About The Cellular Tropism Of The Gammaherpesvirus Bovine Herpesvirus Type 4, Fernando A. Osorio, J. A. Galeota-Wheeler, D. E. Reed, O. Lopez

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

We read with interest the recent report by Egyed et al. (4) about the distribution in tissue, in the natural host, of bovine herpesvirus type 4 (BHV-4), a member of the gammaherpesvirus group. Using PCR, those authors were able to trace BHV-4 (Movar strain) in several tissues of experimentally infected cattle (mostly spleen, lung, trachea, and nasal epithelium tissues) at different times, ranging from 3 to 48 days postinfection. The authors also report consistent detection of BHV-4 DNA in what they consider to be a pure population of lymphocytes obtained from peripheral blood of the BHV-4- infected cattle, and then …

Evaluation Of Carcinogenic Potential Of Benzo(Α)Pyrene And Dimethylbenzanthracene In Mouse Leukemic Cells, Mohammad Sharif Sultan Al Ulama Dec 1996

Evaluation Of Carcinogenic Potential Of Benzo(Α)Pyrene And Dimethylbenzanthracene In Mouse Leukemic Cells, Mohammad Sharif Sultan Al Ulama

Theses

The carcinogenic potential of benzo[α]pyrene (B(α)P) and dimethylbenzanthracene (DMBA) was tested using mouse leukemic cell lines L-5178 R and S types in tissue culture condition. It was found that B(α)P and DMBA inhibited the synthesis of DNA of R and S types of cells to about 34%, at 10 mM concentration. While B(α)P and DMBA did not show any acute toxic effect on mouse cell line Rand S types at 1 mM concentration separately. Both R and S types of cells were allowed to grow for several days in the presence of 1 mM DMBA and B(α)P respectively. Several independent …

Barriers To Adopting Sustainable Agricultural Practices, Daniel Drost, Gilbert Long, David Wilson, Bruce Miller Dec 1996

Barriers To Adopting Sustainable Agricultural Practices, Daniel Drost, Gilbert Long, David Wilson, Bruce Miller

Journal of Extension

Land management practices used by and attitudes toward change to sustainable practices by Utah farmers and ranchers are described. A questionnaire was sent to 964 farmers. Despite the apparent use of sustainable practices by farmers, the majority stated that economic factors, availability of information, and Federal farm programs were primary constraints limiting adoption of sustainable practices. Without a greater effort by Cooperative Extension, sustainable agriculture practices may not be adopted by Utah farmers and ranchers. It is believed that extra effort is needed to focus on specific groups of farmers to help transfer information about sustainable farming practices.

The Threshold Value Of A Quality Index For Formation Of Cellular Manufacturing Systems, Hamid Seifoddini, Manocher Djassemi Dec 1996

The Threshold Value Of A Quality Index For Formation Of Cellular Manufacturing Systems, Hamid Seifoddini, Manocher Djassemi

Industrial Technology and Packaging

The superiority of cellular manufacturing to job shop manufacturing has been questioned by a number of simulation studies. The initial structure of the machine-part matrix seems to play an important role in the failure of cellular manufacturing systems in these studies. In this paper a grouping measure called 'quality index - QI' will be used to evaluate the relationship between the quality of a machine-part matrix and the performance of the corresponding cellular manufacturing system. A simulation study will be conducted to demonstrate how the procedure can be used to determine the threshold value for QI beyond which the cellular …

Graphical Display Of A Missile Endgame Scenario, Joseph E. Moritz Dec 1996

Graphical Display Of A Missile Endgame Scenario, Joseph E. Moritz

Theses and Dissertations

Traditionally, computer programs to model and simulate air-to-air missile endgame engagements have focused on improving the underlying probability of kill models. This focus, however, understates the benefits of current computer graphics technology for visualization and direct manipulation of missile endgame parameters and building engagement understanding through real-time, three dimensional simulation of the endgame. Our research has been to develop a versatile simulation system to display the missile endgame parameters and allow graphical interaction with these parameters. This program also allows the user to view animated engagements of previously designed endgames. The current project scope is to provide user feedback of …

An Incremental Language Conversion Method To Convert C++ Into Ada95, Ding-Yuan Sheu Dec 1996

