Performing The Community, Telling The Self: Storytelling By Members Of A Group Home For Men With Mental Retardation., Sharon Elizabeth Croft
Performing The Community, Telling The Self: Storytelling By Members Of A Group Home For Men With Mental Retardation., Sharon Elizabeth Croft
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study uses an ethnographic approach to examine the stories told by members of a group home for men with mental retardation. The author contends that the culture of the group home works to constrain how group home members interact within this community. The author argues, however, that despite the cultural constraints, the men use storytelling to establish their individuality, even though the stories themselves, in their content and in the performance of their telling, often reify cultural constraints and their cultural constructions. The author recounts how she, as ethnographer, interacted within this community. After identifying, describing, and analyzing eight …

Educating The Reflective Legal Practitioner, Donald A. Schön
Educating The Reflective Legal Practitioner, Donald A. Schön
Clinical Law Review
I am not a lawyer although I think my father secretly always hoped that I would be one. He would have been glad to see me at this session, but he would have wondered what on earth I had to say to a group of distinguished law professors. The language of the workshop description talks about the need for new thinking in legal education. It talks about the lawyer of the twenty-first century and about how to educate him or her. It talks about bridging the chasm between the classroom and the "real world" -although I notice it carefully avoids …
Beyond A Book Review: Using Clinical Scholarship In Our Teaching, Marla L. Mitchell
Beyond A Book Review: Using Clinical Scholarship In Our Teaching, Marla L. Mitchell
Clinical Law Review
In this essay, I first review a valuable book on criminal defense ethics, Ethical Problems Facing the Criminal Defense Lawyer: Practical Answers to Tough Questions, and then examine how this book can be used to enhance the teaching of ethics in a criminal defense clinic. Ethical Problems is largely the work of clinicians and addresses ethical dilemmas commonly faced by public defenders and court-appointed counsel, dilemmas that students in a criminal defense clinic are likely to encounter. It is also clinical scholarship in another sense, namely that, as Peter Hoffman has urged, it is based in experience, accessible, and understandable …

Equality And Freedom Of Speech (Eighteenth Annual Law Review Symposium: Demise Of The First Amendment? Focus On Rico And Hate Crime Litigation), Terrance Sandalow

The editors responsible for today's symposium have posed an alarming question: whether we are witnessing the demise of the First Amendment. I want to dispel at the outset any anxiety the question may have aroused. The First Amendment is alive and well; indeed, it is thriving. I believe, though I cannot prove, that public respect for the values it expresses has never been greater than it has been in recent years. Whether or not I am correct in that belief, however, it is certain that constitutional protections against governmental efforts to limit speech and other forms of expressive activity are …

An Examination Of Costs And Per-Pupil Revenues In Special Education With Simulations Designed To Enhance The Equity Of Louisiana's Special Education Financing Program., Alton John Royer Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The primary issues this study addressed were special education costs and equity of special education per-pupil revenues among Louisiana's sixty-six school districts. Actual data from 1980 to 1992 were examined and four special education finance models were developed which addressed these issues. Average annual rates of increase in mean per-pupil revenues for regular education and special education were examined to determine the increase in cost of special education versus regular education. Findings indicated special education per-pupil revenues increased at four times the rate of regular education per-pupil revenues for the period examined. Special education per-pupil revenues were examined to determine …

Special Moments, Special Times: Problematic Occasions Following The Death Of A Child, Sarah Brabant, Craig J. Forsyth, Glenda Mcfarlain
Clinical Sociology Review
Using data obtained from 14 interviews representing 9 families and 10 child deaths, this paper examines moments in time that occasion or may occasion social encounters that are problematic for bereaved parent(s): 1) holidays in general, e.g., Christmas, New Years; 2) particular events, e.g., weddings, funerals, graduations; and 3) those occasions specifically associated with the deceased child, e.g., the child's birthday and/or death anniversary. For bereaved parents such occasions may be excruciating. In the case of holidays or special events, the absence of the deceased may be especially poignant since he or she would have been present had he/she lived. …

Reflections On A Case (Of Motherhood), Jane M. Spinak
Faculty Scholarship
She surveyed my office for signs of conspiracy. We had had two or three telephone conversations that had conveyed my ambivalence about representing her. A former colleague had urged her to call the clinic for help but I was reluctant to accept her case for the clinic: we rarely represented foster parents and the procedural complexity of the case convinced me that I would be unable to assign students to represent this client so late in the semester. I was resigned, however, to help her find a lawyer, both because a former colleague had sent her and because the snippets …

Occupational Commitment Under Conditions Of Social Change: The Case Of Professional Marine Engineering In Taiwan, Yan-Nan Chiang
Occupational Commitment Under Conditions Of Social Change: The Case Of Professional Marine Engineering In Taiwan, Yan-Nan Chiang
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
The thesis is concerned with investigating the area of occupational commitment to marine engineering of students from various levels of higher education in maritime institutions. From a general description of socioeconomic change and its relationship to the seafaring profession, the study focuses on the case of Taiwan. A review of literature on commitment demonstrates that commitment may vary as the social-economy changes over time. As technology changes, ships' officers, more specifically marine engineers, are required by shipowners to be educated to degree level. The emphasis in this study is upon the commitment to the shipping industry of young engineering students …

An Exploration And Development Of The Knowledge Foundations Of Social Work, With Particular Reference To Mental Health And Compulsory Admission Assessments, Michael Gerhardt Sheppard
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
This submission seeks lo establish the case that this corpus of work makes a significant and original contribution to a central problem for social work as a profession: the status in relation to practice of its formal knowledge base. This issue has generated intensive debate, with some claiming a central place for formal knowledge in practice and others a more peripheral position. The debate is inconclusive, but evidence suggests that social workers do not generally use theory in practice. This has necessitated recourse to a 'subconscious assimilation' thesis, but evidence from the main research studies is inconclusive, because of the …
Diversity Management: An Administrative Case Study In A Tax-Exempt Human Service Organization, Jerry L. Johnson
Diversity Management: An Administrative Case Study In A Tax-Exempt Human Service Organization, Jerry L. Johnson
Masters Theses
Diversity management is a business strategy that is intended to create an organizational climate where people from diverse backgrounds can succeed based on their work performance and not their personal similarities or differences with the organization's leadership. Diversity management programs are intended to help business remove barriers resulting from discrimination.; The present study investigated the need for a diversity management program in a tax-exempt human service organization. The perceptions and attitudes of organization employees, measured by survey instruments, in conjunction with an employee compensation study, provided the data for this investigation.; The instrument designed for this study and the random …

A National Survey Of Occupational Therapists In The Public Schools: An Assessment Of Current Practice, Attitudes, And Training Needs Regarding The Transition Process For Students With Severe Disabilities, Katherine Josephine Inge
Theses and Dissertations
Because occupational therapy involvement in transition planning is a relatively new area. little was known about the characteristics of school-based therapists who serve students in this age group. The purpose of this study was to determine their current level of participation in the transition process, the roles that therapists identified for themselves in this process, their attitudes towards best practices for serving students ages 14 - 22, and occupational therapists’ future training needs if they are to participate fully in the national transition initiative. A survey was mailed to 1,000 therapists on the American Occupational Therapy Associations Direct Mail List …
