Evaluation Of Animal Welfare By The Self-Expression Of An Anxiety State, M. P. Carey, J. P. Fry
Evaluation Of Animal Welfare By The Self-Expression Of An Anxiety State, M. P. Carey, J. P. Fry
Assessment of Animal Welfare Collection
Although mental well-being has long been accepted as an important aspect of animal welfare, the subjective feelings of farm or laboratory animals are regarded as lying beyond the scope of scientific enquiry. We now report that pharmacological conditioning of pigs with a drug, pentylenetetrazole, known to induce anxiety in man, permits investigation of the presence or absence of this psychological state during exposure to a variety of environmental stimuli encountered during normal husbandry. Such pharmacological conditioning therefore provides a valuable means to assess and improve elements of animal welfare and should be applicable to other species that show operant behaviour.

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
A causal-comparative study that evaluated the qualitative and quantitative data for selected Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University graduate courses in both the distance learning and traditional classroom delivery methods. The population for this study was made up of two segments. The first segment consisted of all students that completed a particular Master of Aeronautical Science course through distance learning, with the instructor that developed the course. The second segment consisted of all students that completed a particular Master of Aeronautical Science course in the classroom environment with the instructor that developed the course for distance learning presentation. The primary instrument for this …

The Nutritional Knowledge, Food Choices And Exercise Habits Of Students At Langston University, Preston Solomon
McCabe Thesis Collection
The process of nutritional assessment has long been used to identify specific nutritional problems that demand attention and correction. The major health problems in the United States and much of the industrialized world have nutrition at their root. The ten leading causes of death in the United States are in some way related to the lack of adequate knowledge, adequate nutrition, or both. Increasingly young people are experiencing obesity, high blood pressure, and high serum cholesterol. These conditions pose problems in nutrition and healthy lifestyles in general. Given that behavior is related positively to knowledge, good nutrition and medical knowledge …

The Nutritional Knowledge, Food Choices, And Exercise Habits Of Students At Langston University, Preston Solomon
McCabe Thesis Collection
The nutritional knowledge, food choice, and exercise habits of an individual determine his or her overall health and life expectancy. Information on these topics enables nutrition educators to develop strategies to improve knowledge and to tailor educational efforts which affect a large number of persons. Poor health in America today is an ever present reality. Heart disease, cancer, diabetes mellitus, cerebrovascular diseases, renal diseases, and pulmonary diseases are causes of death related in part to lack of nutritional knowledge and poor eating and exercise habits. A few of these diseases are chronic in nature and are the most deadly.

Dynamic Simulation Of General Aviation Cabin Environments And Occupant Restraint Systems, Mark A. Shilladay
Dynamic Simulation Of General Aviation Cabin Environments And Occupant Restraint Systems, Mark A. Shilladay
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
After a five year study of General Aviation (GA) accidents, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has concluded that aircraft cabin environments place the occupant at high risk of suffering severe injuries in an emergency crash situation. Studies of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) seat tests were used to form the basis of a computer analysis to address dynamic cabin environments. In this effort a simplified system of masses, springs, and dampers are used to simulate the more complex configuration of cabin structure, seat, pilot, and restraints on a personal computer. The primary objective of this study is to accurately simulate …
Paper Session Iii-B - Adaption To Space And The Development Of Human Behavior, Harold S. Issen
Paper Session Iii-B - Adaption To Space And The Development Of Human Behavior, Harold S. Issen
Space Congress® Proceedings
Space exploration offers an unprecedented opportunity to study the evolution of bipedalism, the use of two feet as the primary method of locomotion. Among mammals, this adaptation is uniquely human (Wilson:52). Bipedalism is impossible in the weightlessness of space, and astronauts have had to adapt other means of locomotion. A better understanding of human adaptation to weightlessness may offer insight to the human evolution of bipedalism.
Bipedalism and weightlessness have resulted in physical as well as behavioral changes. In bipedalism, the weight of the body shifted from four to two legs and feet, transmitting the load vertically through the spinal …
Paper Session Iii-C - Development Of A Limited Undergraduate And Graduate Space Studies Curricula, Lance K. Erickson
Paper Session Iii-C - Development Of A Limited Undergraduate And Graduate Space Studies Curricula, Lance K. Erickson
Space Congress® Proceedings
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) began developing a non-technical space studies curricula by introducing an undergraduate minor in 1990. Careful planning of the curriculum and favorable student interest in the space subjects assisted in the success of the nine-course program. The success of the minor has allowed the University to study the creation of broader undergraduate and graduate degree programs in space studies subjects. Developing a graduate program is more difficult than undergraduate programs because of the necessary ties to a strong undergraduate curriculum and because of the need for supporting courses and experienced faculty members. The structure and delivery of …

Paper Session Ii-C - Policy Considerations For Lunar Development, Charles D. O'Dale
Space Congress® Proceedings
A Lunar Base project will not begin until early next century. However, the legal and strategic framework around which it will be planned are under construction today. Important questions such as the base's long-term purpose are being left unanswered while we plan its technical implementation, but if we are to see a lunar base become part of an effective and permanent space infrastructure of use to future projects, the goals towards which it will reach and the conflicts it will face must be addressed. This paper discusses some of the factors which will play a role in forming a lunar …

