Transmittance And Reflectance Measurements Of Corn Leaves From Plants With Different Nitrogen And Water Supply, James S. Schepers, T. M. Blackmer, Wallace Wilhelm, M. Resende Nov 1996

Transmittance And Reflectance Measurements Of Corn Leaves From Plants With Different Nitrogen And Water Supply, James S. Schepers, T. M. Blackmer, Wallace Wilhelm, M. Resende

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Nitrogen is essential for crop production, but also contributes to eutrophication of surface water and degradation of drinking water quality. Modern corn production requires relatively large quantities of N, which are generally supplied by fertilizers. Over-application of N fertilizers and animal wastes frequently results in nitrate leaching. Synchronizing N availability with crop N need offers the potential to protect the environment without sacrificing production. Tools are needed to rapidly and easily monitor crop N status to make timely decisions regarding fertilizer application. Analytical and optical techniques were evaluated with greenhouse grown corn at silking to evaluate several methods to monitor …

Roman Slave Law: An Anglo-American Perspective, Alan Watson Nov 1996

Roman Slave Law: An Anglo-American Perspective, Alan Watson

Cardozo Law Review

The most influential secular system of law in the West has been Roman private law. This is true even of its slave law, which was received not only in states of Europe where slavery survived, but also in European colonies in America, whether those of Spain, Portugal, France, or the Dutch West India Company. Though slavery had died out in France and the Dutch Republic, when slavery appeared in the colonies, recourse was had above all to Roman law.

Cellular Basis Of Decreased Immune Responses To Pneumococcal Vaccines In Aged Mice, Manju Garg, Wei Luo, Alan M. Kaplan, Subbarao Bondada Nov 1996

Cellular Basis Of Decreased Immune Responses To Pneumococcal Vaccines In Aged Mice, Manju Garg, Wei Luo, Alan M. Kaplan, Subbarao Bondada

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

Previously, model systems were developed in our laboratory to study murine immune responses to the 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine Pnu-Imune, both in vivo and in vitro (M. Garg and B. Subbarao, Infect. Immun. 60:2329-2336, 1992; M. Garg, A. M. Kaplan, and S. Bondada, J. Immunol. 152: 1589-1596, 1994). Using these systems, we found that aged mice did not respond to the vaccine in vivo or in vitro. Cell separation studies showed that the unresponsiveness of the aged spleen cells to the vaccine was not due to an intrinsic B-cell defect or to T-cell-mediated immunosuppression but resulted from an accessory cell …

Effect Of Sediment Particle Size And Temperature On Fecal Bacteria Mortality Rates And The Fecal Coliform/Fecal Streptococci Ratio, J. M. Howell, Mark S. Coyne, P. L. Cornelius Nov 1996

Effect Of Sediment Particle Size And Temperature On Fecal Bacteria Mortality Rates And The Fecal Coliform/Fecal Streptococci Ratio, J. M. Howell, Mark S. Coyne, P. L. Cornelius

Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty Publications

Extended survival of fecal bacteria in sediment can obscure the source and extent of fecal contamination in agricultural settings. The variability in fecal coliform/fecal streptococci (FC/FS) ratios with time and discrepancies between observable fecal sources and measured FC/FS ratios in shallow surface water from agricultural watersheds may be explained by examining FC and FS mortality rates in response to ambient temperature and sediment particle size. We measured FC and FS mortality rates at three different temperatures and in three feces-amended sediments with different particle size in a laboratory study. In controlled conditions, using physiological saline to reduce cell death by …

The Use Of Bauxite Residue As A Soil Amendment In The Peel-Harvey Coastal Plain Catchment - Report On Results Of 1995 Environmental Monitoring Program, Mark Rivers Nov 1996

The Use Of Bauxite Residue As A Soil Amendment In The Peel-Harvey Coastal Plain Catchment - Report On Results Of 1995 Environmental Monitoring Program, Mark Rivers

Natural resources published reports

This report was submitted in accordance with the recommendations of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) who have stated that a monitoring program shall be undertaken by Agriculture Western Australia within six months of the widespread use of bauxite residue as a soil amendment. Although this widespread use of bauxite residue has not yet formally commenced, pre-emptive monitoring has been undertaken in order to gain some understanding of the general environmental characteristics of the Peel-Harvey catchment and, in particular, the characteristics and quality of the water flowing through the catchment.

It represents the second annual report submitted to the EPA describing …

Western Australian Salinity Action Plan, Agriculture Western Australia, Department Of Conservation And Land Management, Department Of Environmental Protection, Water And Rivers Commission Nov 1996

Western Australian Salinity Action Plan, Agriculture Western Australia, Department Of Conservation And Land Management, Department Of Environmental Protection, Water And Rivers Commission

Natural resources published reports

Salinity is one of the State's most critical environmental problems, threatening major economic and social consequences. It is preventable and, in the long term, reversible. Complete elimination is not realistic, but we can dramatically reduce its impact.

Salinity is caused by replacing deep-rooted native plants with shallow-rooted crops and pastures. More rainfall passed below the root zone and accumulates as groundwater so that watertables rise. The groundwater mobilises natural salts in the soil as it rises and carries them towards the surface, eventually degrading land and streams.

Using The Spot-Mapping Censusing Technique To Assess Changes In Breeding Bird Communities At Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, Alamo, Texas, 1940-1996, Alberto Cantu

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Results of breeding-bird censuses done by Davis in 1940 and by Gehlbach between 1973-1978 at Santa Ana National Wildlife, Alamo Texas, were compared to a 1995-1996 bird survey done in Gehlbach's study area. According to the Wilcoxon rank-sum test, bird densities in 1940 and 1995-1996 were similar, while 1973-1978 densities were lower. The 1995-1996 bird community was 76% similar to both the earlier studies. However, the communities studied in 1940 and 1973-1978 had only a 60% similarity. Negligible differences in bird densities and species composition were found between the 1995 and 1996 communities. Differences are attributed to changes in vegetation …

Western Australian Primary Industry And Fisheries Portfolios - Major Achievements 1993 - 1996, Department Of Primary Industry And Fisheries, Western Australia

Farm Systems and Economics published reports

AGRICULTURE and fishing were WA's first industries. Farm production in particular, was the State's economic mainstay for many years. It re1mains crucial lo our prosperity, and its future holds enormous potential.

As well as employment and income, agriculture and fisheries provide important recreation and landscape opportunities for our highly urbanised population, rural communities and international visitors. Recreational fishing- which is extremely popular - and the emerging farm tourism industry arc direct beneficiaries of strategics developed for sustainable primary industries.

The Evolving Style Of Libby Larsen, Alicia Cook

Graduate Thesis Collection

The quality of their work, past and present, is being compared to the great masters of the past, and critics like what they see. Women are composing with the same skill and determination of the modern male composer, and they are succeeding. One women in particular is making a name for herself, not only as a contemporary composer, but also as a strong and articulate supporter for the music and musicians of the present day. Her name is Libby Larsen.