An Incremental Language Conversion Method To Convert C++ Into Ada95, Ding-Yuan Sheu

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis develops a methodology to incrementally convert a legacy object oriented C++ application into Ada95. Using the experience of converting a graphic application, called Remote Debriefing Tool (RDT), in the Graphics Lab of the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), this effort defined a process to convert a C++ application into Ada95. The methodology consists of five phases: (1) reorganizing the software application, (2) breaking mutual dependencies, (3) creating package specifications to interface the existing C++ classes, (4) converting C++ code into Ada programs, and (5) embellishing. This methodology used the GNAT's C++ low level interface capabilities to support …

Subregional Planning In The San Francisco Bay Area: Tri-Valley Subregional Planning Strategy, Hing Wong Dec 1996

Subregional Planning In The San Francisco Bay Area: Tri-Valley Subregional Planning Strategy, Hing Wong

Master's Projects

Many people in the San Francisco Bay Area have noticed that their quality of life has deteriorated in recent years. Citizens are becoming increasingly aware of problems such as traffic congestion; cost and supply of housing; loss of open space and agricultural land; environmental concerns; deterioration of infrastructure; and economic uncertainties.

All of these problems have significant effects on the physical and social welfare of our communities. Many of them are interrelated, and the result of haphazard regional growth patterns. The real dilemma is not that these conditions exist, but that they are largely unresolvable by our present structure of …

The Persistent Nation State And The Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act, Mark L. Movsesian Dec 1996

The Persistent Nation State And The Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act, Mark L. Movsesian

Cardozo Law Review

One hears a great deal these days about the decline of the nation state. The concept of a sovereign country whose inhabitants share a common ancestry or culture is said to be obsolescent, if not already obsolete. Several factors, apparently, are responsible: the creation of supranational institutions like the European Union and the World Trade Organization; the growing influence of nongovernmental organizations; the emergence of a new global economy; and the formation of a worldwide consumer culture, to name just a few. The law, it is argued, must adapt.

Evaluation Of A Regional Traffic Safety Improvement Program, Kenneth R. Agent Dec 1996

Evaluation Of A Regional Traffic Safety Improvement Program, Kenneth R. Agent

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The objectives of this report were to document the activities and evaluate the effectiveness of a regional traffic safety improvement program in the Green River Area Development District (GRADD). This is a seven county region in western Kentucky. The goals of the program were to reduce the numbers of motor vehicle fatalities and injuries, to increase safety belt usage, and to increase public awareness of the effects of alcohol-related and high speed driving in rural areas.

A full-time employee was hired by GRADD to manage the program. A Citizen Advisory Board (CAB) was established in each county. Each CAB formulated …

A Voice From The Fire: The Authority Of Experience, Colleen C. Bernhard Dec 1996

A Voice From The Fire: The Authority Of Experience, Colleen C. Bernhard

Theses and Dissertations

Over all, this thesis was written to be a "ramble" of its own around and through three issues that are central to the writing of the personal essay-voice, authority, and experience-and central to the emergence of this author's own sense of "self."
Drawing upon years of voluminous journals, this collection of six personal essays demonstrates what the scholarly introduction proposes: that the personal essay is both a valid genre and a magnificent bridge from informal life-writing to genuine literary accomplishment. Drawing on Phillip Lopate's differentiation of "memoiristic" essays from the more classic autobiographical form, this collection includes three of each …

The Decline Of The Western Nation State And The Rise Of The Regime Of International Federalism, John O. Mcginnis Dec 1996

The Decline Of The Western Nation State And The Rise Of The Regime Of International Federalism, John O. Mcginnis

Cardozo Law Review

The nation state is in decline, at least among the Western industrialized nations. Decline is a relative term. It does not suggest that the nation state has disappeared, but rather, that it is no longer as defining a feature of geopolitics as it once was, and will likely remain a less controlling feature. In the West, the era of the nation state was characterized by entities that approximated, even if they never attained, absolute control over their territory. First, the nation state had substantial control over economic affairs within its borders. While the world has always been to some extent …

“Economic” Issues And Political Participation: The Evolving Boundaries Of International Federalism, Kenneth W. Abbott Dec 1996

“Economic” Issues And Political Participation: The Evolving Boundaries Of International Federalism, Kenneth W. Abbott

Cardozo Law Review

John McGinnis has framed the issues in this symposium with a provocative paper on the "regime of international federalism." Though it draws on bits of sociobiology, history, political philosophy, and other fields, the heart of McGinnis's article is a structural analysis of Western economic and political institutions.

