The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The treatment of Fasciola gigantica infection with Bithionol sulfoxide was investigated in sheep that had been experimentally infected with 500 metacercariae. Ten sheep were divided into 3 groups: group 1 (n=4) were given a single dose of Bithionol sulfoxide 80 mg/kg orally at week 22 after infection, group 2 (n=4) were untreated positive controls and group 3 (n=3) were untreated negative controls. All animals were examined for Fasciola eggs per gram (epg) in faeces for the beads technique at weekly interval for a period of 28 weeks. The egg during weeks 22-23 were examined daily. The results revealed that on …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Serum and plasma cholinesterase in normal animals were determined concurrently to see whether both values can be used interchangeably. Plasma, with EDTA as an anticoagulant and serum of horses, donkeys, mules, cattle, buffaloes and sheep were collected and cholinesterase activity was determined by colorimetric method. Results showed that plasma cholinesterase activity in all species except cattle was significantly lower than the activity in serum. Since organophosphorus compounds have cholinesterase inhibition property, the use of inhibited plasma cholinesterase as an indicator for organophosphorus poison is questionable and the use of serum cholinesterase activity is recommended.(วิเคราะห์การทำงานของเอนไซม์โซลีนเอสเทอเรสในพลาสม่าและซีรั่มของสัตว์ปกติเปรียบเทียบในสัตว์ตัวเดียวกันเพื่อศึกษาว่าค่าทั้งสองนี้สามารถใช้แทนกันได้หรือไม่ ทำการเจาะเลือดจากสัตว์ 6 ชนิด ได้แก่ ม้า ลา …

Hepatic Cytochromes P450 Enzyme Activities Of Uae Coastal Rabbit Safi Fish Siganus Canaliculatus, Amna Mana Al-Otaiba Jun 1996

Hepatic Cytochromes P450 Enzyme Activities Of Uae Coastal Rabbit Safi Fish Siganus Canaliculatus, Amna Mana Al-Otaiba

Theses

The cytochrome P450 dependent metabolism of benzo(a)pyrene and other xenobiotics has been investigated in liver microsomes prepared from a local marine Safi fish Siganus canaliculatus caught from the Arabian Gulf of United Arab Emirates. The Safi fish was found to have a well developed liver microsomal monooxygenase system consisting of cytochrome P450, cytochrome b5 and NADPH-cytochrome c reductase. The fish microsomal enzyme system was able to metabolise benzo(a)pyrene, 7-ethoxycoumarin and 7- ethoxyresorufin. Male fish were found to exhibit a higher monooxygenase activity than female fish. Treatment of fish with β-naphthoflavone was found to induce (2-4 fold) the activities of aryl …

Il-10 Is Necessary And Sufficient For Autoimmune Diabetes In Conjunction With Nod Mhc Homozygosity., Myung-Shik Lee, Regula Mueller, Linda S. Wicker, Laurence B. Peterson, Nora Sarvetnick

Journal Articles: Regenerative Medicine

Contrary to expectations based on in vitro experiments, we previously found that pancreatic IL-10 did not inhibit autoimmune diabetes but accelerated it in an MHC-dependent manner. Therefore, the ability of IL-10 to overcome the absence of all non-MHC diabetes susceptibility (Idd) alleles was studied in transgenic mice expressing pancreatic IL-10 backcrossed to B10.H2g7 congenic mice, which have no Idd alleles other than NOD MHC (H2g7). IL-10 transgenic backcross 1 (BC1) mice with H2g7/g7 haplotype developed clear-cut insulitis and diabetes, but neither transgenic mice with the H2g/b haplotype nor nontransgenic BC1 mice did so. Further implicating IL-10 in autoimmune diabetes, anti-IL-10 …

The Latency-Related Gene Of Bovine Herpesvirus 1 Encodes A Product Which Inhibits Cell Cycle Progression, L. M. Schang, Ashfaque Hossain, Clinton J. Jones Jun 1996

The Latency-Related Gene Of Bovine Herpesvirus 1 Encodes A Product Which Inhibits Cell Cycle Progression, L. M. Schang, Ashfaque Hossain, Clinton J. Jones

