Homologizing Pregnancy And Motherhood: A Consideration Of Abortion, Julia E. Hanigsberg Nov 1995

Homologizing Pregnancy And Motherhood: A Consideration Of Abortion, Julia E. Hanigsberg

Michigan Law Review

In this essay I reconsider abortion in order to bridge what initially seem to be two opposing frameworks: first, the conception of abortion as an issue of women's bodily integrity and liberty, and second, the acknowledgement of the existence and meaning of intrauterine life. The abortion choice is indeed deeply and necessarily tied to women's bodily integrity. I will discuss how taking away women's ability to control their decision not to become mothers can be severely damaging to their very sense of self, for this denial of decisionmaking divides women from their wombs and uses their wombs for a purpose …

Chix Nix Bundle-O-Stix: A Feminist Critique Of The Disaggregation Of Property, Jeanne L. Schroeder Nov 1995

Chix Nix Bundle-O-Stix: A Feminist Critique Of The Disaggregation Of Property, Jeanne L. Schroeder

Articles

Jeanne Schroeder's article critiques the traditional "bundle of sticks" metaphor of property theory, arguing that it erodes property's unity and essence. She integrates insights from Hegel and Lacan to propose a more cohesive understanding of property, emphasizing its role in mediating human interactions and freedom. Schroeder challenges gendered power dynamics in property theory and advocates for a feminist reimagining of property that transcends outdated metaphors.

The Sexual Economy Of Women And Hiv In Uganda: A Critical Biocultural Analysis, Ron Barrett Nov 1995

The Sexual Economy Of Women And Hiv In Uganda: A Critical Biocultural Analysis, Ron Barrett

Southern Anthropologist

A lens of biocultural medical anthropology is used to critically examine host-parasite coevolution in the sexual economies of Ugandan women. These women are often informed risk managers concerning sexual exchanges in relation to factors of political economy, women's status, male sexuality, and the epidemiology of the disease. Alternative landscapes of biocultural adaptation demostrate that the longer term benefits of condom use in AIDS prevention can be substantially diminished by the shorter term morbidity associatied with the unfavorabale socioeconomic circumstances of Ugandan women. Unless health interventions are broadened to improve these circumstances, positive feedback between cultural and biological factors will favor …

Student Work

Blues music originated in the Deep South where it matured into a recognizable style, known as the country blues. Socioeconomic changes. in the 1920's and 1940's encouraged large numbers of blacks living in the rural South to migrate northward. Chicago, Illinois was a destination for many blacks from the Mississippi Delta region, and the country blues was similarity transplanted to an urban environment. In this new setting, the familiar music of the country began to change and a new style of blues evolved, urban blues. One way to better under5tand the links between the country and urban styles we ·Id …
