The Principle Of Biological Attraction, Demonstrated By The Bio-Continuum Theory Of Zooplankton Patch Dynamics, Meng Zhou, Mark E. Huntley
The Principle Of Biological Attraction, Demonstrated By The Bio-Continuum Theory Of Zooplankton Patch Dynamics, Meng Zhou, Mark E. Huntley
Journal of Marine Research
A theory of zooplankton and micronekton patch dynamics is developed that expressly includes animal behavior. This represents a departure from traditional models of patch dynamics, which generally treat animals as Lagrangian particles whose distributions are determined solely by processes of advection and diffusion. The “bio-continuum” theory is based on principles of statistical mechanics, and describes animal aggregations in terms of mean motion, random motion, random kinetic energy, distribution and abundance. The forces on an animal aggregation act both upon the aggregation as a whole (external forces) or between individuals (internal forces). We demonstrate here that the internal forces which serve …
Oxygen And Ph Regulation Of Protein Synthesis In Mitochondria From Artemia Franciscana Embryos, Kurt E. Kwast, Steven C. Hand
Oxygen And Ph Regulation Of Protein Synthesis In Mitochondria From Artemia Franciscana Embryos, Kurt E. Kwast, Steven C. Hand
Faculty Publications
To identify factors responsible for the down-regulation of mitochondrial biosynthetic processes during anoxia in encysted Artemia franciscana embryos, the effects of oxygen limitation and pH on protein synthesis were investigated in isolated mitochondria. At the optimal pH of 7.5, exposure of mitochondria to anoxia decreases the protein synthesis rate by 79%. Rates were suppressed by a further 10% at pH 6.8, the intracellular pH (pH,) measured under anoxia in vivo. Matrix pH, measured under identical conditions, was 8.43 ± 0.01 at an extramitochondrial pH of 7.9 (mean ± S.E.M. n = 3), 8.05 ± 0.01 at pH 7.5, and 7.10 …

Jungle Travel, Jorge Ameglio
Jungle Travel, Jorge Ameglio
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
The following is a study prepared so that I, Jorge Ameglio, can open a full service travel agency in Miami named Jungle Travel (Jungle) focusing on tourism to Panama. I will show here that it can be profitable, not only for investors and myself, but also for my country, Panama. I plan to demonstrate the feasibility and the need for a business such as this one.
Now, I ask, can Jungle become operational with a fair-sized initial investment of $150,000.00? Likewise, the problem that lies herein, is whether there is an economic and business viability in establishing a travel agency …
An Evolutionary Simulation Of The Tragedy Of The Commons, Gretchen Oosterhout
An Evolutionary Simulation Of The Tragedy Of The Commons, Gretchen Oosterhout
Dissertations and Theses
In his seminal essay, "The Tragedy of the Commons" (1968), Garrett Hardin argued that unless human population growth is controlled, the tragedy of common resource destruction is inevitable. This research consists of the development of an evolutionary computer model to simulate the Tragedy of the Commons, and social and economic solutions that have been proposed. In the simulations, multiattribute decision models are used to represent the tradeoffs a variety of types of individuals make among economic and social values in an uncertain environment. Individuals in each iteration of the simulation decide whether or not to exploit a common resource that …

Understanding Constitutional War Powers Today: Why Methodology Matters, Jane E. Stromseth
Understanding Constitutional War Powers Today: Why Methodology Matters, Jane E. Stromseth
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
With the Cold War over, Americans have grown more introspective about the role of the United States in global affairs. It could hardly be otherwise. America's rise to military preeminence, its overseas commitments and priorities, and its basic sense of international purpose all were forged by circumstances of the past fifty years that have changed dramatically. The Soviet threat is gone; once shaky allies in Europe and Asia are now comparatively stable and prosperous; the specter of cataclysmic nuclear war has receded while regional conflicts, ethnic strife, and humanitarian emergencies have moved to center stage. Although the world is no …

