Lei Rimana "She Stays", Keith Watson

Theses

My concept is to re-evaluate and advance personal communication aids, generally, but not entirely, in the form of greeting cards, to a new level of interest and signification. The goal is to eliminate the passive viewer, and have the individual actively participate in the presentation. The computer-based, interactive media project is designed around three-dimensional sculptures, which serve as "narrators," and put back the one-to-one interaction that is so often missing in non-verbal greetings. In combining technology with more traditional storytelling techniques, it will develop and express a personal message that will help reinforce the intent of the message by becoming …

Technology, A Problem For Humanity, Carl Friedrich Von Weizsacker, M. G. Hesse

University of Dayton Review

Literature in the Industrial Age is the title of this comprehensive and interesting exhibition being opened here today in Marbach. I am pleased to have been invited to present the inaugural address. I have entitled it "Technology, A Problem For Humanity." First of all, let me elucidate the interrelation of the two titles, i.e., that of this exhibition and that of my address.

Charming Pigs And Mimetic Desire In Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction , Paul H. Schmidt Sep 1996

Charming Pigs And Mimetic Desire In Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction , Paul H. Schmidt

University of Dayton Review

Critics have argued that Pulp Fiction sells tickets because it exploits America's love of violence and gore. Such criticism conforms to the knee-jerk assumption that every film containing significant violence is somehow merely capitalizing on it, but Quentin Tarantino's work suggests that violence in film can make important cultural observations about the human processes that lead to and away from violence.

Changing Places: Philip Larkin As Train Traveler, Roger Craik Sep 1996

Changing Places: Philip Larkin As Train Traveler, Roger Craik

University of Dayton Review

"I am not a natural traveler: a place has to be pretty intolerable before it enters my head that somewhere else might be nicer" (qtd. in Chambers 48), wrote Philip Larkin in 1959 with the comic grouchiness which his friends had come to expect in his letters to them and which the public had begun to sense in The Less Deceived (1955) and would see more distinctly in The Whitsun Weddings (1964) and most of all in High Windows (1974). Larkin in his letters would always produce a grand display of irritation towards any journey for the disruption that it …

Yusuf Idris: Visions Of The Self Iin The Grotesque Other, Diana Royer Sep 1996

Yusuf Idris: Visions Of The Self Iin The Grotesque Other, Diana Royer

University of Dayton Review

Yusuf Idris, one of Egypt's finest writers. once remarked, "In a constantly changing world … a writer is a major factor in revolution. He has a part to play in society." Idris played his part in modem Egyptian society by urging a transition, even a revolution in perceptions and attitudes. As a reminder that life is in flux and human perception is subjective, Idris introduces grotesque elements into his fiction. A life of political and professional involvement in the Arab world informs Idris' use of the grotesque — a term I use in its widest definition as that which is …

Effective Doses Of Recombinant Human Bone Morphogenetic Protein-2 In Experimental Spinal Fusion, Harvinder Sandhu, Linda E.A. Kanim, J. Michael Kabo, Jeffrey M. Toth, Erik N. Zeegen, David Liu, Rick B. Delamarter, Edgar G. Dawson Sep 1996

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Study Design

Nineteen dogs underwent L4-L5 intertransverse process fusions with either 58 μg, 115 μg, 230 μg, 460 μg, or 920 μg of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 carried by a polylactic acid polymer. A previous study (12 dogs) compared 2300 μg of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2, autogenous iliac bone, and carrier alone in this model. All fusions subsequently were compared.

Objectives

To characterize the dose-response relationship of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 in a spinal fusion model.

Summary of Background Data

Recombinant osteoinductive morphogens, such as recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2, are effective in vertebrate diaphyseal defect and …

Self-Study Report: 05 Undergraduate Academic Programs

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Materials and History

Four years ago the Departments of Agricultural Communications and Agricultural Education were merged into one unit. The resultant Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education and Communication (AgLEC) has provided considerable opportunities for growth and development.

The collaborative efforts of the faculty are readily identified in the expanded offerings for students in both the teaching and non-teaching options of the agricultural education major and in the agricultural journalism major, as well as for students from other majors opting for various AgLEC courses. New offerings in human resources development and technical communication have been developed; major changes in the agricultural education program are …

Self-Study Report: 07 Research And Scholarly Activity

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Materials and History

The Department of AgLEC is committed to a strong program of research and scholarly activity, which is complementary to its programs of teaching and outreach. In recognition of this programmatic initiative, as a part of the 1995•1999 strategic planning process, the department created and empowered a separate faculty committee to be exclusively concerned with research and scholarly activity. The Research & Scholarly Activity (R&SA) Committee (which consists of both departmental faculty and members external to the department) assumed duties previously included in the mandates of the departmental Graduate Committee. This action reflected special faculty concern regarding the status of research …

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Materials and History

We anticipate the changes during the next decade which will impact Nebraska food, agricultural and agribusiness industries, the management of natural resources and the quality of life opportunities for our people are expected to exceed those that occurred during the past 50 years. To ensure the programs of the University of Nebraska Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources (IANR) remain responsive and effective in the future, it is urgent for as to assess our program priorities and operational procedures to strengthen Nebraska’s agricultural and natural resources system. While doing so, we must also prepare students and clientele to make the …
