Ecology And Behavior Of Maxillipius Commensalis, A Gorgonophile Amphipod From Madang, Papua New Guinea (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Maxillipiidae), James Darwin Thomas
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
Maxillipius commensalis Lowry, is reported as an ectocommensal on arborescent gorgonaceans from coral reefs at Madang, Papua New Guinea. The family is reviewed and the male of this species is described. In-situ behavior studies show the amphipods to crowd close together in large numbers on one side of a gorgonian stalk. The terminal articles of the sixth pereopods are greatly elongated and whip-like and are waved at the sides in a circular motion, possibly facilitating spacing or feeding. When disturbed, the amphipods react en masse as a coherent group rather than as individuals.

Listen . . . . To Your Heart, Lori K. Sebastian
Listen . . . . To Your Heart, Lori K. Sebastian
Theses and Graduate Projects
This thesis takes a rather unusual approach to leadership. lt may be the only MAL thesis that contains abstract colored drawings instead of charts or graphs. lt focuses on the internal development and experience perspective of my leadership journey which begins in my inner soul and spirit. I have openly shared the methods I have used and my experiences, as well as my findings, results and conclusions.
Moreover, this was definitely a journey of listening to my heart and allowing what was in my heart to come forth. Sometimes what came out was in words, but sometimes it was an …

Laundry As Ritual, Margo Mensing
Laundry As Ritual, Margo Mensing
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
Whenever I mention I am going to give a talk on laundry, almost every listener responds with a personal recollection. Susie Brandt, an artist whose work attends to the details and obsessions of daily life, was reminded of her Laundromat days in Chicago when she was a graduate student in the Fiber Department at The School of the Art Institute. In her neighborhood were many recent immigrants from Mexico. She noticed that they washed their clothes with the washers' lids open, swishing their hands in tandem with the agitators' motion. Was it disbelief in the power of the machine to …

Other Pile-Weavings From Safavid Iran - The Persian Velvets At Rosenborg, Carol Bier
Textile Research Works
Among Persian pile-weavings, the most famous are carpets produced in Safavid Iran connected with the Persian monarchy or with European royalty. These include the Habsburg hunting Carpet today in the Osterreichisches Museum for Anfewandte Kunst, Vienna, the Swedish royal carpet, and perhaps the Boston Hunting Carpet . A hunting carpet which may also be categorized as a "medallion carpet" is that in Milan at the Poldi Pezzoli; another celebrated medallion carpet is the Ardabil carpet in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London , with a companion in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. More numerous are the star medallion …

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database
Using the isolation of Mycobacterium bovis as the reference standard, this study evaluated the sensitivity, specificity and kappa statistic of gross pathology (abattoir postmortem inspection), histopathology, and parallel or series combinations of the two for the diagnosis of tuberculosis in 430 elk and red deer. Two histopathology interpretations were evaluated: histopathology I, where the presence of lesions compatible with tuberculosis was considered positive, and histopathology II, where lesions compatible with tuberculosis or a select group of additional possible diagnoses were considered positive. In the 73 animals from which M. bovis was isolated, gross lesions of tuberculosis were most often in …

Selection For Lean Growth In Terminal Sire Sheep To Produce Leaner Crossbred Progeny, R. M. Lewis, G. Simm, W. S. Dingwall, S. V. Murphy
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
A progeny test was designed to test whether genetic superiority for lean growth in terminal sires is expressed in their crossbred progeny when reared in a different environment. In each of 1986, 1987 and 1988, 22 Suffolk rams were chosen at the conclusion of an indoor, intensive performance testing regime on an index score that rated their propensity for lean growth, while constraining fat growth, at 150 days of age. Half of these rams had high index scores and half had low index scores. In each year, around 400 crossbred ewes were mated and the resulting lambs were finished on …

Ewe Fertility In The Star Accelerated Lambing System, R. M. Lewis, D. R. Notter, D. E. Hogue, B. H. Magee
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Effects of environmental factors such as ewe age, season of exposure, and time from lambing to exposure on fertility were evaluated using records on 1,084 Dorset ewes in the STAR accelerated lambing system. The STAR program consisted of five 30-d concurrent breeding and lambing periods per year beginning on January 1, March 15, May 27, August 8, and October 20. Fertility in the flock changed in a cyclic and predictable fashion during the year. Changes in prolificacy were less consistent but also tended to show cyclic variation. Matings that occurred within the typical breeding season (August, October, and January) were …