The Antioxidant Role Of Α-Tocopherol In The Nutrition Of African Catfish (Clarias Gariepinus Burchell), Remi Thomas Merrett Baker
The Antioxidant Role Of Α-Tocopherol In The Nutrition Of African Catfish (Clarias Gariepinus Burchell), Remi Thomas Merrett Baker
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
The role of the lipid-soluble antioxidant α-tocopherol (vitamin E) in the nutrition of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus Burchell) has been investigated with respect to effects on growth, certain indices of health and prevention of tissue lipid peroxidation. Although juvenile C. gariepinus were not found to show an immediate dependency on vitamin E for growth, even during rapid growth stages, a minimum requirement of α-tocopherol based on the prevention of hepatic lipid peroxidation was established at 30-40mg α-tocopherol per kg dry diet. This is in line with published values for numerous cultured fish species. Tissue α-tocopherol accretion was found to be …
The Conservation And Ecology Of The Heath Lobelia, Lobelia Urens L., Janet Mary Dinsdale
The Conservation And Ecology Of The Heath Lobelia, Lobelia Urens L., Janet Mary Dinsdale
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
This programme of research examines the ecology of the threatened perennial Lobelia urens L. (the heath lobelia) which reaches the northern limit of its distribution in the southern coastal counties of England. A survey of the historical evidence of the distribution of the species in England is presented. Restricted to such a small area, L. urens has always been rare in Britain. The six remaining populations were surveyed to describe the phytosociology of communities containing L. urens and the variability of the environmental factors controlling its distribution. L. urens is shown to be a member of rough grass-heath communities dominated …
Enhanced Oil Degradation By Bacteria When Immobilized To An Oleophilic Substratum, Nicola Gail Wilson
Enhanced Oil Degradation By Bacteria When Immobilized To An Oleophilic Substratum, Nicola Gail Wilson
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Three immobilization matrices, Biofix (kaolinite microspheres), Drizit (polypropylene fibres) and polyester polyurethane were used as substrata for use in bioremediation. Enhanced biodegradation of petrol (Slovene diesel) and Ekofisk crude oil occurred with immobilization of Pseudomonas fluorescens to Biofix and Drizit in freshwater and saltwater systems. When compared to free bacteria, immobilization resulted in; increased growth, accelerated ability of the cells to utilize oil, and enhanced biodegradation as determined by gas chromatography. In the freshwater systems Drizit immobilized cells reduced the lag phase to one day in comparison to six in a free system and increased biodegradation of the n-alkanes by …
Poor Relief, Welfare Paralysis, And Assimilation, Larry Catá Backer
Poor Relief, Welfare Paralysis, And Assimilation, Larry Catá Backer
Utah Law Review
We argue as if there were some sort of objective measure of optimality. We cling to the notion that we can know and prove to others that choices are good, bad, better, best, or worst. We cannot. That enterprise is as presumptuous as the attempt to prove the (non)existence of God by scientific methods. I have tried to show that valuation is a subjective enterprise-the best we can hope for is the comfort of discovering what society believes the optimum to be. To the extent that society believes a particular coordinate expresses an optimum, then perhaps we would not be …
Teaching The Republican Child: Three Antebellum Stories About Law, Schooling, And The Construction Of American Families, Michael Grossberg
Teaching The Republican Child: Three Antebellum Stories About Law, Schooling, And The Construction Of American Families, Michael Grossberg
Utah Law Review
The stories of Sarah, Lewis, and Thomas, like other stories, can be told in many ways. They also have multiple meanings. My renditions of the tales highlight how law has helped define the family in critical struggles between families and school officials over what and how to teach the children of the republic. They are thus stories about how law became a way to express, contest, and legitimate the new educational order. In the process, they suggest how the American resort to legal means also constructed crucial elements in the identities of students, parents, and teachers. Equally important, considering these …
Punitive Damages In The American Civil Justice System: Jackpot Or Justice?, Jill Mckee Pohlman
Punitive Damages In The American Civil Justice System: Jackpot Or Justice?, Jill Mckee Pohlman
Utah Law Review
Few issues in the realm of the American civil justice system have been as widely debated as the doctrine of punitive damages. In recent years, the debate has swelled among scholars, commentators, and the public as juries have imposed these awards with greater frequency and in greater amounts. Many have even referred to these awards as "jackpots" because they are awarded in large amounts without any predictability and often without reason. Both the United States Supreme Court and Congress have had an opportunity to impose substantive limits on these exemplary damages, but both have failed to articulate any effective reforms …

Where's The Beef? Allocating The Burden Of Proof In Bailment Agreements Involving Missing Cattle Grazed On Public Rangeland: Cornia V. Wilcox, Sara E. Bouley
Utah Law Review
Practitioners and scholars alike often regard bailment as an arcane and parochial subject despite the fact that a large number of bailment cases still appear before American courts.' This phenomenon is most perplexing considering the prevalence of bailments in modern commercial law cases; the disagreement among jurisdictions and legal scholars as to bailment law's exact scope and the rules governing it; and the fact that statutes governing certain areas of bailment law are still interpreted according to common-law standards. One modern type of bailment that is quite common in cattle country is a grazing lease or agistment arrangement whereby one …
Eco-Physiology Of Mysids (Crustacea; Peracarida) In The River Tamar Estuary., Angela Mary Moffat
Eco-Physiology Of Mysids (Crustacea; Peracarida) In The River Tamar Estuary., Angela Mary Moffat
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
The mysid fauna of the River Tamar Estuary was sampled monthly between January and December 1989. The following species of mysid were found In the estuary. MosopodOPSIS slabborl, Noomysis Intogor, Praunus fioxuosus and SchistomysIs omata. The latter two species, present In low densities throughout tho year, occupied the lower, more salino (>30%o) parts of the estuary, whereas M. slabborl and N. Intogor were abundant In the upper estuary (0.5-30%o). Mosopodopsis slabbori produced between two and three generations per year, and showed a pattern of alternating early and lato-brooding generations. A maximum growth rate for this species was 0.24 mm …
