Mobility Barriers And The Socially Differentiated Effects Of Food Marketing Liberalization In Madagascar, Christopher B. Barrett
Mobility Barriers And The Socially Differentiated Effects Of Food Marketing Liberalization In Madagascar, Christopher B. Barrett
Economic Research Institute Study Papers
Decontrol of commercial food marketing channels was widely expected to induce massive trader entry and engender more competitive, efficient markets in Africa. Despite strong empirical evidence of trader entry, enterprise expansion is proving difficult and many market observers and participants claim market power continues, ifperhaps exercised now by private traders instead of public enterprises. This paper uses the industrial organization concept of mobility barriers to confront this puzzle of substantial market entry that might not enliven market competition. Primary data from a survey of food marketing intermediaries in Madagascar reveal distinct groups within rural food marketing channels, separated by identifiable …

How Long Until Crisis In African Wildlife Integrated Conservation And Development Projects (Icdps)? Simulation Results From The Serengeti Ecosystem, Christopher B. Barrett, Peter Arcese
Economic Research Institute Study Papers
This paper develops a model coupling species population dynamics with endogenous human consumption and poaching behavior in an environment of imperfect labor and product markets and static agricultural production technology subject to environmental shocks. Using the case of the Serengeti, we then simulate how integrated conservation and development projects (lCDPs) might effectively serve as a delaying tactic against biodiversity loss until a more durable solution can be found to the challenge of wildlife conservation lin the midst of endemic rural poverty.

Factors Affecting Interannual Movements Of Snowy Plovers, Peter W. C. Paton, Thomas C. Edwards Jr.
Factors Affecting Interannual Movements Of Snowy Plovers, Peter W. C. Paton, Thomas C. Edwards Jr.
Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications
We studied the interannual movements of 361 individually color-banded adult Snowy Plovers (Charadrius alexandrinus nivosus) at Great Salt Lake, Utah from 1990 to 1993. In northern Utah, Snowy Plovers nested in a dynamic environment; suitable breeding habitat declined by 50% at two study areas in four years. Male Snowy Plovers were more site faithful than females; 40% of males exhibited fidelity compared with 26% of females (P < 0.01). However, as the amount of available suitable nesting habitat declined, male site fidelity diminished, whereas female fidelity remained relatively constant. We found strong evidence that female site fidelity was affected by nesting success in the previous year. Females that nested unsuccessfully were less likely than successful females to exhibit site fidelity the following year; males did not exhibit this nest-success bias. In addition, unsuccessful females breeding at sites with high densities of nests tended to disperse the following year, whereas male site fidelity did not appear to be affected by either a study site's overall nesting success the previous year or a study site's nest density the previous year. Female avoidance of areas with high densities of nests may be an antipredator strategy. Snowy Plovers in northern Utah have biparental incubation duties, but only males care for broods. Familiarity with brood-rearing areas was one plausible explanation for male-biased fidelity. However, we could not eliminate an alternative hypothesis that both focal study sites represented scarce breeding areas due to the presence of freshwater, and male Snowy Plovers preferred to use the same areas rather than disperse. We propose that more landscape-level studies are needed to address questions concerning local and regional movement patterns.

