The Dilemma Of Choice: A Feminist Perspective On The Limits Of Freedom Of Contract, Gillian K. Hadfield Apr 1995

The Dilemma Of Choice: A Feminist Perspective On The Limits Of Freedom Of Contract, Gillian K. Hadfield

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

In this essay I explore what Michael Trebilcock's work in The Limits of Freedom of Contract offers feminists in terms of a resolution or transcendance of the dilemma of choice. Trebilcock's work does not address the deepest feminist concerns about conflicts between autonomy and welfare, but it does shed light on narrower versions of the dilemma, providing an analytical framework for the feminist dilemma of choice and emphasizing the pervasiveness of this problem in contract law. Trebilcock's recommendation that society simultaneously use different institutions to promote different values also has salience for the feminist dilemma of choice.

Effects Of Witnessing Domestic Violence On Children, Theresa L. Bundy

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of domestic violence on children. The main questions explored were the effects of domestic violence on the self-perception and behavior of children. The children at a shelter for domestic violence completed the Pictorial Scale of Perceived Competence and Social Acceptance for Young Children and the Self-Perception Profile for Children, depending on the child's age. The children also completed a questionnaire on their views of relationships and their future. The mothers of the children completed a standardized scale that paralleled the scale completed by the children, along with questionnaires on the …

Experiential-Learning Activities In Undergraduate Developmental Psychology, Andrea D. Clements Mar 1995

Experiential-Learning Activities In Undergraduate Developmental Psychology, Andrea D. Clements

Higher Education

In two studies, I examined student responses to an increased emphasis on experiential activities in a required undergraduate developmental psychology course. For four experiential sections (n=134), each class topic was related to a specific, real-world application. Four other sections (n=187) were taught primarily by lecture, with one out-of-class observation assignment. The experiential sections rated the value of and interest in the subject matter higher and the courtesy and consideration of the instructor significantly more positively than did the lecture sections. Students in the two types of sections did not differ significantly in achievement. A follow-up study identified the origin of …

Resiliency In Children: Identifying And Nurturing Coping Skills Through Outpatient Mental Health Services, Sharon Michel Mar 1995

Resiliency In Children: Identifying And Nurturing Coping Skills Through Outpatient Mental Health Services, Sharon Michel

Theses and Graduate Projects

Resiliency is the ability to adapt successfully despite living in adverse conditions. It involves negotiation between risk and protective factors. Researchers have found that resiliency is not necessarily constant but rather contextual. Therefore, characteristics of resiliency, once identified, can be nurtured and to some extent taught. This research study attempts to identify characteristics of resiliency in children who are brought to an outpatient mental health center for behavioral difficulties and assess whether treatment services nurture such characteristics Problem and competence scales were collected from the parents about their children at intake and again for this study. A comparison was made …

How Do Older Citizens Perceive Community Needs And Define The Roles Of Senior Volunteers In Meeting These Needs?, Twyla R. Busse

Theses and Graduate Projects

The purpose of this project was to explore older adults' perceptions of community needs in education, basic human needs, the environment, and public safety and to define the role(s) older volunteers might play in addressing these needs. It was hypothesized that if older adults were given the opportunity to speak about their perceptions, they would be willing to address the identified needs through volunteerism. Data were gathered through 3 focus groups involving 20 Greater St. Cloud Area RSVP participants between the ages of 60 and 7O.

Findings indicate that older adults do perceive a number of needs in the community …

Vcu Voice (1995-03-27) Mar 1995

Vcu Voice (1995-03-27)

VCU Voice, 1988-1998

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.
