Anatomy Of A Log House In Adams County, Pennsylvania And Its Unspoken Language, Elwood W. Christ Jan 1995

Anatomy Of A Log House In Adams County, Pennsylvania And Its Unspoken Language, Elwood W. Christ

Adams County History

Sixteen years after the end of the Revolution, and on the eve of the formation of Adams county, the United States became embroiled in a "quasi-war" with France (1797-1801) which strained the federal treasury. As a result of the diplomatic disagreement, Congress approved several bills to fund America's military build-up. One of these, the U.S. Evaluation Tax of July 9, 1798, was signed into law to raise two million dollars in revenues. The direct or "window tax" was levied based on landholdings, buildings and the number of glass lights, and slaves-in essence, a federal property tax.

Although the "window tax" …

Thomas Forsyth Torrance's Critique Of Evangelical (Protestant) Orthodoxy, John D. Morrison Jan 1995

Thomas Forsyth Torrance's Critique Of Evangelical (Protestant) Orthodoxy, John D. Morrison

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

Within Thomas Torrance’s larger criticism of the destructive reentrenchment of philosophical dualism in theology, he also gives briefer criticism to what he sees as the dualism of ‘modern Protestant (evangelical) orthodoxy’. Its ‘nominalistic’ separation of the Word of God as Scripture from God in his objective economic self-disclosure falsely disjoins the Word from God. While acknowledging the propriety of much of Torrance’s concern, this article endeavors to show a problematic disjunction in Torrance’s own though to this very point and to suggest a way of recovery that will enhance Torrance’s own profound and constructive Christocentri-Trinitarian theo-logical purpose.

Curing Our Tunnel Vision: The Representation Of The Ohlone In Bay Area Museums, Amy C. Raimundo Jan 1995

Curing Our Tunnel Vision: The Representation Of The Ohlone In Bay Area Museums, Amy C. Raimundo

Research Manuscript Series

Representations of culture, cultural empowerment and the politics that accompany these issues are currently at the center of debates regarding anthropological museum displays. Contemporary museology has come under fire recently because of the narrow, one-sided or slanted views that some groups feel museums have presented to the public in the past. Many museums are recognizing this misrepresentation and are trying to look into ways of creating partnerships with the people whose histories and cultures they present to the public (Herle 1994:2). The anticipated result is that a more balanced representation of a culture will emerge.

Viewing museum displays is a …

Mathematical And Theological Beliefs: A Cognitive Science Perspective, Ron Benbow Jan 1995

Mathematical And Theological Beliefs: A Cognitive Science Perspective, Ron Benbow

ACMS Journal 2004

In recent years, research studies have shown that control decisions and processes, beliefs about the nature of mathematics, attitudes, and other affective variables have enormous impact on the mathematical performance of students. This paper gives an overview of the research on mathematical beliefs and reviews some work done in Christian education relating to theological beliefs. It then compares the two.

Review Of Kalinga Ethnoarchaeology: Expanding Archaeological Method And Theory, Luann Wandsnider Jan 1995

Review Of Kalinga Ethnoarchaeology: Expanding Archaeological Method And Theory, Luann Wandsnider

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

In the 1960s, several practitioners (James Deetz, James Hill, William Longacre, and Robert Whallon) of what was eventually called the "New Archaeology" used ceramic stylistic elements to support claims about the postmarital residence of prehistoric populations. In particular, Hill and Longacre argued for two post-A.D. 1000 pueblos in Arizona that the observed lack of variation in ceramic stylistic elements was owed to the practice of matrilocal residence. Anthropologically informed common sense grounded their assumptions that females, schooled by their mothers, were responsible for ceramic production. These interpretations especially the under-supported assumptions---were criticized on many counts.

"We Can Do... Better":* Rights Of Singular Peoples And The United Nations Draft Declaration On The Rights Of Indigenous Peoples, Keith D. Nunes

St. Thomas Law Review

In the multiplication of European voyages of discovery and exploration between the years 1487 and 1780, the slow process of direct sea contact between regions and continents ultimately yielded a worldwide network of relationships for a new era, an era in which humankind continues to participate. North America was opened to European settlement as a result of an aborted series of English, French, and Dutch voyages intended to find a northern route to Asia. These voyages were attempts to erase the claim of monopoly to the navigation of trade routes in the Treaty of Tordesillas of 1494, as well as …
