Improving Shareholder Monitoring Of Corporate Management By Expanding Statutory Access To Information, Randall Thomas Oct 1996

Improving Shareholder Monitoring Of Corporate Management By Expanding Statutory Access To Information, Randall Thomas

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

A central issue in contemporary corporate law is the effectiveness of shareholders as monitors of corporate management. For example, in a series of recent articles, legal scholars have debated whether the rapid growth in the equity ownership positions of institutional investors, the relative stability of their shareholdings in each company, and their increased activism in corporate governance matters, will lead to better monitoring by shareholders and improved corporate performance. However, two predicates to effective shareholder monitoring are that dispersed investors have information about the companies they invest in and that they can communicate this information to other investors so that …

Efficacy Of Octreotide In Diarrhoea Due To Vibrio Cholerae: A Randomized, Controlled Trial, Z Abbas, I Moid, A H. Khan, S M. Jafri, S H. Shah, S Abid, S Hamid Oct 1996

Efficacy Of Octreotide In Diarrhoea Due To Vibrio Cholerae: A Randomized, Controlled Trial, Z Abbas, I Moid, A H. Khan, S M. Jafri, S H. Shah, S Abid, S Hamid

Section of Gastroenterology

Although octreotide, a long-acting analogue of somatostatin, is currently used in the treatment of chronic secretory diarrhoea due to various causes, its role in the management of acute secretory diarrhoea is not well established. In the present study, therefore, the therapeutic value of octreotide in the management of cholera, a classical example of acute secretory diarrhoea, was investigated. During an outbreak of cholera, patients admitted with acute secretory diarrhoea of < or = 24 h duration and a purging rate > 100 ml/h were enrolled on the study and randomly assigned to octreotide (N = 17) and control (N = 16) groups. All 33 patients received intravenous fluid replacement and antibiotic …

Vincentian Education: A Call To Mission, Donald J. Harrington C.M. Oct 1996

Vincentian Education: A Call To Mission, Donald J. Harrington C.M.

Vincentian Studies

Donald Harrington, the president of St. John’s University, explores the dimensions that the Vincentian charism adds to work in education. The mission of Vincentian education is to instill Vincentian values, particularly love of the poor, in others. It is to help persons who are poor create better lives for themselves and “to preach Christ the evangelizer of the poor” to members of all social classes. Vincentian education is nourished by Vincentian spirituality. Educators must create an environment in which all are respected, so that God may be found in everyone. Educators’ actions will help others to know God. Vincentian education …

Procedurally Rational Decision-Making And Control, Richard L. Frost, Michael A. Goodrich, Wynn C. Stirling Oct 1996

Procedurally Rational Decision-Making And Control, Richard L. Frost, Michael A. Goodrich, Wynn C. Stirling

Faculty Publications

Substantive rationality requires a decision-maker to be a utility maximizer; under this paradigm, the decision is paramount, and not dependent on the computational process used to obtain it. Procedural rationality is dependent on the method used to make the decision; reasonableness of the procedure is paramount. Well-formed problems are amenable to substantive rationality; ill-formed problems are not, but are amenable to procedural rationality. To qualify as being procedurally rational, a methodology must possess a sound epistemological basis, it must be amenable to a formal design synthesis procedure, and it must be consistent with substantive rationality. Epistemic utility theory forms the …

Risky Business, Michael S. Baram Oct 1996

Risky Business, Michael S. Baram

Faculty Scholarship

In prior studies by high-level commissions, emphasis was given to improving the scientific basis and institutional procedures for risk assessment and risk regulation within existing statutory frameworks. Recommendations have led to slow but steady progress. This study is considerably different. It emphasizes a public health approach for efficient use of resources in a new flexible framework for risk management, reductionist approaches to risk assessment and characterization, increased public involvement, and various methods for managing such public involvement. It provides a mix of aspirations and concepts, procedures, and "shop floor rules" for putting the new system of risk management into practice. …

Characterization Of P39, A Borrelia Burgdorferi Specific Protein, Jill M. Troyer Oct 1996

Characterization Of P39, A Borrelia Burgdorferi Specific Protein, Jill M. Troyer

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease, expresses a species specific, 39 kiloDalton protein of unknown function called P39. This protein is highly immunogenic and the presence of anti-P39 antibodies in patient sera is used as an indicator of B. burgdorferi infection. P39 is also a candidate for vaccine developement due to conserved expression of P39 among B. burgdorferi isolates. Since little is presently known about this important molecule, the present study was designed to characterize P39 and was carried out in six separate investigations. First, infectious and noninfectious isolates of B. burgdorferi were established in vitro, and …

