Individual Group Flight Of European Starlings And Budgerigars In A Wind Tunnel Without A Horizon Reference, Robert G. Moyle Jan 1996

Individual Group Flight Of European Starlings And Budgerigars In A Wind Tunnel Without A Horizon Reference, Robert G. Moyle

Open Access Master's Theses

I studied the ability and willingness of European Starlings (Stumus vulgaris) and Budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) to fly under different lighting conditions in a wind tunnel. My observations indicate that these birds can fly under conditions that supply no visual reference points, but their flight ability is more proficient when some light is available. The addition of a single horizon line to dark conditions improved the birds' flight ability and willingness, as indicated by an increase in the number of birds that took flight after landing. When small flocks were flown in the wind tunnel there was …

Design For Disassembly And Environment, Andrew Abbott Jan 1996

Design For Disassembly And Environment, Andrew Abbott

Open Access Master's Theses

Government pressure, increased consumer awareness, and decreasing landfill space are affecting manufacturers. As product take-back becomes the norm, manufacturers will need tools to help them deal with end of life products.

Environmental policies are changing. Germany, Denmark, Sweden, and other countries are forming partnership strategies with manufacturers, aiming for resource management and eco-development. "Green" products and product reclamation are important parts of these programs.

Designing for disassembly can be profitable, but needs planning. Tools exist for determining economically optimized and environmentally optimized disassembly sequences for end of life products. However, there is a lack of a system that balances between …

Biogeography Of Arkansas Mammals With Notes On Species Of Questionable Status, Gary A. Heidt, Douglas A. Elrod, V. Rick Mcdaniel

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Seventy-one native or re-introduced species of mammals were analyzed with respect to their geographical distributions and relationships to the four broad physiographical regions of Arkansas. Mammalian diversity in the Ozark Mountains, Ouachita Mountains/ Arkansas River Valley, Gulf Coastal Plain, and Mississippi Alluvial Plain/Crowley's Ridge was not area dependent. The majority of mammalian species (44) occurs statewide with the greatest diversity in the interior highland regions. The Ozark Mountains contain the most species endemic to an area. Thirteen species which are of questionable status in Arkansas are discussed. The presence of the plains pocket gopher (Geomys bursarius), a second species of …

Punitive Damages In Ancient Roman And Contemporary American Tort Law, Esther Julia Sonntag Jan 1996

Punitive Damages In Ancient Roman And Contemporary American Tort Law, Esther Julia Sonntag

LLM Theses and Essays

Both ancient Roman and contemporary American tort law recognize a type of damages that, instead of compensating the plaintiff for harm suffered, punishes the wrongdoer. In American law, courts can award two distinct amounts of money: compensatory damages for the plaintiff’s loss, and punitive damages as punishment and deterrence. Ancient Roman law had more extreme forms of remedies. In both legal systems there has been a trend to restrict punitive damages over time. The United States made efforts in the 1980s to place caps on punitive damages, which were referred to as “relics of the past,” and enhance requirements for …

Paradigms For The Design Of Multimedia Learning Environments In Engineering, Chrisopher Robert Smith Jan 1996

Paradigms For The Design Of Multimedia Learning Environments In Engineering, Chrisopher Robert Smith

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

The starting point for this research was the belief that interactive multimedia learning environments represent a significant evolution in computer based learning and therefore their design requires a re-examination of the underlying principles of learning and knowledge representation. Current multimedia learning environments (MLEs) can be seen as descendants of the earlier technologies of computer-aided learning (CAL), intelligent tutoring systems (ITS) and videodisc-based learning systems. As such they can benefit from much of the wisdom which emerged from those technologies. However, multimedia can be distinguished from earlier technologies by its much greater facility in bringing to the learner high levels of …

Under Blue Skies : The Social Construction Of Intellectual Disability In Western Australia, Errol Cocks (Ed.) Jan 1996

Under Blue Skies : The Social Construction Of Intellectual Disability In Western Australia, Errol Cocks (Ed.)

Research outputs pre 2011

Research into the history of people with intellectual disabilities in Western Australia has been a sporadic undertaking. Scholarship to date has been mainly institutional in character and often undertaken as an adjunct to the study of mental illness. The people themselves have remained mostly invisible. In 1989, the Editors conceived of a social history research project in which, for the first time, an attempt would be made to document the lives of people with intellectual disabilities in Western Australia The project would also aim to describe the institutional, social, political and professional history we identify with mainstream historical scholarship...