Heart Rate Variability Studies On Ambulatory Subjects Using Ekg Derived Respiration, Xiaorui Tang
Heart Rate Variability Studies On Ambulatory Subjects Using Ekg Derived Respiration, Xiaorui Tang
Theses
Power spectral analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) provides a powerful non-invasive too] for exploring the balance between sympathetic and parasympathetic components of the autonomic nervous system. In the spectrum of HRV, there are three distinct peaks. The high frequency (HF) band (0.15 to 0.4 Hz) is correlated with parasympathetic activity and this is the band of interest 'in the study.
Two OTOUPS Of SL113jeCtS were considered in this work, stroke survivors and subjects performing an oral presentation in front of an audience. Data were collected with a Holter monitor to allow for ambulatory recording. Respiration was derived from the …
Model Parameter Identification For Rod And Cone Oscillatory Potentials, Kehur Banker
Model Parameter Identification For Rod And Cone Oscillatory Potentials, Kehur Banker
Theses
The use of signal modeling of the oscillatory potential (OP) of the electroretinogram (ERG), in the study of cone-rod interaction is investigated. ERG response data were analyzed for red, orange, blue and white flashes on no background and with red flashes on a blue background (to suppress rod responses). The OP signals were extracted from the ERG by digital bandpass filtering and a signal model was fitted through a simplex algorithm to produce the parameters including "OP envelope-amplitude", latency in terms of "center-time" of the OP-envelope and OP frequency. Amplitude for red flashes with or without a blue background showed …

The Animal Research Controversy: Protest, Process & Public Policy, Andrew N. Rowan, Franklin M. Loew, Joan C. Weer
Experimentation Collection
The controversy today regarding the use of animals in research appears on the surface to be a strongly polarized struggle between the scientific community and the animal protection movement. However, there is a wide range of opinions and philosophies on both sides. Mistrust between the factions has blossomed while communication has withered. Through the 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s, the animal movement grew in numbers and financial resources, and developed much greater public recognition and political clout. The research community paid relatively little attention to the animal movement for much of this period but, alarmed by several public relations coups …
An Overview Of Parallel Distributed Processing, Jonathan P. Heyl
An Overview Of Parallel Distributed Processing, Jonathan P. Heyl
Modern Psychological Studies
Parallel Distributed Processing (PDP), or Connectionism, is a frontier cognitive theory that is currently garnering considerable attention from a variety of fields. Briefly summarized herein are the theoretical foundations of the theory, the key elements observed in creating simulation computer programs, examples of its applications, and some comparisons with other models of cognition. A majority of the information is culled from Rumelhart and McClelland's (1986) two volume introduction to the theory, while some concerns from the field and the theorists' accompanying responses are taken from a 1990 article by Hanson and Burr.
The "Presence Is An Essential Function" Myth: The Ada's Trapdoor For The Chronically Ill, Audrey E. Smith
The "Presence Is An Essential Function" Myth: The Ada's Trapdoor For The Chronically Ill, Audrey E. Smith
Seattle University Law Review
In nearly all cases, long-term chronic illnesses satisfy the ADA's broad definition of disability. However, when these illnesses begin to cause absenteeism, the "presence is an essential function" rule effectively denies protection to the victims of these illnesses, as they are no longer "qualified individuals" under the ADA regardless of whether they satisfy the technical requirements for a position. The idea that "presence is an essential function" is a myth because (1) it erroneously assumes that most jobs can be performed only at the worksite, and (2) virtually all employers are able to, and do, accommodate some degree of employee …

The History And Evolution Of Stretching, Jennifer Roberts
The History And Evolution Of Stretching, Jennifer Roberts
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Virtually every athlete engages in some form of stretching before beginning a training routine or competitive event. Stretching is an integral component of endless physical therapy treatment programs for muscle strains, ligament sprains, fibromyalgia protocols, and joint replacements to name a few. However, the physiological effect of stretching and the best method for producing the desired outcome is often questioned by coaches, athletes, and therapists.
The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of static stretching and ballistic stretching individually and in conjunction with modalities. Muscle physiology, the benefits of flexibility, and the psychological and physiological effects of …

Cerebral Vascular Accidents And Therapeutic Treatments, Allison L. Hartman
Cerebral Vascular Accidents And Therapeutic Treatments, Allison L. Hartman
Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)
A cerebral vascular accident (CVA) is commonly referred to as a stroke. Stroke is the third leading cause of death and the number one cause of serious disability in the United States. Approximately 550,000 people suffer a stroke each year; 150,000 of these result in death. Each stroke is unique. After a stroke, some victims will suffer severe deficits and/or permanent disability for the remainder of their lives. Yet other victims may suffer only mild, temporary deficits and may recover completely. Currently over three million Americans are living with the effects of stroke . Most of these individuals have been …
