Life History Biology And Soil Characteristics Of Two Species Of Arctomecon (Papaveraceae), Shelia Kathleen Sheldon Jan 1994

Life History Biology And Soil Characteristics Of Two Species Of Arctomecon (Papaveraceae), Shelia Kathleen Sheldon

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Two rare plant species of the Mojave Desert were investigated in this study. Life history and reproductive data as well as vegetative associates and soil characteristics for Arctomecon californica Torr. and Frem. and Arctomecon merriamii Cov. were collected. Results for the life history and reproductive data show that the highest mortality in both species occurs at the seedling stage. Loss of potential seed, for both species, was highest at the bud and capsule stage. Arctomecon californica was found to be reproductively self-incompatible, while A. merriamii was able to self-pollinate. Results from the vegetative and soil data show that the vegetation …

Demography And Habitat Use Of Desert-Dwelling Mountain Sheep In The East Chocolate Mountains, Imperial County, California, Nancy G. Andrew Jan 1994

Demography And Habitat Use Of Desert-Dwelling Mountain Sheep In The East Chocolate Mountains, Imperial County, California, Nancy G. Andrew

Open Access Master's Theses

I undertook a two year study in June 1992 to describe the demography and habitat use of desert-dwelling mountain sheep (Ovis canadensis nelsoni) inhabiting the East Chocolate Mountains, Imperial county, California. For demographic parameter description I collected data using ground observations, remote cameras, and helicopter surveys on 25 adult mountain sheep (17 females, 8 males) that had been captured and fitted with radio-collars in 1992. I used Bailey's (1952) method to estimate the population of males and females, in 1992 and 1993. Telemetry data indicated the presence of two female sub-populations. Based upon ground observations and on helicopter …

Life History Responses To Fire Season In A Clonal Herb, Pityopsis Graminifolia (Asteraceae)., John Stephen Brewer Jan 1994

Life History Responses To Fire Season In A Clonal Herb, Pityopsis Graminifolia (Asteraceae)., John Stephen Brewer

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The effects of three fire seasons (May, August, and January) on reproductive success and clonal growth of a golden aster (Pityopsis graminifolia) were examined within experimental burn plots in a longleaf pine savanna in north Florida. Several factors influenced reproductive success in this species, including rates of floral induction and bud herbivory, clone fecundity, and seedling dynamics. Flowering was induced by fire, especially when it occurred in May or August. Fire season affected rates of floral induction and bud herbivory by as much as one to two orders of magnitude. Sizes of bolting shoots were also affected by fire season. …

Taking Uncertainty Seriously: From Permissive Regulation To Preventative Design In Environmental Decision Making, R. Michael M'Gonigle, T. Lynne Jamieson, Murdoch K. Mcallister, Randall M. Peterman Jan 1994

Taking Uncertainty Seriously: From Permissive Regulation To Preventative Design In Environmental Decision Making, R. Michael M'Gonigle, T. Lynne Jamieson, Murdoch K. Mcallister, Randall M. Peterman

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This paper contrasts two paradigms of environmental regulatory decision making, "permissive regulation" and "preventative design," with respect to their treatment of scientific and legal uncertainty and the allocation of legal standards and burdens of proof. "Permissive regulation," which is the predominant approach in Canada, suffers two types of statistical errors. A type I error occurs when, for example, a pollution control device is unjustly imposed on an industry. A type II error occurs when no action is taken to control an industry when, in fact, damage is taking place. Concern to prevent type I errors often leads to type II …

Disenrollment Patterns Of Elderly In Managed Care And Fee For Service, Kenneth G. Manton, Dennis H. Tolley, Robert Newcomer, James C. Vertrees, Charlene Harrington

Journal of Actuarial Practice (1993–2006)

As the trend to provide health care through managed care facilities increases, the need to examine ,vhy insured individuals voluntarily terminate managed care coverage grows. Voluntary termination of coverage, or dis enrollment, has both social and fiscal implications. Particularly among the elderly, patterns of disenrollment likely are related to self assessment of care needs and levels of health. In this paper we examine the patterns of dis enrollment among elderly enrollees as a function of health status and disability. We focus on disenrollment patterns from an experimental prepaid extended care facility, called a social HMO (S/HMO) and compare this pattern …

Effects Of Brazilian Pepper (Schinus Terebinthifolius) On Gopher Tortoise (Gopherus Polyphemus) Habitat Utilization, Judith Ray Hicklin Jan 1994

Effects Of Brazilian Pepper (Schinus Terebinthifolius) On Gopher Tortoise (Gopherus Polyphemus) Habitat Utilization, Judith Ray Hicklin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Three plots were chosen on the Florida Atlantic University Nature Preserve (FAUNP) to study the effect of the exotic Brazilian pepper trees, on the burrow site selection and foraging range of the native gopher tortoise. The home range of tortoises was not statistically different among plots. Proximity of burrows to tree, size of tree and nearest neighbor distance exhibited no effect on burrow site selection or foraging range. Tortoise burrows in all plots exhibited a random dispersion. Current coverage by Brazilian pepper trees and the size of the trees present on the FAUNP has no significant effect on the burrow …