Fugitives And Agrarians In A World Without Frontiers, Jim Chen Dec 1996

Fugitives And Agrarians In A World Without Frontiers, Jim Chen

Cardozo Law Review

Rien de grand avant l'tat. Let the French have their Colbertisme; Americans hold steadfast their faith in constitutionalism, the unofficial civic religion of the United States. Implicit in originalism, the most rigidly orthodox variant of America's constitutional faith is the belief that the legal world began with the framing of the Constitution. "All things created before me were not eternal": with the Constitution as creation, the American legal imagination need not embrace anything that occurred before 1787.

Des Third-Generation Liability: A Proximate Cause, Tracey I. Batt Dec 1996

Des Third-Generation Liability: A Proximate Cause, Tracey I. Batt

Cardozo Law Review

The drug DES has been associated with multigenerational injuries. Although courts in a number of states have allowed many second-generation DES victims to recover from the drug's manufacturers, this remedy, to date, has not been extended to thirdgeneration DES casualties. A number of reasons have been cited for this refusal, but the fear of requiring a drug manufacturer to be perpetually liable to descendants of those who ingested DES as well as the tricky issue of proximate causation predominate. This Note argues that at least some third-generation DES victims could (and should) be allowed to recover, without changing any laws …

Three-Dimensional Display Utilizing A Diffractive Optical Element And An Active Matrix Liquid Crystal Display, Gregory P. Nordin, M. W. Jones, S. T. Kowel, J. H. Kulick, R. G. Lindquist Dec 1996

Three-Dimensional Display Utilizing A Diffractive Optical Element And An Active Matrix Liquid Crystal Display, Gregory P. Nordin, M. W. Jones, S. T. Kowel, J. H. Kulick, R. G. Lindquist

Faculty Publications

We describe the design, construction, and performance of the first real-time autostereoscopic three-dimensional (3-D) display based on the partial pixel 3-D display architecture. The primary optical components of the 3-D display are an active-matrix liquid crystal display and a diffractive optical element (DOE). The display operates at video frame rates and is driven with a conventional VGA signal. Three-dimensional animations with horizontal motion parallax are readily viewable as sets of stereo images. Formation of the virtual viewing slits by diffraction from the partial pixel apertures is experimentally verified. The measured contrast and perceived brightness of the display are excellent, but …

The Mmpi-A: A Diagnostic Tool For Adhd Adolescents, Harry J. Marshall Dec 1996

The Mmpi-A: A Diagnostic Tool For Adhd Adolescents, Harry J. Marshall

Dissertations

This research investigated the utility of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-Adolescent (MMPI-A) as an instrument in the diagnosis of adolescents with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Subjects were 32 male and 12 female adolescents between the ages of 14 and 18 who presented for evaluation and/or treatment for ADHD in one of three privately operated mental health clinics in a large, industrial, midwestem state. Upon establishment of the diagnosis by a psychologist who specializes in the area of ADHD, the subjects were invited to participate in the study and complete the MMPI-A. A correlational research design was used which compared …

Statistical Graphics: Applications To The R And Gr Methods In Linear Models, Mei Huang Wang Dec 1996

Statistical Graphics: Applications To The R And Gr Methods In Linear Models, Mei Huang Wang

Dissertations

Statistical graphics combine statistics and graphics together to visually display analytical statistical results. They present information in a way that is very easy to understand and, furthermore, they frequently reveal information that is hidden from numerical summaries. Our purpose of this study is to explore the field of statistical graphics by investigating their application to statistical methods in the context of the R and GR methods in linear models. We consider the problems of score selection, R-diagnostics, and comparison of the R- and GR-fits.

We have developed a user friendly program which uses dynamic graphics and a user interface to …

The Anchor, Volume 110.12: November 27, 1996, Hope College

The Anchor: 1996

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.
