburden Index For New Mexico Schools, Karen Marie Stansfield-Paquette

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to develop an educational overburden index (EOI) as a component in the New Mexico Public School Funding Formula. This is part of an ongoing research effort to develop a methodology for the distribution of funds based on the unique characteristics and needs of individual school districts. Research indicated that measuring and predicting populations containing at-risk students can be accomplished through application of multiple variables which reflect home, school, and community concerns. The study initially began with a selection of indicators from data provided by the New Mexico State Department of Education and the U.S. …

Mortuary Practices On Children, Stephanie Jo Fox Jan 1996

Mortuary Practices On Children, Stephanie Jo Fox

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study is a reevaluation of past theories that recommend the use of mortuary practices to determine rank within cultures as applied to children. A comparative study of 40 cultures world wide is conducted using the Human Relation Area Files for ethnographic examples of mortuary practices. Funerary and mourning rituals performed for both children and adults are studied to see how the deceased's social position affects mortuary treatment. Thirteen of 26 egalitarian cultures that yielded information have funerary and mourning rituals that are the same or very similar for both adults and children. With thirteen remaining egalitarian cultures the data …

Music And Interpersonal Communication: An In-Depth View Of Ani Difranco And Her Lyrics, Robyn Jana Ginsburg Jan 1996

Music And Interpersonal Communication: An In-Depth View Of Ani Difranco And Her Lyrics, Robyn Jana Ginsburg

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study provides an analysis of music as a form of interpersonal communication by examining how independent singer/songwriter Ani DiFranco's music lyrics provide her listeners with a foundation for relationship formation based on empathy and self disclosure. This study divides DiFranco's song lyrics into three categories of folk music, more specifically, message, protest, and propaganda songs which provide her audience with an ideology to which her fans can relate. Additionally, DiFranco's messages fall into the psychological categories of emotion, perception, cognition, motivation, needs, and memory as well as the sociological categories which demonstrate how her messages reach society--through the folk …

Unsafe Abortion In Kenya: Findings From Eight Studies, Khama Rogo, Ann Leonard Jan 1996

Unsafe Abortion In Kenya: Findings From Eight Studies, Khama Rogo, Ann Leonard

Reproductive Health

One of the most topical areas in reproductive health today is the consequences of induced and often unsafe abortion. Safe motherhood initiatives continue to highlight the contribution of unsafe abortion to the persistent high rates of maternal mortality and morbidity in sub-Saharan Africa. In some countries, unsafe abortion is responsible for up to half of all maternal mortality and morbidity, with adolescents constituting a significant proportion of those procuring unsafe abortions. In Kenya, concern about the problem of incomplete and septic abortion has increased, particularly on the part of service providers who must treat women suffering from the complications of …

Use Of Noncognitive Variables To Predict Academic Success And Retention Among A Group Of White Academically Disadvantaged College Students, Pamela Krake Fletcher

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

At many American colleges and universities, efforts to enhance the retention of a diverse group of students have become a priority. This study represents part of this effort at the University of Central Florida, a large public suburban state university in the South. Specifically, this investigation evaluated Pegasus '95 and the Academic Mentoring Program offered in the Summer and Fall Semesters of 1995 to specially-admitted students who fell short of regular admissions requirements. During the summer, Pegasus '95 provided testing, orientation, guided course work, study skills workshops, and mentoring, both individually and in the context of cohesive socialization groups of …

A Training Program For Grief Ministry For Singapore Seventh-Day Adventist Pastors, Chor Kiat Sim Jan 1996

A Training Program For Grief Ministry For Singapore Seventh-Day Adventist Pastors, Chor Kiat Sim

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

Many Seventh-day Adventist church pastors in Singapore are not trained in grief ministry. This results in some pastors who are insensitive to the grieving. Consequently, theirs and many church members' grief has been unresolved. This study was undertaken to develop a holistic pastoral perspective regarding grief and to compose a training program in grief ministry that will help pastors understand their own grief dynamics and that of their parishioners.

Method

This project attempts to present the principles of grief ministry through the following dimensions: (1) Singapore's need of grief ministry in the midst of socioeconomic development; (2) the study …

Archaeology, The Ancient World, And The Bible: An Integrated Evangelistic Approach, Franke Jon Zollman Jan 1996

Archaeology, The Ancient World, And The Bible: An Integrated Evangelistic Approach, Franke Jon Zollman

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. Recent studies of the Seventh-day Adventist church have revealed that there are several large segments of society in the United States that are not present in the church in large numbers. Among them are groups of people who have attained high socioeconomic levels and above average educational levels. Many of the people who live in the Chestnut Hill section of the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, are in these groups. Traditional Adventist evangelistic methods have not attracted them. This project sought to develop an archaeologically based evangelistic approach that would attract people with similar characteristics.

Method. A series of twenty …

Analysis And Evaluation Of The Ministry Of The Hamilton Community Church To The Unchurched, Mark C. Bresee Jan 1996

Analysis And Evaluation Of The Ministry Of The Hamilton Community Church To The Unchurched, Mark C. Bresee

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. During my first eight years in the ministry I was troubled that members did not feel comfortable inviting unchurched seekers to our weekend worship services. I was concerned about the fact that most churches, including mine, were not reaching the unchurched.

Method. In 1990 I attended a Pastor’s Conference at the Willow Creek Community Church near Chicago, Illinois, where I learned how their philosophy and strategy for ministry had resulted in great success in reaching the unchurched. In September of 1991 we planted the Hamilton Community Church in Chattanooga, Tennessee using some of the philosophy and strategy of the …
