The Roots Of Healing: Ethnomedical Adaptation Of The Ohlone Indians, Nader R. Yasin Jan 1995

The Roots Of Healing: Ethnomedical Adaptation Of The Ohlone Indians, Nader R. Yasin

Research Manuscript Series

Western medical specialists attempt to treat pathological phenomena by using synthetic drugs. These synthetic drugs can be costly and time consuming to manufacture, distribute and prescribe. Only recently has the mainstream medical community begun to acknowledge the possible benefits of traditional medicinal curing, much of which utilizes inexpensive organic compounds for treatments. Furthermore, native peoples throughout the world have an extensive knowledge of disease and of disease treatment (Vogel 1970, Densmore 1974, Margolin 1978, Heizer and Elsasser 1980). Relying on centuries of botanical experimentation, native peoples have been able to treat a vast number of medical ailments utilizing floral and …

The Eberhard Privy: Archaeological And Historical Insights Into Santa Clara History, Samantha Harris, Jennifer Geddes, Kate Hahn, Diane Chonette, Russell Skowronek

Research Manuscript Series

Broad open spaces, beautiful roses, and ancient trees today characterize the Santa Clara University campus and the surrounding tree shaded neighborhood. Along those quiet streets of the Old Quad many students and area residents go for walks in the City's relatively clean air. Beyond the sound of jets taking off from the nearby airport or the occasional wail of a siren Santa Clara is a tranquil place, seemingly unchanged for decades. Yet, this is a deceiving view as it is a community that has radically changed since the end of World War II. Over the past half century, Santa Clara …

Restructuring The Mexican Sugar Industry: Campesinos, The State, And Private Capital, Donna Chollett Jan 1995

Restructuring The Mexican Sugar Industry: Campesinos, The State, And Private Capital, Donna Chollett

Anthropology Publications

Under the new agrarian policies and economic rules of Article 27, implemented in January 1992, the customary patters of political patronage and loyalty in the countryside no longer operate as before. Campesions now are challenged to think and act like entrepreneurs who assume investment risks in order to successfully participate in competitive markets. But most possess neither the economic resources nor worldviews to be the “campesino entrepreneurs” sought by the government or by the leaders of the Confederación Nacional Campesina (CNC) and the Confederación Nacional de Productores Rurales (CNPR), the two campesino confederations affiliated to the ruling PRI. This contradiction …

A Shared Space, James S. Griffith Jan 1995

A Shared Space, James S. Griffith

All USU Press Publications

Where it divides Arizona and Sonora, the international boundary between Mexico and the United States is both a political reality, literally expressed by a fence, and, to a considerable degree, a cultural illusion. Mexican, Anglo, and Native American cultures straddle the fence; people of various ethnic backgrounds move back and forth across the artificial divide, despite increasing obstacles to free movement. On either side is found a complex cultural mix of ethnic, religious, and occupational groups. In A Shared Space James Griffith examines many of the distinctive folk expressions of this varied cultural region.