An Approach For The Development Of Computer Based Best Practice Delivery Mechanisms For Small And Medium Sized Manufacturing Enterprises, Philip Andrew Smart Jan 1996

An Approach For The Development Of Computer Based Best Practice Delivery Mechanisms For Small And Medium Sized Manufacturing Enterprises, Philip Andrew Smart

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Changes in the competitive environment have strongly influenced manufacturing companies to adopt and develop best practice. Best practice is usually imported into companies using the services of consultancy organisations. The use of consultancy services does not guarantee success however, and inadequate results have been obtained by practitioners who have engaged in client-consultant relationships. The inadequacy of these results may be explained by the installation of pre-defined solutions by consultants as opposed to the adaptation and implementation of solutions to meet the specific requirements of practitioners. Tills may in part be explained by a lack of understanding of 'best practice'. Tills …

The overall goal of this project is to investigate the mechanism and recovery of propanil induced thymic atrophy and the effect of propanil on T cell cytokine production. Using cell …

Managing External Threats To National Parks In Canada's Western Mountains (Alberta), George Yap Jan 1996

Managing External Threats To National Parks In Canada's Western Mountains (Alberta), George Yap

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

External threats to protected areas exist because the area encompassed by the legal boundaries of many protected areas is less than what is needed to maintain a minimum viable population of various animal species and some types of plant associations. While external stresses to parks are the result of a wide range of human activities, they threaten ecological integrity in two general ways: by contributing to habitat fragmentation, alienation and loss (HFAL), and/or undermining the long-term viability of transboundary animal populations. However, in comparison to internal threats, addressing external threats is considerably more complex since park managers have no legal …

Comparative Risk Assessment In New York, Michael B. Gerrard, Deborah Goldberg Jan 1996

Comparative Risk Assessment In New York, Michael B. Gerrard, Deborah Goldberg

Faculty Scholarship

Comparative risk assessment (CRA) is the examination of the relative risks posed by different dangers, with a view to deciding which dangers deserve the most governmental attention. CRA frequently tries to reduce different problems to a common metric, usually the statistical lives saved by a program, so that apples can be weighed against oranges. This article will discuss and assess the growing use of CRA in New York State.

There are two principal arguments for the use of CRA in the environmental context. The first is that we do not have unlimited resources; we cannot move against all problems simultaneously. …

Katelyn's Emergent Literacy Story: A Case Study And Consolidated Literature Review Of The Development Of Literacy From Birth To Three Years., Sherrie Kimberly Wampler Jan 1996

Katelyn's Emergent Literacy Story: A Case Study And Consolidated Literature Review Of The Development Of Literacy From Birth To Three Years., Sherrie Kimberly Wampler

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

By definition, the study of emergent literacy must address the literacy development of children from "birth" to "conventional literacy." In actuality, studies of the literacy development of children between the ages of 2 and 4 have become common, while studies regarding literacy development of 1-year-olds is extremely limited and studies beginning at birth even fewer. Through this study, data regarding the language, reading, and writing behaviors of children from birth to three years is identified, consolidated, and confirmed. Two research questions guided this study: (1) What are the emergent literacy behaviors of a child from birth to three years? (2) …

A Qualitative Evaluation Of The S.A.I.F. Programme, Anne Blair

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis describes an evaluation of Sexual Assault in Families Inc., Perth, Western Australia (the SAIF programme) which offers therapy and counselling to families where one or more of the children have been sexually abused by one of the family members. The purpose of the study was to demonstrate the use of a triangulated qualitative research methodology in order to determine whether the programme is achieving its objectives in terms of service delivery. It adopted a phenomenological approach in which participants were acknowledged as expert informants who were capable of identifying valued aspects of the programme. The participants were twelve …

Politeness And Paradigms Of Family: A Perspective On The Development Of Communicative Competence In The Japanese Esl Speaker, Christopher J. Conlan Jan 1996

Politeness And Paradigms Of Family: A Perspective On The Development Of Communicative Competence In The Japanese Esl Speaker, Christopher J. Conlan

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis examines the issue of linguistic politeness in English with specific reference to Japanese ESL speakers. It develops a theoretical framework that sees shared assumptions concerning the marking of social-power and social-distance differentials as crucial. Developing the notion that linguistic politeness is a function of a status-dependent and context-dependent variety of language usage, it argues that there are four fundamental types of utterances, and that speech acts conforming to any of the power and distance configurations by means of which these four utterance types are defined can be considered to be polite if-but only if -both speaker and hearer …

Identification As A Motivator Of Environmentally Responsible Tourist Behaviour, Steve Sertis Jan 1996

Identification As A Motivator Of Environmentally Responsible Tourist Behaviour, Steve Sertis

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This study examined the use of information in motivating environmentally responsible behaviour. In light of the ineffectiveness of traditional educational methods that have focussed upon affecting behaviour by changing attitudes through the manipulation of cognitive variables, an attempt was made to produce a sense of identification with the Rottnest Island Quokka using the tripartite model of motivational bases of attitudes developed by Hills (1993 ). This model used to determine whether different kinds of information would produce changes in environmental behaviour. Three groups of tourists were given either no information; factual information, consistent with current educational techniques used to influence …

An Investigation Into Motor Pools And Their Applicability To A Biologically Inspired Model Of Ballistic Voluntary Motor Action, Mark Paul Norman Jan 1996

An Investigation Into Motor Pools And Their Applicability To A Biologically Inspired Model Of Ballistic Voluntary Motor Action, Mark Paul Norman

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

This study investigates the properties of motor pools in the human motor control system. The simulations carried out as part of this study used two biologically inspired neuronal models to simulate networks with properties similar to those observed in the human motor system (Burke, 1991). The Synchronous neuronal model developed as part of this study explicitly models the input/output spike train and frequency relationship of each neuron. The motor pool simulations were carried out using the INSIGHT TOO simulation software developed as part of this study. INSIGHT TOO is a flexible neural design tool that allows the visual interactive design …
