Postnatal Development Of The Neural Retina In A South American Opossum: Monodelphis Domestica, Tracy L. Soltesz
Postnatal Development Of The Neural Retina In A South American Opossum: Monodelphis Domestica, Tracy L. Soltesz
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Postnatal retinal development was studied in a marsupial opossum, Monodelphis domestica using light microscopy and 3H-thymidine autoradiography. For the light microscopic study, opossum neonates at 1, 3, 7, 14, 21, 25 and 28 days of age were euthanized, fixed and processed into paraffin sections for hematoxylin and eosin staining. The distinct ganglion cell layer, first observed on postnatal day (P) 7, was separated from the outer neuroblasts by the inner plexiform layer. The neuroblast layer was divided into inner and outer nuclear layers on P25 by the presumptive outer plexiform layer, indicated by discrete intercellular spaces located between the nuclear …

G96-1276 Creep Feeding Growing Horses, Kathleen P. Anderson, Pete G. Gibbs
G96-1276 Creep Feeding Growing Horses, Kathleen P. Anderson, Pete G. Gibbs
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide discusses the benefits and implications of creep feeding horses during the growing period of development.
Creep feeding, providing a place where foals can eat without interference from the mare and other horses, should be used if foals are to grow at optimum rates. Creep feeders are used to provide a nutritionally balanced, digestible concentrate to young nursing foals before weaning. The practice of creep feeding serves to supply nutrients beyond what a foal receives from mare's milk. And, creep feeding minimizes foals' intake of broodmare feed which often lacks the concentrated amounts of protein and minerals relative to …

G96-1280 Drinking Water: Iron And Manganese, David L. Varner, Sharon Skipton, Delynn Hay, Paul J. Jasa
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide discusses recommended practices to manage iron and manganese in a domestic water supply. Iron and manganese are non-hazardous elements that can be a nuisance in a water supply. Iron and manganese are chemically similar and cause similar problems. Iron is the most frequent of the two contaminants in water supplies; manganese is typically found in iron-bearing water.

Leaving Elementary School With A Sense Of Order In Nature, William W. Cobern, Adrienne T. Gibson, Scott A. Underwood
Leaving Elementary School With A Sense Of Order In Nature, William W. Cobern, Adrienne T. Gibson, Scott A. Underwood
Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project
Ninth graders in Arizona high schools have just left their elementary, general science education and are at the start of more specialized secondary science education. They are beginning a course of study that will form the foundation for tertiary education and employment after high school graduation. The research asked, Who are these kids entering high school science courses? The researchers noted that one of the key objectives of elementary education is to foster in children the concept that nature is inherently orderly and thus amenable to scientific investigation. Since the concept of order or disorder is fundamental in one’s perception …

Dietary Overview Of Hemidactylus Turcicus With Possible Implications Of Food Partitioning, Daniel Saenz
Dietary Overview Of Hemidactylus Turcicus With Possible Implications Of Food Partitioning, Daniel Saenz
Faculty Publications
A stomach content analysis was conducted on Hemidactylus turcicus, the Mediterranean gecko, from 19 April 1990 to 15 October 1990, on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University, Nacogdoches, Texas. Geckos (N = 167) were placed into four size groups based on snout-vent-length (5 29 mm, 30-39 mm, 40-49 mm, and z 50 mm) and three microhabitat groups based on perch height (those occupying perch sites < 1.52 m, 2 1.52 m to 5 3.05 m, and > 3.05 m). Stomach contents were analyzed and sex, size, and microhabitat groups were compared using Schoener's percent overlap index. Volumetrically, the most important prey items taken were Orthoptera, Lepidoptera, and Isopoda. Geckos of …

Land Use Patterns In Relation To Lake Water Quality In The North Pond Watershed, Problems In Environmental Science Course (Biology 493), Colby College, Colby Environmental Assessment Team, Colby College
Colby College Watershed Study: East and North Ponds (2011, 1999, 1996, 1991)
Human activity within the watershed can greatly accelerate the eutrophication process by increasing the rate at which nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen enter the lake (Fernandez et al. 1992). Increased nutrient loading causes dramatic increases in algal populations resulting in algal blooms. Many New England lakes develop a greenish tint because of algal blooms during early summer or early fall. Populations of bacteria which feed on organic material rise because of increased food supply. Bacterial activity decreases the level of dissolved oxygen in the lake (Henderson-Seller and Markland, 1987). A sharp decrease in dissolved oxygen levels can cause massive …

Task Lll Report: Deficit Analysis, L. Ormsbee, J. Herman
KWRRI Research Reports
This report summarizes the water supply deficit results of Phase lll of the KWRRI Kentucky River Basin Water Supply Assessment Study commissioned by the Kentucky River Authority. The purpose of Phase lll is to quantify water supply in the Kentucky River Basin during a severe drought for the existing supply system/resources under current and projected demand forecasts. A quantification of the susceptibility of the basin to a severe drought is necessary for the Authority to properly develop a long-range water supply plan.
This is part 3 of a three part Assessment Study of the River basin water supply.