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) establishes a latent infection in the sensory ganglionic neurons of cattle. The exclusive viral RNA expressed in a latent infection is the latency-related (LR) RNA, suggesting that it regulates some aspect of a latent infection. During the course of a productive infection, alphaherpesviruses induce certain events which occur during cell cycle progression. Consequently, we hypothesized that a BHV-1 infection might induce events in neurons which occur during cell cycle progression. In agreement with this hypothesis, cyclin A was detected in neurons of trigeminal ganglia when rabbits were infected. Neuronal cell cycle progression or inappropriate expression of …

A Survey Of The Coccidian Parasites Of Reptiles From Islands Of The Galápagos Archipelago: 1990-1994, Lee Couch, Paul A. Stone, Donald W. Duszynski, Howard L. Snell, Heidi M. Snell Jun 1996

A Survey Of The Coccidian Parasites Of Reptiles From Islands Of The Galápagos Archipelago: 1990-1994, Lee Couch, Paul A. Stone, Donald W. Duszynski, Howard L. Snell, Heidi M. Snell

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

From 1990 through 1994, fecal samples were collected and examined for coccidian parasites from 26 giant land tortoises Geochelone nigra, from 715 lava lizards Tropidurus spp., from 139 land iguanas Conolophus subcristatus, and from 128 marine iguanas Amblyrhynchus cristatus, all of which inhabit various islands in the Galápagos Archipelago. None of the samples from A. cristatus or from C. subcristatus was infected with coccidia. Only 1 of 26 (4%) G. nigra was infected with a single Eimeria species that we describe here as new. A total of 262 of 715 (37%) individuals representing 3 species of Tropidurus …

An Assessment Of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder And Psychology And Physical Health Comorbidity Among Law Enforcement Officers, Terri L. Belville Jun 1996

An Assessment Of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder And Psychology And Physical Health Comorbidity Among Law Enforcement Officers, Terri L. Belville

Masters Theses

A qualitative survey was employed to gather descriptive information on Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and collateral psychological and physical health conditions among law enforcement officers. Three diagnostic assessment instruments for PTSD were utilized including a self-report traumatic stress questionnaire to screen for PTSD, as well as provide information on the range of personal and on-the-job traumatic events experienced by officers. At a structured clinical follow-up interview the C-DIS-R and MCMI-III were used to verify a diagnosis of PTSD and establish psychological comorbidity on Axis I and Il, respectively. A self-report physical health questionnaire was also used to assess for physical …

Some Aspects Of The Evolution Of The Medieval Tournament Up To The Reign Of Maximilian I: An Introduction, Kathryn L. Woodruff Jun 1996

Some Aspects Of The Evolution Of The Medieval Tournament Up To The Reign Of Maximilian I: An Introduction, Kathryn L. Woodruff

Masters Theses

An introductory exploration of the evolution of the medieval tournament up to the reign of Emperor Maximilian I (1459-1519) is the subject of this study. This exploration begins with the eleventh-century origins of the tournament in northern France as a military training exercise and continues with a discussion of the evolution of the tournament, by the sixteenth century, into a sporting event and public spectacle with a number of variations including the melee, behourd, round table, and passage of arms.

Some of the influences of the Church and of chivalric literature upon the tournament and upon the knightly class …

Application Of Tube Settlers In Secondary Wastewater Treatment, Abdulsalam Mohamed Saleh Kamalpoor Jun 1996

Application Of Tube Settlers In Secondary Wastewater Treatment, Abdulsalam Mohamed Saleh Kamalpoor

Theses

Secondary sedimentation is one of the most commonly used unit operations in wastewater treatment plants. It is customary designed to achieve solids separation from biologically treated effluent through clarification of biological solids and thickening of sludge. As treatment plants receive increasingly high wastewater flow, conventional sedimentation tanks suffer from overloading problems which result in poor performance. Inclined plate settlers, a form of tube settlers, may have good potential in upgrading sedimentation tanks. This study was conducted to examine the possibility of applying inclined plate settlers in secondary sedimentation in order to upgrade conventional rectangular sedimentation tanks and improve their performance. …
