A Postmodern Perspective On The Issue Of Deafness As Culture Versus Pathology, Mary T. Wochar Torres Sep 1995

A Postmodern Perspective On The Issue Of Deafness As Culture Versus Pathology, Mary T. Wochar Torres

JADARA

There is a growing controversy within the field of mental health and deafness over the understanding of deafness as a cultural identifier versus as a pathological condition. Meanwhile the development of postmodern ways of thinking about therapy in general offers a constructive paradigm from which to discuss this issue. Accordingly the author examines the meaning of deafness from a postmodern perspective as well as some implications of this view for therapy involving hearing therapists and deaf clients. She concludes that linguistic and cultural sensitivity on the part of the therapist is paramount in importance when the goal of therapy is …

A Discussion Of The Origins Of The Issues And Subject Matter Present Within The Video 'She Used To Bake Me Cookies'., Judy Mcclenning

Theses

"She Used To Bake Me Cookies", a seventeen minute video done as my thesis project, was the culmination of my work begun during the completion of a Master of Fine Arts Degree at the Rochester Institute of Technology. This project was the logical outgrowth of my previous life experiences in social work and law, and the progression of my photographic and video work. Moving from the problems of sexual harassment, & the pressure to conform one's behavior and appearance to a feminine ideal, I began my examination of the familial roots of the nature of feminine identity. After dealing with …

Identifying Situational Factors Contributing To Combat Performance During Desert Shield And Desert Storm, Gary E. Jandzinski

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research into morale, cohesion, and motivation as determinants of performance during combat concentrates primarily on front-line ground troops. This research focuses on determinants of high performance involving United States Air Force (USAF) aircraft maintenance personnel in rear-echelon contingency bases during Desert Shield and Desert Storm. The significant amount of combat force projected from USAF contingency bases and the likely continued use of such force justifies analysis of determinants of performance for this environment. Basic situational factors (information, food, living conditions, Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) activities, mail and phone service, and entertainment) are potentially influential in motivating maintenance personnel …

Resident Perceptions Regarding Quality Of Care At Sister James Nursing Home, Michelle R. England

Theses and Graduate Projects

The quality of care in nursing homes is under serious

scrutiny by researchers, Iegislators, and the public. There are

numerous ways to evaluate quality of care because of the many

ideas and perceptions about what quality of care actually means.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate quality of care

from the resident's perspective and to determine how quality of

care can be improved at Sister 'James Nursing Home. This study is

based on a national study conducted by the National Citizens'

Coalition of Nursing Home Reform in which residents across the

country defined quality of care. The findings …