Purification And Characterization Of Diacylglycerol Pyrophosphate Phosphatase From Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Wen-I Wu, Yongsheng Liu, Bettina Riedel, Josef B. Wissing, Anthony S. Fischl, George M. Carman
Past Departments Faculty Publications (College of Health Sciences)
Diacylglycerol pyrophosphate (DGPP) phosphatase is a novel membrane-associated enzyme that catalyzes the dephosphorylation of the β phosphate of DGPP to yield phosphatidate and P. DGPP phosphatase was purified 33,333-fold from Saccharomyces cerevisiae by a procedure that included Triton X-100 solubilization of microsomal membranes followed by chromatography with DE53, Affi-Gel Blue, hydroxylapatite, and Mono Q. The procedure resulted in the isolation of an apparent homogeneous protein with a subunit molecular mass of 34 kDa. DGPP phosphatase activity was associated with the 34-kDa protein. DGPP phosphatase had a broad pH optimum between 6.0 and 8.5 and was dependent on Triton X-100 for …
A Backwards Binding Construction In Zapotec, Cheryl A. Black
A Backwards Binding Construction In Zapotec, Cheryl A. Black
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
Many of the Zapotecan languages have a unique way of signalling coreference between the subject and the possessor of the object: the subject is null. Such a construction is upsidedown or backwards from commonly described anaphora constructions and its analysis is therefore problematic to current theories. This paper describes the construction and underlines the theoretical problem by arguing against any obvious alternative analyses. An analysis is proposed where it is the tail (rather than the head) of the chain of coreferent elements that is identified, suggesting that this is another place where parameterization is needed.
Collective Humanitarian Intervention, Fernando R. Tesón
Collective Humanitarian Intervention, Fernando R. Tesón
Scholarly Publications
Until very recently, those who favored the legitimacy of humanitarian intervention were regarded either as hopeless idealists, or worse still, as trigger-happy "moral imperialists." Yet, the doctrine of humanitarian intervention has experienced a dramatic revival with the end of the Cold War. The realignment of global political forces and the awareness of the crucial link between human rights and peace have produced a significant change of opinion among governments and writers on the subject. While opinion is still sharply divided on the issue of unilateral humanitarian intervention, most international actors and observers are rallying behind the idea that the United …

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center
We have designed a collaborative scientific visualization package that will aid researchers from distant, diverse locations to work together in developing scientific codes, providing them with a system to analyze their scientific data. We have utilized Java to develop this infrastructure. Two important areas which we have concentrated on developing are 1) a collaborative framework from which the scientific data is interpreted and utilized, and 2) a framework, which is customizable to the suit the needs of a particular task and/or scientific group.

This cookbook, published in 1996, grew out of the annual Taste of Columbia events held to raise scholarship funds for students living in the first residence hall on the South Loop campus that opened in 1993. The residence hall had apartment style spaces with kitchens and since "students need to eat and sleep before they can study" this book was produced to make sure students ate more than vending machine meals. The resulting cookbook contains recipes compiled from students, faculty, staff, alumni, trustees, friends, and others in the Columbia College Chicago community. The cookbook contents include recipes for appetizers, breads, …
Truncated Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia Coli (Ehec) O157:H7 Intimin (Eaea) Fusion Proteins Promote Adherence Of Ehec Strains To Hep-2 Cells, Marian L. Mckee, Alison D. O'Brien
Truncated Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia Coli (Ehec) O157:H7 Intimin (Eaea) Fusion Proteins Promote Adherence Of Ehec Strains To Hep-2 Cells, Marian L. Mckee, Alison D. O'Brien
Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences
Intimin, the product of the eaeA gene in enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157:H7 (EHEC), is required for intimate adherence of these organisms to tissue culture cells and formation of the attaching and effacing lesion in the gnotobiotic pig. Because of the importance of intimin in the pathogenesis of EHEC O157:H7 infection in this animal model, we began a structure-function analysis of EaeA. For this purpose, we constructed amino-terminal fusions of the intimin protein with six histidine residues to form two independent fusions. The longer fusion, RIHisEae, contained 900 of the 935 predicted amino acids and included all but the extreme amino …

Ec96-764 Teaching Farm & Ranch Safety: Multi-Disciplinary Activities For Elementary Students
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
You've heard the stories. Perhaps you've even experienced one first-hand. Each year in the United States, about 300 kids are killed in agricultural accidents, and at least 5,000 more are seriously injured. Education is a valuable tool in reducing these frightening numbers.
This Teacher's Guide is targeted toward elementary students (Grades 4-6), and contains background information to help you implement the accompanying student activities. If you do not have an agricultural background, some of this information will be new to you. Even if you live or have grown up on a farm or ranch, you may learn something new from …

G96-1278 Use Of Cooled Stallion Semen, Kathleen P. Anderson
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide discusses the benefits of using cooled stallion semen for horse breeding.
Using cooled, transported stallion semen is quickly becoming a viable breeding option for many horse producers. An increasing number of breed associations are recognizing the benefits of cooled semen and making it an option for producers. Mare owner's who are able to use cooled semen experience less expense related to breeding, if the program is properly conducted. Transporting cooled semen from the stud farm to the mare allows owners to reduce mare care and transportation costs. Furthermore, because the mare will remain on-the-farm, there is less chance …
