Immunization Against Growth Hormone Releasing Factor Or Chronic Feed Restriction Initiated At 3.5 Months Of Age Reduces Ovarian Response To Pulsatile Administration Of Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone At 6 Months Of Age And Delays Onset Of Puberty In Heifers, P. D. Schoppee, Jeffrey D. Armstrong, R. W. Harvey, M. D. Whitacre, A. Felix, R. M. Campbell

Office of the President Scholarship

A severe or moderate suppression of serum insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) was induced in heifers, beginning at 104 days of age, by active immunization against growth hormone-releasing factor (GRFi) or by chronic feed restriction (RES), respectively. We hypothesized that reduced serum IGF-I results in decreased serum estradiol-17 beta (E2), which in turn delays onset of puberty. The objectives of this experiment were to determine 1) whether GRFi and RES would alter follicular development and delay onset of puberty through similar mechanisms, and 2) whether GnRH would enhance follicular growth in control, GRFi, and RES heifers at 6 mo of …

The Use Of Prior Knowledge In Learning From Examples, Stephen B. Blessing '89 Jul 1996

The Use Of Prior Knowledge In Learning From Examples, Stephen B. Blessing '89

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines the way people acquire procedures from examples, and provides a computational model of the results. In four experiments, people learned an analog of algebra. For each experiment, the initial know ledge that people had of the task was varied. In two experiments (Experiments 1 and 3), the syntactic know ledge that people had concerning the task w as manipulated. The knowledge of syntax that participants had, particularly the ability to correctly parse the character string, was found to be a major determiner in the way participants acquired the rules. Experiment 2 explicitly manipulated participant's awareness as to …

Habitat Sampling And Habitat Selection By Female Wild Turkeys: Ecological Correlates And Reproductive Consequences, A. V. Badyaev, Thomas E. Martin, W. J. Etges

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

Habitat sampling can allow much more effective habitat selection for longterm activities such as nesting and may be directly linked to fitness. We studied the process of habitat sampling and selection in female Wild Turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) in the Arkansas Ozarks. In particular, we tested the prediction that movements prior to selecting nesting habitat correlate with the quality of selected habitat. Our results supported the prediction that greater habitat sampling (as reflected by greater area covered prior to nesting) allows acquisition of better nesting habitat; greater movements were correlated with choice of better nesting sites with more cover that allow …

The Endangered Species Act (ESA) has re~ r d .. . , at deal of press in recent months, much of it n~gativ'--· following legislation proposed by Rep'.,~()•1ti~h, Alaksa) in September, 1995. His legislation essentially renders the ESA useless, by overruling definition of "taking," requiring federal agencies to pay off aggrevied landowners, and making protection on private lands voluntary. The earlier momentum of the bill has slowed considerably, as Republican leaders, including House Speaker Newt Gingrich, realize that the American public does not want to see hundreds of endangered species disappear forever.

Fisheries Research Report No 105 - The Western Rock Lobster Fishery 1986/87 To 1990/91, C. F. Chubb, E. H. Barker, R. S. Brown

Fisheries Research Reports

This report on the western rock lobster (Panulirus cygnus, George 1962) fishery covers the five seasons 1986/87 to 1990/91 and is the latest in a series of reports on the State's largest and most valuable fishery. While more detailed data bases exist, these reports form a historical record of basic data for use by both industry and research workers, now and in the future. Catch and fishing effort in the seasons (1986/87 to 1990/91) varied between 8500 and 12300 tonnes and 11.3 and 12.8 million pot lifts respectively. This report provides detail on the distribution of catches and fishing effort; …

Differential Expression Of The Toxr Regulon In Classical And E1 Tor Biotypes Of Vibrio Cholerae Is Due To Biotype-Specific Control Over Toxt Expression., Victor J. Dirita, Melody Neely, Ronald K. Taylor, Paul M. Bruss

Dartmouth Scholarship

The two major disease-causing biotypes of Vibrio cholerae, classical and El Tor, exhibit differences in their epidemic nature. Their behavior in the laboratory also differs in that El Tor strains produce two major virulence factors, cholera toxin (CT) and the toxin coregulated pilus (TCP), only under very restricted growth conditions, whereas classical strains do so in standard laboratory medium. Expression of toxin and TCP is controlled by two activator proteins, ToxR and ToxT, that operate in cascade fashion with ToxR controlling the synthesis of ToxT. Both biotypes express equivalent levels of ToxR, but only classical strains appear to express ToxT …

Monoclonal Antibody Assay And Kit For Detecting Metal Cations In Body Fluids, Randall R. Carlson, Jay S. Stout, Dwane E. Wylie, Fred W. Wagner, Malcolm Riddell

Biological Process Development Facility: Staff Publications

The invention provides method and kits for detecting a metallic cation in a sample of a body fluid. The preferred method and kits include the use of at least two different types of antibodies having different specificities. In the preferred method, the sample of body fluid can be contacted with an effective amount of a capture antibody specific for a naturally occurring polypeptide that can bind the metallic cation to form a first antigen-antibody complex. An effective amount of an antibody specific for an epitope on a metallic cation-naturally occurring polypeptide complex or an antibody specific for a metallic cation …

Genomics: Past & Future

AT THE END OF THE ROAD in Little Cottonwood Canyon, near Salt Lake City, Alta is a place of near-mythic renown among skiers. In time it may well assume similar status among molecular geneticists. In December 1984, a conference there, co-sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, pondered a single question: Does modern DNA research offer a way of detecting tiny genetic mutations—and, in particular, of observing any increase in the mutation rate among the survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings and their descendants? In short the answer was, Not yet. But in an atmosphere of rare intellectual fertility, …

The Change From Red To White Meat: The Role Of Technology, Lilyan E. Fulginiti Jul 1996

The Change From Red To White Meat: The Role Of Technology, Lilyan E. Fulginiti

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

Since 1950, the composition of the U.S. meat diet has shifted markedly from red meats to poultry. For example, from 1970 to 1984, on a percapita basis, beef consumption has declined by 6.4 percent, while chicken and turkey consumptions have increased by 37.9, and 42.5 percent respectively (U.S. Department of Agriculture, 1985). The numerous studies of this phenomenon from the demand side (Chavas, 1983; Braschler, 1983; Nyankori and Miller, 1982; Moschini and Meilke, 1984; Wohlgenant, 1985, Thurman, 1987; Chalfant and Alston, 1988) have failed to achieve a consensus as to whether a change in taste contributed to this shift. One …

Effects Of Climate Change On Hypoxia In Coastal Waters: A Doubled Co2 Scenario For The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Dubravko Justic, Nancy N. Rabalais, R. Eugene Turner

Faculty Publications

Projections of general circulation models suggest that freshwater discharge from the Mississippi River to the coastal ocean will increase 20% if atmospheric CO2 concentration doubles. This result is likely to affect water column stability, surface productivity, and global oxygen cycling in the northern Gulf of Mexico, which is the site of the largest (up to 16,500 km2) and most severe hypoxic zone (liter‒1) in the western Atlantic Ocean. We use a coupled physical-biological two-box model to investigate potential effects of climate change on seasonal oxygen cycling and hypoxia in river-dominated coastal waters. The model was developed and calibrated using comprehensive …
