Angiogenesis In The Gonadal Capillary Network Of The Chick Embryo, F. J. Pérez-Aparicio, A. Carretero, M. Navarro, J. Ruberte

Scanning Microscopy

Seventy-one chick embryos of both sexes at the 35 Hamburger and Hamilton (H-H) developmental stage were processed for scanning electron microscopy of vascular corrosion casts and of critical point dried specimens, as well as transmission electron- and light microscopy, in order to study the angiogenic structures. The gonadal subepithelial capillary network was located at the level of the tunica albuginea under the covering epithelium. The casts showed a densely-meshed capillary network and numerous sprouting (nodular protrusions or capillary sprouts) and non-sprouting (enlarged vessels and angiogenic holes) angiogenic structures that were randomly distributed and mixed. Four types of angio-genic holes were …

Effects Of Migratory Geese On Nitrogen Availability And Primary Productivity In Subarctic Barley Fields, Jennifer Adrienne Pugin Apr 1996

Effects Of Migratory Geese On Nitrogen Availability And Primary Productivity In Subarctic Barley Fields, Jennifer Adrienne Pugin

Theses (Unassigned)

Agricultural areas are important for migratory geese, providing easy access to high energy foods. Geese affect agricultural production by removing biomass and by depositing fecal nutrients. This study used $\sp{15}$N as a tracer to examine the quantitative effects of fecal nitrogen contributions on agricultural production.

During winter 1994-95, 12-week lab incubations were conducted to determine net nitrogen and carbon mineralization potentials in soils amended with barley straw, grain, and goose feces. The greatest rates of nitrogen mineralization occurred in the soil amended with goose feces. Carbon mineralization occurred at the greatest rate in the soil amended with grain.

In comparison …

Foraging Ecology Of Female Dall's Sheep In The Brooks Range, Alaska, Michael Charles Hansen Apr 1996

Foraging Ecology Of Female Dall's Sheep In The Brooks Range, Alaska, Michael Charles Hansen

Theses (Unassigned)

Most wild sheep (Ovis) are primarily diurnal. Thus, extreme cold, darkness, and limited quantities of low-quality forage during long winters above the Arctic Circle present a formidable challenge for sheep. Further, summer is particularly short at these high latitudes, providing little time for sheep to accumulate energy reserves for winter. This thesis discusses dietary and behavioral responses of wild sheep to the constraints of Arctic environments. Specifically, I determined diet composition and selection, forage quality, nutrient intake, and activity budgets of adult female Dall's sheep (ewes) (Ovis dalli dalli) near the northern extreme of the range of wild sheep for …

Stalking The Schoolwork Module: Teaching Prospective Teachers To Write Historical Narratives, G. Williamson Mcdiarmid, P. Vinten-Johansen Apr 1996

Stalking The Schoolwork Module: Teaching Prospective Teachers To Write Historical Narratives, G. Williamson Mcdiarmid, P. Vinten-Johansen

ISER Reports

Few educational slogans have had more play over the last decade than “writing to learn”. The idea is intuitively appealing: that in striving to summarize, organize, synthesize, develop, and communicate ideas and information, we must, in the process, clarify and extend our own understandings. Many have championed the “writing to learn” cause. In the study described below, the first author, Vinten-Johansen, engaged his undergraduates, all of whom planned to teach, in a structured process of writing historical narratives. His purpose was to help them learn not only to make historical arguments in writing—a capacity that has applications far beyond academic …

Seismicity Analysis: New Techniques And Case Studies, Stefan Wiemer Apr 1996

Seismicity Analysis: New Techniques And Case Studies, Stefan Wiemer

Geosciences

Seismicity parameters can be visualized as an almost continuous function of space and time by using dense grids. This mapping technique is used to: (1) Study the seismic quiescence preceding the 1992 Landers earthquake sequence. Both the Landers and Big Bear earthquake were found to be preceded by periods of significant seismic quiescence lasting 2-4 years. (2) Image the frequency-magnitude distribution in the subducting slab underneath Alaska and New Zealand. A high b-value anomaly at 100 km depth on the top of the slab suggests that slab dehydration causes an increase in the pore pressure. (3) Investigate the plumbing system …
