Space-Based Genetic Cryoconservation Of Endangered Species, Michael Noah Mautner
Space-Based Genetic Cryoconservation Of Endangered Species, Michael Noah Mautner
Chemistry Publications
Genetic materials of endangered species must be maintained, for cryoconservation, permanently near liquid nitrogen temperatures below 77 K. Due to the instability of human institutions, permanent safety is best provided at storage sites that maintain passively the needed low temperatures, and provide barriers to access. The required conditions are available in permanently shaded polar lunar craters with equilibrium temperatures of 8 to 40 K, on the moons of Saturn, and unshielded storage satellites. A genetic depository can be incorporated readily into planned lunar programmes.

Multicultural Assessment in Counseling and Clinical Psychology
INTRODUCTION
The propriety of administering psychological tests standardized on nonminority, middle-class, and English-speaking populations to examinees who are not fluent in English or are from culturally or demographically diverse backgrounds has been a controversial topic for over five decades (Dana, 1993b; Olmedo, 1981). Although the controversy originally surrounded intelligence testing of Blacks, similar allegations of bias toward Hispanics have been raised in the context of personality testing and diagnostic evaluation, a topic which is our present focus. The prevailing view is that in the absence of empirical evidence to the contrary, standard mental health evaluation procedures are considered unbiased (e. …

Feeding Guilds Among Artificial-Reef Fishes In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Brian D. Nelson, Stephen A. Bortone
Feeding Guilds Among Artificial-Reef Fishes In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Brian D. Nelson, Stephen A. Bortone
Gulf of Mexico Science
To examine the diets of 25 demersal artificial-reef-associated fish species, 540 fishes were collected with spears and hand-nets off Panama City, Florida, in the summer of 1993. Fishes were preserved whole in the field. Stomach contents were later analyzed by frequency of occurrence, numerical abundance, and percent volume. These measures were combined into an Index of Relative Importance (IRI). The data set was then analyzed with cluster and detrended correspondence (DCA) analyses. Forage items of the reef fishes were dominated by fishes, xanthid crabs, unidentified items, squids, polychaetes, and penaeid shrimps. The DCA and cluster analysis revealed that these 25 …

Genome-Wide High-Resolution Mapping By Recurrent Intermating Using Arabidopsis Thaliana As A Model, Sin-Chieh Liu, Stanley Kowalski, Tien-Hung Lan, Kenneth A. Feldmann, Andrew H. Patterson
Law Faculty Scholarship
We demonstrate a method for developing populations suitable for genome-wide high-resolution genetic linkage mapping, by recurrent intermating among F2 individuals derived from crosses between homozygous parents. Comparison of intermated progenies to F2 and “recombinant inbred” (RI) populations from the same pedigree corroborate theoretical expectations that progenies intermated for four generations harbor about threefold more information for estimating recombination fraction between closely linked markers than either RI-selfed or F2 individuals (which are, in fact, equivalent in this regard) . Although intermated populations are heterozygous, homozygous “intermated recombinant inbred” (IN) populations can readily be generated, combining additional information afforded by intermating with …

Wiser Than Despair: The Evolution Of Ideas In The Relationship Of Music And The Christian Church, Quentin Faulkner
Wiser Than Despair: The Evolution Of Ideas In The Relationship Of Music And The Christian Church, Quentin Faulkner
Glenn Korff School of Music: Faculty Publications
The fact that human beings want to make music, as well as all other forms of art, is a given of human existence. Artistic expressions, however, are not isolated or autonomous. They are conditioned, among other things, by social and cultural factors, and these factors have a powerful influence in shaping any art form.
There is no more compelling example of a culture's power to condition art than the evolution of European art music during the Middle Ages under the influence of the Christian church and its theological stance with regard to the arts. The church's ideas about the purpose …

The Role Of Surface Characteristics In The Initial Adhesion Of Human Bone-Derived Cells On Ceramics, H. Zreiqat, O. C. Standard, T. Gengenbach, J. G. Steele, C. R. Howlett
Cells and Materials
The tissue/biomaterial interactions of three biomaterials of potential use in bone implants were studied in vitro. The mechanism of cell adherence to various ceramic substrata has been investigated by measurement of short term (90 minutes) cell attachment and spreading rate. We have determined the effect of two serum glycoproteins, fibronectin and vitronectin, on the adhesion of human bone derived cells (HBD-cells) cultured on three different types of ceramics {alumina (Al2O3), hydroxyapatite (HAP) and yttria-doped tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP)} . The attachment of HBD-cells to alumina and hydroxyapatite was approximately 60% of that to Y-TZP. Furthermore, …

The Influence Of A Fibrin-Coating Inside A Biodegradable Poly(Dl-Lactide-Ε-Caprolactone) Nerve Guide On Peripheral Nerve Regeneration, W. F. A. Den Dunnen, J. M. Schakenraad, B. Van Der Lei, A. J. Pennings, P. H. Robinson
Cells and Materials
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a fibrin-coating on the inner surface of a biodegradable poly(DL-lactide-E-caprolactone) nerve guide on the speed and quality of the nerve regeneration. The nerve regeneration and orientation of the nerve fibers, as well as the fibrous tissue formation were evaluated. On the short term, nerve regeneration was slightly faster in the non-coated nerve guide. After longer implantation periods (≥ 4 weeks), nerve regeneration in the fibrin-coated nerve guides was characterized by a severe inflammatory response with large numbers of macrophages and polymorphonuclear cells (PMN's). This study clearly demonstrates that nerve …
Collagen Fibres Are Not Required For Initial Matrix Mineralization By Bone Cells, M. M. Hosseini, S. A. F. Peel, J. E. Davies
Collagen Fibres Are Not Required For Initial Matrix Mineralization By Bone Cells, M. M. Hosseini, S. A. F. Peel, J. E. Davies
Cells and Materials
Passaged primary cultures of young adult rat bone marrow cells were maintained in medium containing combinations of the supplements dexamethasone, ascorbic acid and Na-ß-glycerophosphate. The cultures were examined by both light and scanning electron microscopy (with additional energy dispersive X-ray analysis). In cultures with fully supplemented medium, an extracellular matrix formed at the culture dish surface, beneath developing bone nodules; this matrix was mineralized but collagen-fibre free and corresponded to that which we have reported previously as the equivalent of the cement line in vivo. In selected samples this interfacial, cement line, matrix was analyzed by X-ray …