The Diet Of Oryzomys Palustris Based On Stomach Content Analysis, Shannon L. Wright Oct 1996

The Diet Of Oryzomys Palustris Based On Stomach Content Analysis, Shannon L. Wright

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Oryzomys palustris (Harlan) is unusual in that it is one of two carnivorous mammals in the Family Muridae in North America. A diet analysis of Oryzomys palustris. the marsh rice rat, was done based on stomach contents. This was accomplished by taking the animals from two study areas located on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. The animals were taken monthly for one year. Once caught, the animals were sacrificed and their stomach contents were identified to the lowest taxonomic level possible. This study showed that rice rats were omnivorous mammals, eating a variety of foods, including dicots, monocots, crabs, …

Brown-Headed Cowbird (Molothrus Ater) Range Expansion Into The Southeast: Effects On The Passerine Populations Using North American Breeding Bird Survey Data, Elizabeth Pruitt Henderson Oct 1996

Brown-Headed Cowbird (Molothrus Ater) Range Expansion Into The Southeast: Effects On The Passerine Populations Using North American Breeding Bird Survey Data, Elizabeth Pruitt Henderson

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

North American Breeding Bird Survey data that were collected from 1971-1992 in Virginia, North Carolina, south Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama and Tennessee were used in this analysis of the impact of Brown-headed Cowbird range expansion on four warbler and four vireo host species.

Maps of mean cowbird abundances were produced using kriging for the periods 1971-1975, 1976-1980, 1981-1985, 1986-1990 and 1991-1992. These maps illustrated a complex invasion of the southeastern United States by Brown-headed Cowbird.

Linear regression analyses of host and cowbird abundances within physiographic strata, showed no species to be in decline or increasing in abundance over the entire …

Passage Or Pathology: Current Attitudes Toward Women's Aging In The Literature Of Menopause, Kaaren Gearhart Ancarrow Oct 1996

Passage Or Pathology: Current Attitudes Toward Women's Aging In The Literature Of Menopause, Kaaren Gearhart Ancarrow

Institute for the Humanities Theses

Menopause is currently portrayed in the medical literature as a pathological 11 process resulting from "hormone deficiency." However, feminist writers contend that the climacteric is part of the normal female aging process and oppose the medicalization of menopause and the consequent inevitable hormone replacement therapy (HR T) promoted by the hegemonic medical and pharmaceutical industries. This paper explores the historical development of these two paradigms of menopause and their manifestations in samples of three classes of contemporary literature on the subject: gynecological textbooks, popular advice books written by physicians, and women's accounts. Five major themes are investigated using quantitative and …

Characterization Of Rainfall Runoff Quality From A Shipyard Drydock, Peter Pommerenk Oct 1996

Characterization Of Rainfall Runoff Quality From A Shipyard Drydock, Peter Pommerenk

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Water quality and hydrological data were collected during seventeen rain events and additional data was obtained from laboratory experiments to characterize the quality of stormwater runoff from a drydock located on the Elizabeth River in Norfolk, Virginia.

The results indicated that the concentrations of dissolved constituents in drydock runoff increased with decreasing flow rate, while solids concentrations exhibited positive correlation to flow rate, suggesting that the mobilization of particulate matter is velocity driven. Approximating the runoff hydrograph due to a storm event using a simple model enabled derivation of the average time that rainwater resides on the drydock surface before …

Leading Without Authority: An Examination Of The Impact Of Transformational Leadership Cooperative Extension Work Groups And Teams, William Brown, Elizabeth A. Birnstihl, Daniel W. Wheeler

Journal of Extension

An increased use of ad hoc teams and work-groups to accomplish key Extension objectives combined with reluctance to enlarge existing organizational structures require particular leadership skills for effectiveness. Utilizing Bass'(1985) full-range leadership formulation, and in particular his description of transformational leadership, an exploratory study was undertaken to increase understanding of the efficacy and applicability of the concepts to Extension organizations. The Multifactorial Leadership Questionnaire was administered to a group of ten leaders and 47 followers. Results provide extremely strong support for the proposition that new organizational forms will require transformational leadership skills. Limitations and need for additional study is recognized.
