The Kipling Collection At Syracuse, Thomas Pinney Oct 1992

The Kipling Collection At Syracuse, Thomas Pinney

The Courier

The following is an edited transcript of the talk given by Professor Pinney to the Syracuse University Library Associates on 25 September 1992. Professor Pinney is the editor of The Letters of Rudyard Kipling.

Though Kipling is known to have visited New York State, it is unlikely that he ever saw the streets of Syracuse. However, he is notably present in the city now through the large, important, and growing collection of his letters and printed works assembled here in the George Arents Research Library for Special Collections. There are other important Kipling collections in the United States. Kipling's great …

Fostering Multi-Cultural Awareness: Books For Young Children, Doris Walker-Dalhouse Oct 1992

Fostering Multi-Cultural Awareness: Books For Young Children, Doris Walker-Dalhouse

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Parents are children's first teachers, and in this capacity the home provides the foundation for their later literacy development (Vacca, Vacca and Gove,1987). Parents also transmit values and shape attitudes about people who function as the core for children's socialization in the school and larger community. Therefore attempts at multicultural education should, ideally, entail the active participation of parents. Thomas Sobol, Commissioner of Education and President of the University of the State of New York, believes that young children at home or in preschool need help at home and school in order to understand diversity. They must be helped to …

Artificial Neural Networks For Robotics Coordinate Transformation, Stephen Aylor, Luis Rabelo, Sema E. Alptekin Oct 1992

Artificial Neural Networks For Robotics Coordinate Transformation, Stephen Aylor, Luis Rabelo, Sema E. Alptekin

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

Artificial neural networks with such characteristics as learning, graceful degradation, and speed inherent to parallel distributed architectures might provide a flexible and cost solution to the real time control of robotics systems. In this investigation artificial neural networks are presented for the coordinate transformation mapping of a two-axis robot modeled with Fischertechnik physical modeling components. The results indicate that artificial neural systems could be utilized for practical situations and that extended research in these neural structures could provide adaptive architectures for dynamic robotics control.

Waste-Surface Mapping Of The Fernald K-65 Silos Using A Structured Light Measurement System, B. L. Burks, Fred W. Depiero, M. A. Dinkins, J. C. Rowe, C. B. Selleck, D. L. Jacoboski Oct 1992

Waste-Surface Mapping Of The Fernald K-65 Silos Using A Structured Light Measurement System, B. L. Burks, Fred W. Depiero, M. A. Dinkins, J. C. Rowe, C. B. Selleck, D. L. Jacoboski

Electrical Engineering

During FY 1991, a remotely operated surface-mapping measurement system was developed by the Robotics & Process Systems Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory for use in the K-65 waste-storage silos at Fernald, Ohio. The mapping system used three infrared line-generating laser diodes as illumination sources and three high-resolution, low-lux, calibrated, black-and-white, chargecoupled- device video cameras as receivers. These components were combined to form structured light source range and direction sensors with six different possible emitter-receiver pairs. A technology demonstration and predeployment tests were performed at Fernald during July and August 1991, using the empty Silo 4 into which was placed …

Morphology, Deformation, And Defect Structures Of Ticr2 In Ti-Cr Alloys, Katherine C. Chen, Samuel M. Allen, James D. Livingston Oct 1992

Morphology, Deformation, And Defect Structures Of Ticr2 In Ti-Cr Alloys, Katherine C. Chen, Samuel M. Allen, James D. Livingston

Materials Engineering

The morphologies and defect structures of TiCr2 in several Ti-Cr alloys have been examined by optical metallography, x-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), in order to explore the room-temperature deformability of the Laves phase TiCr2. The morphology of the Laves phase was found to be dependent upon alloy composition and annealing temperature. Samples deformed by compression have also been studied using TEM. Comparisons of microstructures before and after deformation suggest an increase in twin, stacking faul4 and dislocation density within the Laves phase, indicating some but not extensive room-temperature deformability.

Accounting Historians Notebook

In honor of the 75th Anniversary of Bentley College, an exhibit of 40 books from The Harry C. Bentley Collection at the Boston Public Library (BPL) was held from May 15-June 15. The exhibit was coordinated by John Cathcart, archivist at Bentley College and Richard Vangermeersch, professor of accounting at the University of Rhode Island. They were joined by the coauthor of Harry C. Bentley's two volume bibliography, Miss Ruth S. Leonard for a reception at the BPL on May 29. This exhibit was the first one from the Harry C. Bentley Collection housed at the library. In the photograph, …

Ancient Accounting, A. R. (Alan Ralph) Millard

Accounting Historians Notebook

In an article entitled, "Does the Bible Exaggerate King Solomon's Golden Wealth?," Alan R. Millard [Biblical Archaeology Review, May/June 1989, pp 20-34] provides interesting references to the accounting for wealth accumulated by the rulers of Biblical times. In one case, Millard cites a gift from Tuthmosis III to the temple of Amun at Karnak. The walls of the temple catalogue the detailed inventory of items, large and small, and stands as an accounting record of the event.
