Dissertations
This research assembles and organizes the literature in the areas of African-American women, the political economy of racism, the Black feminization of poverty, drug use and distribution, and gang violence. This dissertation explores extant theoretical approaches with a special emphasis on their relationship to the underground economy. The researcher uses ethnographic methods to examine the role that female gang members play in the underclass drug infested community of south central Fort Wayne, Indiana. Of the Black females interviewed, some were drug dealers, others were using illegal drugs, and still others were females who just found themselves in the inner-city, in …

Counterinsurgency: Strategy And The Phoenix Of American Capability, Steven Metz Dr.
Counterinsurgency: Strategy And The Phoenix Of American Capability, Steven Metz Dr.
Monographs, Collaborative Studies, & IRPs
Dr. Steven Metz argues that the way the Department of Defense and U.S. military spend the time when counterinsurgency support is not an important part of American national security strategy determines how quickly and easily they react when policymakers commit the nation to such activity. If analysis and debate continues, at least at a low level, the military is better prepared for the reconstitution of capabilities. If it ignores global developments in insurgency and counterinsurgency, the reconstitution of capabilities would be more difficult.

Wiretapping And National Security: Nixon, The Mitchell Doctrine, And The White Panthers. Volume I., Jeff A. Hale
Wiretapping And National Security: Nixon, The Mitchell Doctrine, And The White Panthers. Volume I., Jeff A. Hale
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation discusses a modern version of a constitutional struggle which has characterized American democracy since the first days of the Republic: the citizen's right to privacy versus the Government's need to guarantee "national security." It addresses the Supreme Court's landmark Fourth Amendment wiretapping decision of June 1972, U.S. v. U.S. District Court, which ruled unconstitutional the so-called "Mitchell Doctrine", the Nixon Administration's attempt to gain Judicial sanction for "national security" wiretaps without prior court order of suspected "domestic subversive" groups. In its unanimous Keith decision, the Court upheld the "primacy of warrants" in domestic intelligence investigations. Keith remains the …

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
The fall of Communism marked a new era for Eastern European countries. The events that followed the 1989 revolutions brought about new economic reforms within this region. However, only a few countries have managed to successfully overcome the shroud their communist predecessors had on their approach to business and industry. Poland is one country that is rapidly overcoming its history.
Poland constitutes one of the largest single markets in Eastern Europe and has the highest growth rate of Central and Eastern Europe (4.1%), as well as the highest GDP of $180.4 billion. It offers direct access to both the former …

Criminal Mischief: The Federalization Of American Criminal Law, Kathleen F. Brickey
Criminal Mischief: The Federalization Of American Criminal Law, Kathleen F. Brickey
UC Law Journal
The federalization of American criminal law was not an issue that would have been discussed prior to the twentieth century. Before the turn of the century, the vast majority of crime was regulated solely by the states. However, as Congress began to exert its regulatory muscle under the Commerce Clause more frequently, it began to view the Commerce Clause as a vehicle to use in creating an increasing number of federal crimes. Today, federal statutes exist that criminalize a wide range of activity-from possession and sale of narcotics to violence against a domestic partner.
Professor Brickey documents the expansion of …
