Getting Rid Of The Vegetables, David F. Forte Oct 1992

Getting Rid Of The Vegetables, David F. Forte

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

There ought to be a more accurate term that describes not just the medical condition but the underlying humanity of the afflicted person. Perhaps something like "Persistent conscious condition" would be a more technically descriptive and less morally freighted substitute. It would, in fact, communicate a more complete picture of what is going on.

Cost Effective Maintenance Contracting, Bobby W. Meade, David Q. Hunsucker

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Increased emphasis on highway maintenance and the need to accomplish the maintenance programs as efficiently as possible, prompted this study. The objectives of the study addressed herein are the identification of maintenance activities performed by contract, determination of equivalent levels of service between contract performed and in-house performed activities, cost comparison of those activities, and recommendations to implement the findings.

Findings are that activities routinely performed by contract are cost efficient. A formal make-versus-buy decision making process should be developed. The process should be made available to District personnel and the make-versus-buy decision made at that level. Decision making processes …

A Phase Ambiguity Resolution Technique For Tcm, William P. Osborne, Joel L. Whittington Oct 1992

A Phase Ambiguity Resolution Technique For Tcm, William P. Osborne, Joel L. Whittington

Conference Proceedings

This paper presents the simulation model, performance evaluation and hardware implementation of a technique to resolve phase ambiguity in trellis coded modulation (TCM) where the popular Viterbi algorithm is utilized. While this approach has been employed with BPSK and QPSK, its application to multilevel modulation schemes (M>4) is novel and of interest because it provides a viable alternative to rotationally invariant codes. This approach does not require any arithmetic computations and can be accomplished with minimal hardware. The results presented in this paper are being used to implement a 32 sector phase quantized TCM system utilizing 8PSK modulation.

Application Of Expectation-Maximization Algorithm To The Detection Of Direct-Sequence Signal In Pulsed Noise Jamming, Arif Ansari, R. Viswanathan Oct 1992

Application Of Expectation-Maximization Algorithm To The Detection Of Direct-Sequence Signal In Pulsed Noise Jamming, Arif Ansari, R. Viswanathan

Conference Proceedings

We consider the detection of direct-sequence spread spectrum signal received in pulsed noise jamming enviromment. The Expectation- Maximization Algorithm is used to estimate the unknown jammer parameters and hence obtain a decision on the binary signal based on the estimated IikeIihood functions. The probability of eerror performance of the algorithm is simulated for a repeat code and a (7,4) block code. Simulation results show that at low signal to thermal noise ratio and high jammer power, the EM detector performs significantly better than the hard limiter and somewhat better than the soft limiter. Also, at low SNR, there is little …

Citizen Kane: American Heroes And Witnesses, Sidney Gottlieb

Communication, Media & The Arts Faculty Publications

Citizen Kane is in no danger of being dislodged from its place as one of the most respected films of all time, but it is in danger of losing its vitality as a film with meaning as well as impressive visual appeal. When we call Kane to mind, we no doubt remember stunning scenes and cinematic images: the close-up of Kane's lips filling the screen, whispering "Rosebud"; the breakfast-table montage sequence that in a few short minutes tells virtually all we need to know of the history of Kane's first marriage; the deep-focus shots of Susan and Kane dwarfed by …
