Relaxing Synchronization In Distributed Simulated Annealing, Chul-Eui Hong, Bruce M. Mcmillin Oct 1992

Relaxing Synchronization In Distributed Simulated Annealing, Chul-Eui Hong, Bruce M. Mcmillin

Computer Science Technical Reports

Simulated annealing is an attractive, but expensive, heuristic for approximating the solution to combinatorial optimization problems. Since simulated annealing is a general purpose method, it can be applied to the broad range of NP-complete problems such as the traveling salesman problem, graph theory, and cell placement with a careful control of the cooling schedule.

Attempts to parallelize simulated annealing, particularly on distributed memory multicomputers, are hampered by the algorithm’s requirement of a globally consistent system state. In a multicomputer, maintaining the global state S involves explicit message traffic and is a critical performance bottleneck. One way to mitigate this bottleneck …

A Process-Learning Pid Controller Algorithm Utilizing An On-Line Iterative Improvement Technique, Ryan Rosandich, Ralph W. Wilkerson Oct 1992

A Process-Learning Pid Controller Algorithm Utilizing An On-Line Iterative Improvement Technique, Ryan Rosandich, Ralph W. Wilkerson

Computer Science Technical Reports

Three iterative improvement algorithms are presented for the determination of process controller gains. An offline algorithm is developed and tested as a basis for comparison, and a simple on-line algorithm is developed as an incremental step toward the final algorithm, proportional on-line iterative improvement. The algorithms are based on an Artificial Neural Network learning method, and this method is compared with other control optimization techniques. The performance of each of the algorithms was experimentally evaluated in numerous realistically simulated process control situations consisting of flow, level, and temperature control loops with various values of dead-time and process noise. The experimental …

Review Of Maria Perry, The Word Of A Prince: A Life Of Elizabeth I From Contemporary Documents, Carole Levin Oct 1992

Review Of Maria Perry, The Word Of A Prince: A Life Of Elizabeth I From Contemporary Documents, Carole Levin

Department of History: Faculty Publications

Beautifully put together with magnificent illustrations. Perry's work has more the feel of a coffee-table book. What Perry, a professional actress, has done is to gather well chosen documents and string them together into a biographical narrative. Perry's great contribution is giving the reader Elizabeth in her own voice. Perry decided to do the book after performing "The Speeches of Queen Elizabeth I," and her enthusiasm for Elizabeth is obvious. ... Some of Perry's assumptions about Elizabeth are questionable and suggest pop psychology. I am not convinced that Elizabeth wept easily, nor would I characterize her as a "gentle creature" …

Two-Dimensional Analysis Of Skim Milk Proteins Using Preparative Isoelectric Focusing Followed By Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis, Hye-Hyun Y. Kim, Rafael Jiménez-Flores Oct 1992

Two-Dimensional Analysis Of Skim Milk Proteins Using Preparative Isoelectric Focusing Followed By Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis, Hye-Hyun Y. Kim, Rafael Jiménez-Flores

Dairy Science

A preparative isoelectric focusing (IEF) method was applied to separate skim milk proteins using the Rotofor device in a pH 3-10 gradient containing 4 M urea/1% triton X-100. Each of the 20 fractions obtained from the Rotofor device was then analyzed by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE). Both urea-PAGE and SDS-PAGE were used to separate purified caseins and skim milk resulting in comparable two-dimensional pattern. The major bovine caseins (αs1, αs2, β, κ-casein) were resolved better on urea-PAGE. The αs1- and β -casein were focused at pH ~ 4.5 and 4.8, respectively, whereas αs2 …

The Frat Volume 90 Number 01 September - October 1992, The National Fraternal Society Of The Deaf (Nfsd)

1991-2000

The Frat was the official member publication of the National Fraternal Society of the Deaf (NFSD). First established in 1902, the publication ran for just over a century, until its closure in 2006.---NFSD was an insurance business established in 1901. Its purposes were to provide insurance to mainly Deaf members, to serve as an advocate for the Deaf, and to provide community service and recreational opportunities through divisional activities. The existing insurance coverage was transferred to the Catholic Order of Foresters in 2005. The NFSD disbanded in 2007.---The Frat's main purpose was to keep members apprised of the activities of …
