Protecting Women's Welfare In The Face Of Violence, Martha F. Davis, Susan J. Kraham Jan 1995

Protecting Women's Welfare In The Face Of Violence, Martha F. Davis, Susan J. Kraham

Fordham Urban Law Journal

This article argues that the Aid to Families With Dependent Children program provides a valuable means of continuing support for impoverished women. It points out that such women are at an increased risk of domestic violence, and that they are often unable to escape from abusive relationships because they and their children are economically dependent on their partners. The article criticizes proposed reforms to AFDC from this context, arguing that without the safety net provided by public assistance, many women and children would be trapped by financial constraints in dangerous or life threatening relationships. Thus, an adequate level of public …

The Impact Of Dap Inservice Training Of The Beliefs And Practices Of Kindergarten Teachers, Julia H. Haupt, Jean M. Larsen, Clyde C. Robinson, Craig H. Hart

Faculty Publications

As teacher training institutions have adopted the NAEYC standards for developmentally appropriate practices (hereinafter DAP) (Bredekamp, 1987) and have begun to routinely train pre-service teachers in these principles the need for student teaching experiences which reflect this orientation has become a priority for many teacher educators. However, locating developmentally appropriate placement settings, particularly when large numbers of student teachers are being trained simultaneously, may be difficult in some localities.

Religiosity And Aids : The Relationship Between Religious Orientation And Attitudes Toward Aids, Patricia J. Pallay Jan 1995

Religiosity And Aids : The Relationship Between Religious Orientation And Attitudes Toward Aids, Patricia J. Pallay

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

It was hypothesized that religious orientation would influence the attitudes that individuals formulated about AIDS and its victims. Specifically, intrinsically oriented subjects were predicted to have more positive attitudes toward AIDS and people with AIDS, and extrinsically oriented subjects were predicted to have more negative attitudes toward AIDS and people with AIDS. Sixty three college students enrolled in social psychology were administered Allport and Ross' Religious Orientation Scale to measure intrinsic and extrinsic religious orientation. Three existing measures were used to assess attitudes toward AIDS. Additional instruments were also given to assess the subjects' knowledge about AIDS and attitudes toward …

A Normative Study Of The Diagnostic Assessment For The Severely Handicapped (Dash) Scale., Martha Lyle Hamilton

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The prevalence of psychopathology in a large institutionalized population (N = 1259) of individuals with severe and profound mental retardation was examined, using the Diagnostic Assessment for the Severely Handicapped (DASH) scale. Over 60% of the sample exhibited at least one form of disorder according to newly established DASH criteria. Forty percent exhibited two or more disorders. Differences between severely and profoundly mentally retarded groups were found, especially in terms of the duration of symptoms. Profoundly mentally retarded persons had significantly more persistent symptoms. Items were examined for frequency and duration, and items of critical importance to diagnosis were identified. …

Demise Of The College Of Communications And Fine Arts At Siuc, Gerald Stone

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article focuses on significant events leading to the demise of the College of Communications and Fine Arts (CCFA) at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (SIUC) in 1993. The CCFA at SIUC was one of the largest units of its kind in the country. It had been in existence almost 25 years, formed when the fine arts school joined the School of Communications. In 1990, Jim Edgar was elected governor of Illinois, the first Republican in recent memory. The change in political fortunes brought a new head of the Illinois Board of Higher Education, the coordinating body for all post-secondary …

Communication: The Vital Link Between The Sexes, Ruth A. Weber Jan 1995

Communication: The Vital Link Between The Sexes, Ruth A. Weber

Theses

Our ability to get along with the opposite sex is often directly affected by our inability to communicate. We believe we are communicating, only to realize that what we said is not what was understood. This is not the fault of any one person or sex but is a misunderstanding of the different ways women and men communicate. These differences begin in infancy and continue to thrive throughout our lives. Our culture, religion, history, language, stereotypes, sex, and other influences discussed in this study affect how and what we perceive others to be. We observe each other from our own …

The Importance Of Utilizing Older Workers As They Become A More Significant Factor In America's Work Force, Marilyn K. Brown Jan 1995

The Importance Of Utilizing Older Workers As They Become A More Significant Factor In America's Work Force, Marilyn K. Brown

Theses

This thesis will focus on the study of how America's companies are beginning to realize what a valuable asset their older employees have become. These people bring years of experience, knowledge , skill and loyalty to the work place. Contrary to stereotypes of older workers being slow, inflexible, unproductive, costly, uncreative and not adaptable , organizations are discovering that these people in general do not fit this "mold."

Throughout history there has been a change in attitudes toward older individuals. During colonial America, age represented authority, power , arrogance and greed. Around the time of the American Revolution, equality among …

Escaping The Tragedy Of The Commons, Roger A. Lohmann Jan 1995

Escaping The Tragedy Of The Commons, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Is tragedy due to over harvesting an inevitable consequence of the voluntary action of cooperation in a commons? No. Actually, commons theory resolved this question several decades ago. Such common goods are those pursued jointly by pluralities less than the dominant majority controlling the state and its unique ability to define public goods. In an era when the state has proven relatively powerless to define unambiguous public goods and public policy making is largely circumscribed in terms of a competition among interest groups, the state itself has become a major producer of common, rather than genuinely public, goods.

The Contribution Of Religion To Volunteer Work, John Wilson, Thomas Janoski Jan 1995

The Contribution Of Religion To Volunteer Work, John Wilson, Thomas Janoski

Special Topics, General

The connection between church membership, church activism, and volunteering is explored using a three-wave panel study of young adults. Volunteering to help others solve community problems is more likely among members of churches that emphasize this-worldly social concerns, especially among those socially involved in these churches. Among Catholics, the connection between church involvement and volunteering is formed early and remains strong. Among liberal Protestants, the connection is made only in middle age. Among moderate and conservative Protestants there is little connection at all. Conservative Protestants who attend church regularly are less likely to be involved in secular volunteering and more …

Standards Of Professional Conduct In Alternative Dispute Resolution Symposium, John D. Feerick, Carol Izumi, Kimberlee Kovach, Lela Love Jan 1995

Standards Of Professional Conduct In Alternative Dispute Resolution Symposium, John D. Feerick, Carol Izumi, Kimberlee Kovach, Lela Love

Faculty Scholarship

ADR is unique in being interdisciplinary and interprofessional. ADR neutrals perform in a distinctive role and not as members of their own profession. The ADR process demands adherence to policies like voluntariness, respect for party autonomy, and confidentiality, which, in turn, make special ethical demands on ADR neutrals. Thus there are compelling reasons to contemplate an interdisciplinary code of conduct that addresses the professional duties and obligations of ADR neutrals. Standards of conduct for ADR has been a much discussed and debated topic over the past decade, both as to source and content. The two principal sources of standards have …

Student Violence In The Schools, Juan J. Barthelemy Jan 1995

Student Violence In The Schools, Juan J. Barthelemy

Graduate Research Papers

Acts of student violence in the schools are increasing (Chance, 1990; Crosby, 1993; Rich, 1992; Urben, 1986), especially in the larger cities in the United States (Hellman & Beaton, 1986). These acts of violence include violence toward other students as well as toward the school personnel and property. In this paper I will discuss selected aspects of violence in the schools. More specifically, I discuss the prevalence of violence in the schools, school based interventions and implications for the practice of school psychologists.
